OK back to the topic. When I was 16 years old, I worked part time at a cyber cafe. That’s where I really had the chance to learn a lot about simple networking, software and Windows operating system. Once there was a boss’s friend, who doesn’t know anything about computer at all. I saw him sitting at a workstation and he was playing around with the mouse. I didn’t care much about it as I was doing my own thing.
When he left and I went to do my routine maintenance on the PC, I saw the desktop was filled with new folders and shortcuts. I bet he must have had a great time right clicking on icons to create more shortcut icons and also new folders! Luckily he didn’t do any real damage to the operating system. I just need to delete away the shortcuts icons and new folders. I thought to myself, if only I knew how to disable mouse right click…
There’s a registry hack to restrict or disable mouse right click. The only catch is it only works at desktop and explorer. Not totally flawless as people can still drag files and folders and drop them everywhere but it does provide some level of protection.
Go to Start > Run > type REGEDIT and hit enter. Navigate to:
Right click at an empty area on the right column and select New > DWORD Value. Use the name NoViewContextMenu. Double click the name and set the value data as 1.

Adding the registry tweak above will disable mouse right click for ALL users. If you only want to disable for the current logged in user, you should add the registry tweak to HKEY_CURRENT_USER instead of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
There’s a software called BasicMouse, used to call BabyMouse, which is allows parents and teachers (or anyone) to easily restrict several functions of the computer mouse and keyboard.

The right mouse button can be switched off completely, all buttons can be set to send left-clicks, mouse clicks can be restricted to a particular area of the screen and much more. It is intended to make it easier to use the computer, by for instance eliminating the problem of accidental right-clicks and the resulting context menus. A really useful program for students and kids who are still learning to use the mouse or who keeping accidentally clicking the right-mouse button.
BasicMouse requires the Microsoft .NET 2.0 framework. One thing I don’t like about BasicMouse is it is advertised as FREEWARE on a lot of sites but it is actually a shareware which cost $8.95. If you don’t buy the PRO version, you get to only use some of the restrictions for 5 minutes. Well, there is basicmouse.3.6.0.0.keygen-tsrh.zip. There is also a serial number released by a guy named Magnum which is blacklisted. Using the blacklisted serial number will ONLY pull up this message “”Illegal key fraud detected!! Modifying Master Boot Record.. Sending IP address via Port 4131… Deleting all system files…. Next time you’d better pay 9.95 if you like the software! Press OK or CTRL ALT DEL to format your local hard drives“.

this is really a valuable information for me. thanks for proving this valuable information. i was facing the problems caused by using the right click by any ameture usre of computer.
did it really do what it say? i mean formating your hdd and reporting it to developer??
I was going to skip this blog entry of yours but the decided to have a look and sure it was helpful. With two kids in your home this utility is great. The best part I really liked about BasicMouse was this warning,
”Illegal key fraud detected!! Modifying Master Boot Record.. Sending IP address via Port 4131… Deleting all system files…. Next time you’d better pay 9.95 if you like the software! Press OK or CTRL ALT DEL to format your local hard drives“
Simply great sense of humour.
Thanks a lot for this great post. I work at a computer/tech store and we have a number of computers availble for customers to access our website to check for products. However, due to recent events I ended up having to set up the computers so that they were a bit more secure.
I managed to set it up rather well, but this rightclick context menu editor just might be helpful if they do get out of the kiosk setup.
For the current version, it does not do that. It only tries to scare you. We never know in future if the developer might really implement this or not…
thanks
Keep the good tips coming…
Hi Raymond
“One thing I don’t like about BasicMouse is it is advertised as FREEWARE on a lot of sites but it is actually a shareware which cost $8.95. If you don’t buy the PRO version”
I decided to change BM from freeware to shareware a while ago but the thing is it took me 2 years to get listed on all software sites. Some update their product listings automatically via my PAD file but a lot of them just want you to log-in with your account and change it manually. That’s why it’s still listed as freeware on websites..
I changed the 5 minutes restrictions (stupid idea) to 14 days though.
And about the delete system files copy protection, you’ll have to check with Magnum ;)
Have a good one (sure like your Blog!!)
Michael
Thanks for your comment Mike. Changing from 5 minutes trial to 14 days is a good idea :)

how do i re-enable it? o-ow…im doomed! O__O
sorry , how to do it dor mobile registry
I have looked and looked and I have found that this way does NOT work for ME for some reason. It is my understanding though that its working for everyone else. I edited the registry to disable right clicking on the desktop by myself. Im a power user and I know what Im doing when it comes to group policys and the registry.
However for some reason. no matter what reg key I edit and no matter how I modify the Group Policy. NOTHING allows me to right click on my desktop.
For reference it is not a virus. I did this to my computer all on my own and now I don’t know how to fix it. (As a second precaution I have checked for viruses with a few good virus softwares just in case.
So WHAT is wrong with my computer? I have done all this and even a reboot in the end doesn’t fix it? Whats wrong?
i cannot find the
\” Navigate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Policies\\Explorer \”
the last folder cannot find it \” Explorer\”..
what can i do it?
just make it, works for me.
Thank you for your lesson.
Restrict or Disable Mouse Right Click at Desktop and Explorer
Hi Raymond,
I wrote a little application in C# dot net 3.5 that allows you to disable right/middle/left clicks, which ever you choose. I wrote it out of fustration playing flash games and accidentally right clicking, now I just disable right clicks play my games and reenabled them when done.
I’ve uploaded the installer to rapidshare
http://rapidshare.com/files/329149572/GobbleClicks.msi
check it out…simple and works …or email me if you choose..
