Edit Right Click Menu with contexteditContext menu is the menu that that appears when you use your mouse to right click on an item in Windows Explorer. Context menu can be very useful for our daily computing task. For example, I can easily unzip files by right click on the zip file and use WinZip to extract the files. It’s much easier compared to the manual way that is running WinZip, browse for the zip file and then command it to extract.

Problems with context menu is it can get cluttered up very badly when you installed many programs since you don’t use all of them quite often. Not all softwares has the option for you to disable to menu from appearing when you right click a file. Sometimes even after uninstalling the program does NOT remove commands from the context menu. So we need to use third party tool to remove or temporarily disable them from appearing in context menu.

I only manage to find 2 quite outdated tool which lets you edit context menu. Although it’s quite old, but it works.

1. ContextEdit 1.2

This tool first published on year 2001 by Gregory A. Wolking in PC Magazine. Old but still works. I was able to find version 1.1 on many websites stating that it is free. However, on PC Magazine website, version 1.2 is the latest and you need to pay $7.97 for this file. I managed to download ContextEdit v1.2 and also a patch which is supposedly to crack limitations. I installed ContextEdit v1.2, and there is no limitations at all. I am not sure what the patch cracks because it’s in French.

2. ShellMenuView

Another tool which is similar to ContextEdit that you can take a look is ShellMenuView by Nir Sofer. ShellMenuView doesn’t require any installation process or additional DLLs. In order to start using it, just copy the executable file (shmnview.exe) to any folder you like, and run it. The main window of ShellMenuView displays the list of menu items. You can select one or more menu item, and enable/disable them. Can be a bit confusing because it displays everything in 1 screen. You can use the Find command to locate the entry that you want to edit.
