I’ve seen many corporate and education facilities using AVG Anti-Virus free edition. Although it is said to be free, but it is only meant for Home users. It only gives basic protection and no technical support. The corporate company might get into trouble and being heavily fined if they use the AVG Anti-Virus free edition on the office computer. AVG website did state very clearly that:

  • AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition is for private, non-commercial, single computer use only. The use of AVG Free within any organization or for commercial purposes is strictly prohibited
  • Your use of AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition shall be in accordance with and is subject to the terms and conditions set forth in the AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition License Agreement that accompanies AVG Free

    • One of the REALLY free antivirus I found last year was AOL Active Virus Shield. It is powered by Kaspersky and I’ve recommended it to many many people. Unfortunately, it is no longer available and it has been replaced with McAfee VirusScan Plus.

    I’ve searched everywhere on McAfee VirusScan Plus – Special edition from AOL website and can’t find anything that state you can’t use it on corporate and commercial computers. So, it will still be free IF you sign up for a free AOL email address. It takes only a few minutes to sign up for an AOL email address, and then you’ll be given the link to download the McAfee VirusScan Plus – Special edition.

    McAfee VirusScan Plus – Special Edition is better than Active Virus Shield because it has spyware protection and firewall. As for Active Virus Shield, it only provides protection against virus. I’ve never used McAfee products before and not sure how good it is in detecting virus compared to Kaspersky. But hey, it’s totally FREE to use it anywhere!

      AOL is a US internet service provider but then it stated “but with an aol.com email address, you can receive this comprehensive set of safety tools free”

      So all you need to do is to create a free AOL email address, then you’re set to download the McAfee VirusScan Plus – Special edition from AOL.

      Just keep AVS, don’t use McAfee, it’s bloated and detects less.
      All you have to do is delete the first 2 lines in “C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AVP6\Data\aol-updcfg.xml”:

      and update works again!
      Fuck AOL, fuck McAfee.

      After updating, install the latest version (with more options like trusted zone and Vista compatible, you don’t have to uninstall, the upgrade works perfect) from

      http://download.nullsoft.com/avs/AVS_v25.exe

      or from Softpedia, if you don’t trust the link.

      If in the future maybe update again doesn’t work, just delete the aol lines again and make the file read only, or change NTFS permissions to read only.

      Thank you Raymond I don’t know how you get the time to keep up this blog but mere mortals like myself really appreciate it.

      It is a pity AOL stopped using KAV engine which rocks and switched to McAfee which is fat, slow, hard/impossible to configure (to my liking), did not detect my test virus after I zipped it but did keep quarantining almost everything in my cracks directory. To its credit it did say ‘malware’ not ‘ Virus ‘ or ‘Trojan’ etc but it seemed impossible to exclude these files from this awesome detection feature. (Before anyone asks their just cracks no pathology in them). OK its free and Joe.Aol will probably be happy but I doubt their are many Joe.Aol’s reading this Blog and many of us would like to go back to Kaspersky. Well we can for 180 days for free. You get Kaspersky internet security 7 with a full commercial license and tech support the whole works.

      Would like to confirm:

      1. My folder path for the xml file is at “C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AOL\AVP6\Data”. It should be the same right?

      After installing the new virus protection – Virus Scan Plus; I cannot sign on to AOL. Just gets hung up on password screen.

      Io uso McAfee by AOL da 2 mesi e va davvero bene.
      Nessun problema per creare un account per AOL.com dal mio paese.
      Ero abituato a NOD 32 e…..ora tutto va un poco più piano ma, la differenza è minima.
      Per passare i test di PcFlank mattere la spunta del Firevwall su \”Current Level STEALTH\”

      McAfee is good at detecting “in the wild” viruses. It has almost as many VB100 awards as Kaspersky (Kaspersky has 42 awards and McAfee has 35) and it’s spyware protection seems to be better than Kaspersky as well.
