Unfortunately even the final “stable” version of Firefox 3 is still crashing intermittently. Waited for nearly 2 weeks, but still no updates. This crashing problem is really annoying because it is intermittent and there is no way to replicate the problem. Firefox 3 can crash when opening a site with flash, opening a new tab, closing tab, filling up forms and etc… I’ve got really fed up with the problem and I had to find a solution.
Sometimes I’d get a screen that says “firefox.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost. For more information about this error, click here.”

Clicking the more information link shows that there is a problem with mozcrt19.dll at offset 00006c6c. Sometimes it is caused by other DLL files.

And sometimes Firefox 3 crash is caused by ModName unknown at offset 0521001d.

There are times that Firefox 3 just crashes and closes itself. Immediately after that Mozilla Crash Report window will show asking me to report the problem to Firefox developers.

Firstly, I uninstalled Firefox and deleted Firefox folders in Program Files. I then install a clean version of Firefox 3 and use a new profile. After using it for a while, Firefox 3 crashed again. It clearly shows that there are problems with Firefox 3 because I’ve already done a clean installation and using a new profile.
I tried using the latest Opera but somehow I am not used to it. Some of the shortcut keys and mouse clicks are different. One example is I need to simultaneously press CTRL + SHIFT + LEFT CLICK to open a link in a new tab. As for Firefox, it only requires CTRL + LEFT CLICK to open a link in a new tab… Another problem is some of the websites doesn’t display correctly in Opera.
I could revert back to Firefox 2 but I am so used to the speed in loading websites with Firefox 3. I remembered that the most stable version I used for Firefox 3 was RC1. What I did was I downloaded Firefox 3 RC1 Portable, extracted to my hard drive, copied my local profile to the portable version and voila, I am using Firefox 3 but no crashes. This is my temporary solution until the developer of Firefox fix the crashing problem. The local Firefox profile is usually installed in C:\Documents and Settings\[user]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\default.???\ Just copy the contents of that folder (except the cache directories) to the FirefoxPortable\Data\profile directory.
I know that I will be exposed to security risk when using Firefox 3 RC1 but crashing few times a day is very annoying, unproductive and gets on my nerves. I have Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 and it should protect my computer from any malicious codes that is vulnerable to Firefox 3 RC1.
Update: I noticed that an Add-on {972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd}:3.0 is causing the crash. The weird thing is I don’t even have any add-on installed! I went to C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\extensions and found a folder {972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd} with a install.rdf file inside. I removed the folder and so far it’s not crashing for me “yet”.

Thanks Raymond
very nice tips raymond! thanks!
will try it … my firefox 3 crashes everytime …
I have found a permament solution to Firefox crashing.
Install Opera and enjoy surfing again.
which on is not crashing anymore ? the portable or the real one ?
Yep, I’m seeing random crashes with the latest FF3, usually it coincides with using an OpenDNS shortcut to fire up Google Reader…
The portable RC1 won’t crash.
My Firefox 3 always crashes when logging into Gmail.I think this should help me.Thx

Updated to RC3, still the same crashing problem.

