So now, whenever I am unable to load any website, I would first need to make sure whether it is the server side or my side problem. This is what I’ll do to make sure that it is not my Internet connection, computer configuration problem or a virus that has modified my HOSTS file.
Let’s say I turn on my computer and connect to the Internet. Then I launched Firefox and type raymond.cc at the URL. After waiting for a while, the site still doesn’t load and later Firefox gives me this message that says “Unable to connect. Firefox can’t establish a connection to the server at raymond.cc. The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments. If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer’s network connection. If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the web.”

Instead of immediately bugging my friends to help me check whether can they access the website that I was trying, I can do it yourself via DNS Tools & Stuff. All I need to do is enter the domain name or IP address of the website, make sure that Check Port 80 and Ping Host is checked. Click Get Info button and DNSTools will try to check the website status.

There are many other similar websites such as NetMonitor and Down for everyone or just me that provides free service to determine if a site is actually up if you can’t reach it yourself but DNS Tools is my favorite because it’s not too simple nor too advanced.

Raymond, you did it again! You just gave another helpful tip. This guide definitely helps to rule out that it isnt me having trouble loading a website.
Thanks Raymond!
Happened to me several times!
Now I’ll better check…..
thanks ray!
Just-Ping.com is better, because it pings sites from several servers around the world.
http://just-ping.com/
Yong, just-ping.com is nice, but it can’t be used to determine a website is up or down because sometimes the server can still be ping but the httpd service is down. That’s why the port 80 check is pretty important.
@Raymond: Agreed with you. Ping does not check on http port service. Is this can be use for FTP service?
It happens to me all the time, I can’t access sites but friends and those websites can, quite annoying.
One thing though that is the hosts problem is when you get blocked from the servers firewall, I got blocked from my own website once and it took weeks to get it resolved!

Saves me the paranoia when I can’t reach a site.
I’ve tried DNS tools, downforeveryoneorjustme… they all show that the site’s up but still unable to open the site…
my internet connection is good… where is the problem?
I tend to use http://www.ismywebsiteonline.com
This is a simple – and free! service, where you get an email immediately if your site is down, they check from a dozen or so locations across the globe. For a small fee they can also send you an sms, which is even better when you’re on the road.
They also have some neat graphs and reports and stuff on downtimes, so you can use that to complain to your hosting company if it happens to often
How do I find out what is my PR for my site
