I am in the midst of planning my honeymoon to Europe and of course I would like to have an idea of what I will be seeing in a location. One of the best place to find a lot of Europe travel photos are in SmugMug. SmugMug is a paid digital photo sharing website and a lot of photographers upload their photos there. There is a community called EuropeanTravelers which has tons of galleries or albums and the photos are all very beautiful as it is taken by either professional or amateur photographers.

SmugMug’s gallery is pretty cool and it’s fast. However I’d like to download all the photos to my computer and then show it to my wife when she’s back from work. Saving photos by photos from each gallery is a tedious task and I had to look for some methods that can automatically download all photos from an album or perhaps even a few albums at once! I found 4 free tools that can do that.
1. AlbumFetcher

AlbumFetcher is able to download multiple galleries with embedded captions and keywords. This tool is portable and you can run it without installation. All you need to do is enter a SmugMug ID, list the albums and then select which albums you’d like to download. Then set the location of where you want the files to be saved to and click the Fetch Albums button.

2. RapidFetcher

RapidFetcher runs on Adobe AIR, so basically it can run on Windows, Linux and Mac OS. First you will need to download and install Adobe AIR on your computer. Once you’ve done that, go to this page to install RapidFetcher. Click on the Install Now button and then click “Open” when you see a dialog.
3. FriendSync for SmugMug

FriendSync is a tool to download photos from a smugmug album, as long as they’re either public or password protected (if you know the password of course). FriendSync is only 36KB in size but unfortunately it didn’t work during testing. It is able to list all the images in an album but I am getting a lot of errors when it tries to download. Maybe SmugMug’s API has updated or changed but the author of this tool haven’t done the same to FriendSync. Nevertheless, it looks like a potential tool so I’ll leave the download link below.

4. SmugTug

SmugTug lets you batch download all photos from a SmugMug photo gallery. SmugTug bulk photo downloading works very much like AlbumFetcher or other bulk downloaders except that you don’t have to install any software. Also, as opposed to the other bulk downloaders, SmugTug can deal with unlisted and password protected galleries. Seems to be convenient but grabbing an album takes more than an hour! When there are 0 work in queues, you still have to wait over an hour. Then after adding an album to download, it adds another hour making it 2 hours of wait time before you can get the album. It works but way too slow…

So far AlbumFetcher works the best on my side although sometimes I experience a sudden disconnection when downloading an album that has over 400 photos. I didn’t have to worry much about resuming because it has the ability to skip downloading photos that already exist on the computer. Other than that, it also has a small thumbnail preview allowing you to have an idea what is AlbumFetcher currently downloading. It’d be better if AlbumFetcher supports multi-threading so it is able to download the whole album much faster. Happy auto downloading from SmugMug!

thank you so much ray…..
now this is my first time to get a geuine licence ever… ;)

Please, Ray, dedicate yourself a day to the memory of the Greatest Michael Jackson. I know it’s not the right place to talk about music, but I’m sure you were listening His divine music. You too give us emotions as He did. We must thank Him for that an God for living on Michael’s era.
REST IN PEACE, MICHAEL !