Thats because RC3 is RC2. No changes – only Mac.
My solution: Disable TabMixPlus. Works for me.
Greetings from Germany
Carsten
IanG: and install even more bugged browser? Opera 9.50 was/is terrible release, should be in beta stage, but no they had to release it before FF3…
Although I don’t have problems with Opera 9.5, but there are people also experiencing frequent crashes with Opera 9.5. And caschy, I do not have TabMixPlus.
Thats weird! Since I using de RC releases I never had a crash…
Might wanna give the nightly builds a try. Hit or miss as far as stability goes depending on what\\\’s been checked in but I\\\’ve been having a good streak haven\\\’t had a crash in weeks.
Get them here:
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/
yea me too my firefox 3.0 hasn’t crashed at all, still lovin it
No crashes for me not yet. 3.0 works good.
wow bro your really great, i admire you so much where did you learn all this shit!!!! your an unbelievable hell! your great, thanks for all the tips you post and send every day bro keep it up the good work!!!! see yah!!! SAYONARA!
For your information: {972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd}:3.0 comes with every Firefox version because it corresponds to the default theme installed which comes with Firefox. Hence you saw it here and now since you deleted it, check the themes tab in your firefox, default theme won’t be shown as installed there.
that is weird and i have had people complain about it, but i have yet to have that happen to me, every once in a while, i might get a memory usage problem, but then i just exit the process and choose restore previous session and i’m fine.
Hi Ray,
Been using ff3 the day it was released and have not experienced any crash till now. And yes I am loving the speed it provides. though I miss some of the add ons that were available in ff2.
Thanks Raymond.
To open a link in a new tab using Opera, just press SHIFT+ LEFT CLICK.
I agree that some of the websites doesn
I found that google customizer was causing all kinds of issues for me and FF3… uninstalled it and the crashes cut dramatically, but it still crashes too much for my liking.
no crashes in here either!! try these two diskeeper and TweakNow RegCleaner.
no crashes so far, probably you people might want to share your com specs, that includes WinXP SP. I’m using XP Home SP3.
No crashes so far.
If your Firefox keep crashing, are you using Kaspersky? If so, then Kaspersky might be the culprit. http://forum.kaspersky.com/index.php?showtopic=74111
Thanks for the heads up bahamot. Didn’t expect that Kaspersky might be the culprit of firefox 3 crashing problem. I will try to investigate from there.
Yes,
I have been also facing the same problem. I have removed the file. Let me watch. You are really wonderful and very sharp.
Thank’s alot for this Raymond. Mozilla Firefox (FF) is my favourite browser. I really like it as a Godsent instead of (arghh..) IE7. However i still choose to wait for the FF 3 final version. Hopefully not longer, I m using FF 2 now. Anyway, thanks again! Regards-Ur Fan, Amirz
It looks like your tip solved my annoying problem. Thanks for posting it!
Firefox 3 RC1 Portable crashed twice today. I believe that it has nothing to do with Firefox but the software that is installed on my computer.
@kaido: You never see forums filled with ppl wondering why Opera keeps crashing…? Work it out for yourself
I’m running Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0.1.325. No crashes.
I think 7.0.1.327 has problems.
i recently (6/12) did a clean install of Win XP Tablet PC 05 from a restoration disk. im running McAfee and and installed SP3.
i have been running my pc very clean and careful to avoid the malware, virus\’, ect. that locked it down and forced me to reformat. i currently have minimal software installed and have been running adaware and spybot.
that said, ever since i updated to the FF3 it has crashed like crazy.
So with a fresh XP install, few programs, and little possibility of registry problems, FF3 is still crashing frequently..
i did not find any problems using firefox 3.
i’m using firefox 3 and it’s only crashed once when i was filling out a form but it had the mozilla crash report so i didn’t care i just resumed what i was doing
I’m running Kaspersky Internet Security 8.0.0.357, but no crashes.mzvkbd.dll file ,do not appear in autorun entry. I’m using windows xp,SP3.
Instead of using CTRL
Instead of using CTRL + Left Click, I just middle-click. My mouse doesn’t have 3 buttons, but depressing the scroll wheel does the trick: opens link in new tab.
I still run 1.5.12. – with all my favourite extensions. ncluding the all so fabulous tabextensions fron hiroshi (or so). I could get myself the spell-checker extension, if I needed it. It does the job for me. I also still run Office 97. Pops up as fast as Notepad. Why always follow the upgrade hype???
Security? Yes, the terrorists want my computer!
if your using firefox… hope you’ve been able to scroll this far and read this…
i tried remove the extensions {972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd}. so far it works, but yet there are sometime it does crash, especially when using firegestures extensions. dunno if firegestures still a buggy.
btw, i’m also using kaspersky internet security v8.0.0.357 & havent decide to remove that yet.will try to remove that aswell, if things still crash on firefox.
i’ve removed the mzvkbd.dll from auto-run at regedit using the tools autoruns http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx.
so far i got no crash yet.even when using firegestures.
hope it works now!
Good suggestion. i am going to try this out.
thanx
thanks a lot – i have removed all the addons (deleted all folders under extension) – was really tired of these crashes.
Hi, I done what was said above but its still crashing for me.
Is there anything else I need to remove? Please someone help ASAP. Thanks

I think it’s sorted now. Hopefully!
This problem has really been annoying me, I’d like to thank you for providing temporary solutions to stopping FF3 crashing! It’s much appreciated.
Regards,
Carl
Cheers,
uninstalled all old add-ons which weren’t running in 3.0 anyway, but still need to see whether this helps.
I am also encountering frequent crashes which are HIGHLY annoying. I just hope there will be a solution. Your article and the responses below don’t give me too much hope that the uninstalling of the old Add-Ons will help, so I guess I need to wait.
Don’t want to install Opera or anything else as well. And so far, I have to reluctantly use the Internet Exploder.
Cheers again,
as I read in a Ubuntu Forum, the problem is across all platforms and is related to the Flash Player. As the guys over there said, Adobe is aware of the problem and is working on a solution.
But as you all know: Flash is not Open Source, so a solution may take a while and by chance we’ll hear about it…
Good luck!
Is it safe to disable mzvkbd.dll as stated above? Sorry for such a question.
Regards,
Carl
firefox keeps on opening when i press the left-ctrl key.
even when im on other apps. each time i press on that key it opens a new firefox window. can someone help me out?
CORRECTION!
Firefox is working for me now.
I tried safe mode, reinstalling, disabling addons and reset everything to defaults. Firefox still kept crashing.
Do this: When uninstalling firefox, somewhere I had an option to delete old data. There is a check box you have to click. (somebody clarify this) It says that you will lose all old data like bookmarks etc… Go ahead and delete old data. I found some exe file was deleted. Then, install firefox 3.0.1. No crashes! Gmail, tabs everything is safe. I am posting this on many sites.
Woohoo!

