I am color blind and I suck badly in arts. I never liked designing, drawing or anything that has to do with colors. That’s because my brain is unable to identify a lot of colors. I see them but I just can’t tell what is the name of the color. Whenever I need to tweak any web design template’s Cascading Style Sheets(CSS), I’d have to waste a lot of time going through many trial and error just to get the colors right.

Less than a month ago(16 August 2007), a person name Chirag Mehta created and released a little application called Name That Color where you can create a color on the screen (or copy-paste CSS hex# color) and find out the name of the closest matching color.
How to identify color

Even if you’re given a name of the color, you can find out what’s the color looks like by selecting from the dropdown list of 1500+ colors! The color names in this list were found via Wikipedia, Crayola, and Color-Name Dictionaries like Resene. Duplicates were removed and manually edited by the author for consistency. The author of Name That Color allows anyone to incorporate the same facility into own website or project by using the simple javascript library that he created.

Let’s say you saw a very nice color on a website and you want to know what is the name of that color. You don’t even know anything about HTML or CSS. To find out the name of that color, use a free color picker software to get the HEX code of that color. Then enter the HEX format code into Name That Color and it’ll tell you the closest matching color.
