Quickly Shutdown or Reboot Your Computer in ONLY 5 Seconds

Have you ever timed how long does it take for your computer to shutdown? My laptop took 28 seconds to shutdown while my desktop took 34 seconds. I considered both my laptop and desktop shutdown time fast because I do not have any running programs at system tray. If you have a lot of programs running in background, Windows will have to terminate them before it can shutdown.
Today I stumbled on a very small tool that is only 16KB in size which can shutdown your computer in only 5 seconds. At first I find it hard to believe, so I downloaded this shutdown tool and tested on my laptop which it really did shutdown my laptop in 5 seconds.
From the creator of XP Smoker, they have a freeware called SuperFast Shutdown which can make your computer shutdown instantly! After installation, simply run the given shortcut (SuperFast Reboot or SuperFast Shutdown) to either reboot or shutdown your computer.
The official website did not mention how SuperFast Shutdown work. If I am going to use this tool to shutdown my computer, I got to know how it work so I know what are the risks involved as I don’t want to turn on my computer and find that some of my files gone missing because of improper shutdown.
Here are my thoughts on SuperFast Shutdown. This program takes 5 seconds to shutdown a computer. So coincidentally that you can also force to turn off a computer by pressing and holding the power button for 5 seconds. I know that the power button can be disabled in Windows XP. If the power button can be disabled using software, I believe it can also be programmed to press and hold for 5 seconds which will turn off the computer. So, can it be that SuperFast Shutdown programmatically simulate pressing and holding the shutdown button for 5 seconds? Maybe…
Next I did a test to see whether shutting down using SuperFast Shutdown can cause corruption on documents or files if it is opened. I have a text file saved by the name accounts.txt at desktop. Then I open accounts.txt, added extra words in the text file and ran the SuperFast Reboot icon. My computer shuts off in 5 seconds and starts to boot up Windows. When I got in Windows, the accounts.txt file is NO LONGER available at desktop.
I strongly believe that SuperFast Shutdown tool shuts down computer by programatically pressing and holding the power button. In my opinion, it is not good but there are people in forum saying that they’ve been using it for a year and nothing happened to their computer. The official website says that although it has never been reported, regular usage could possibly cause disk corruption.

Nice tool. Thanks for sharing with us. When I want to shut down real fast, I go to
Task MAnager by pressing Ctrl = Alt = Del. Then I choose ‘Shut Down’ option. That usually shuts down my system fast, but it takes around 10 seconds.
Is this risky ? I mean, as risky as super fast shut down in 5 seconds ?

For what it’s worth Steve Gibson’s wizmo does the same by running “wizmo -reboot!” or “wizmo -shurtdown!” in the cmd line or shortcut.
It doesnt emulate keypress.

“Shutdown -S -F -T 00″
it will shutdown the pc in 00 seconds.
or to run the command
“Shutdown -R -F -T 00″
and it will restart the pc in 00 seconds

I used a program similiar to this and accidently shut down with out closing a program thinking it would save settings and things. NOPE LOL!! it slammed the PC shut. And all info was lost. IT was like encountering an error where XP will shut down in 30 secs and you have time to save. But inthis case its almost instantaneous
However Raymond i would like to know how to disable the pwer button in xp i have another pc i let my nephew play a few kids games on and he LOVES to turn the sucker off and on OVER end OVER and OVEr again.
Will this damage the PC???
I just let my computer at home and at work on all the time so I can always instantly use it without waiting for boot up.

Hi everybody! I tried this tool some years ago and it didn’t take much time to cause problems to my pc. Really, don’t touch this.
I think I will try the windows shutdown method. This program is risky and may cause data loss. All the hard work I have done may gone in 5 sec.

i am using it, and its great if you are in a hurry. But be sure to first save your documents first before clicking the shutdown or reboot features icon.
Unlike you, I haven\’t checked exactly how it works but like you, I suspect it does simulate pressing the power button for 4-5 seconds. As on some of my PCs I use a the freeware version of Yankee Clipper III (a clipboard enhancer) and if I shut down by actually pressing the Off button for 4 seconds I lose all the data in all of YKIII\’s data files. Exactly the same happens to the YKIII data files if I use this program and was the reason I rejected it when I first tried it a year or so ago.
By the way, with programs like YKIII that lose their data files when the off button is held down or this program is used, you still lose the data files even if you do a manual save command immediately before pressing the off switch or use this program.

Windows is shutting down so slowly because it has to shut down the whole bunch of the software utilitities you’ve installed. This days every driver and almost every piece of software put something additional to the list of your Windows services (example – MSOffice start accelerator, Winamp agent and Remote Control, SoundBlaster control panels and so on). If you want make you’re machine a bit faster – deinstall drivers and software which you do not use on everyday basis and walk through your Startup folder using ‘msconfig’ command.

Ya i have tried pressing power button for 5 sec.When i again started my computer i saw that nothing has been saved in my computer like renaming the folder or changing any settings.
This skip the part of window when it says “Saving Settings”.
It can also be done by this method
1. Open ‘Windows Task Manager’ (Ctrl+Alt+Del)
2. Click ‘Shutdown’ (at the top next to ‘Help’)
3. Then HOLD the ‘Ctrl’ key and Select ‘Turn Off’.
4. …5…4….3….2…1….You PC turns off immidiately.
I have decompile this software, it doesnt emulate keypress. just a simple API like i said before.
Data lost because it doesnt wait for any application to close properly. Why would you shutdown if you havent save your work? Whos false is that.
I have been using that for atleast 8 to 12 months, I think.
It is very good program. also see Steve gibson’s Wizmo for monoff etc to save power

YOu don’t have to download this program because you can edit your registry to make reboot and shutdown faster. No programs needed. only registry editor

Thanks for lewtting us know that it was from the XP-Smoker geezer. That prog also had an option to \\\”optimize\\\” shudown or something like that. This transformed shutdowns into reboots, or something like that.
Would not touch that thing with a pole of any length! Keep the fingers off!