Je test sur Firefox 3.3, je vous tiens au courant !
thanks a lot. it has been annoying and painfull…. thanks for the help.
Беда. Помогите при просмотре фильмов в онлайн, делаю полный экран и он меня выкидывает. Появляется синий экран с кучей синих цыфорок и все!!! что делать!!!???
FF3 keeps randomly crashing for no reason, no matter what. The best solution: Revert back to FF2.
Well done! This is the fix for my crashes. SOMEONE TELL MOZILLA!
Wow Radmond!
This is the solution for my problem, after months of problem.
Thanks man!
Thank you Raymond! My Firefox 3 has been now more stable and hasn’t crash ever since I deleted the “{972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd}” folder! You made my day better, so thanks!
what should i do with this problem?

Please Opera fans,
We’re all happy for you that you love your favorite browser so much. But don’t try to convert us.
If Firefox 3 keeps annoying us we’ll convert ourselves and make our own choices.
BTW I’ve never met a real IE fan. Even those sick and tired of FF3 crashes hardly ever switch to it.
Thanks Raymond, I hope your tips help me as much as some other commenters. I really wonder what came into the Mozilla team to announce dropping support for v2.x.
I used to use FF portable when FF3 wouldn’t run. Now I just keep the FF3 installer handy. If FF3 crashes more than 1 time, I run a new install right over the old, just like updating to a newer version. Works every time, up and running in just a few seconds.
FF portable takes at least 30 seconds to start on my comp, Opera portable starts like a bolt of lightning.
thanks soo much!!!!!!!! weeee…not i never crashed using the portble firefox..
I occur frequent crashes on ‘Firefox 3′ ever since I installed a theme for the browser. I will disable this add-on to check if this is the cause of this ‘Crash Crisis’.
My Firefox was upgrade to the latest version 2 days ago, and I have been having nothing but problems. Today, I switched to Opera. You guys need to check Opera. It’s awesome! If you like addons/extensions for Firefox, you will love the widgets for Opera. I got everything I need and some. Opera now runs faster and use less memory than Firefox. I switched from IE to FF about 2 years ago when Opera sucked, now Opera is definitely better than FF in my opinion. I probably wouldn’t go back to FF if they do fix the problems with all the crashing, freezing, hanging, and dead popup links. Check out Opera, you won’t regret it.
thanks for the info….but for me it didnt work…still crashing like crazy…im no puter person and your help was easy to follow….but….what now….lol tried opera and didnt like it….ie….no thanks….wish i could go back to firefox 2….but thanks
Ii fixed my firefox 3… Thanks a lot
Thanks!!! now firefox 3 is no chance of crashing again thanks for this tip
this keeps happening to my dads computer, even does it to I.E explorer. So I am begging to think it’s not just a web browser problem, something more eternal. has anybody tried re-installing windows and if you did, did it solve this issue?
I also found the same folder in the extension, like you said. I have removed it and ….hope it works.
Deleted that odd folder… hope it works!
I deleted that folder in the extensions and have had no trouble since! Thanks for the good advice!!
I deleted the folder as you described, but Firefox still crashes randomly (especially quickly when starting a page which contains video elements).
I’m very disgusted with this firefox 3 Rc same with me i will un install this ang back to firefox 2 at least no bug or crashed.
I did delete the folder since i was so sucked up with the constant crashes especially websites with videos.
I hope it works this time and the crashes disappears!!
Thanks soooo much, Raymond. I found and deleted that folder a few hours ago. No new crashes, and they were happening several times an hour before.
For Mac users, here’s the traceback:
I found 972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd inside EXTENSIONS.RDF in VOPSQYPL.DEFAULT in PROFILES in APPLICATION SUPPORT in LIBRARY
Best wishes for crash-free cruising!
P.S. So, for Mac users, just delete the whole file EXTENSIONS.RDF
Never mind. I got on Twitter and Firefox3 crashed X 5. Back to the drawing board.
Yep removing that file 972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd has fixed my ff crashing probs good job mate
when i successfully downloaded norton 360 trial version my firefox 3. is suddenly crushed and tried many times to remove and install still a message appear crushed report. can anyone fix this annoying bug
I found I had both an old and new version of Shockwave Flash installed. I removed the old one and I can now successfully navigate the Sky News website. See http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+plugins
helpful, but i think i’ll go with the slower firefox 2. i’ve been having problems with firefox 3 ever since it was released. and it’s just not once or twice. or even a few times a day. it’s a few times every cupple minutes, stop for another cupple hours, then starts crashing again. crash with the average of 10 times or so a day. well it’s mac so it can’t be helped i guess. but windows? gah never responds. why? oh just cause i runed a window for games, it shouldn’t cause any problems though as it never did before. but now? not satisfied with the crashing or force quiting at all.
Hello,
I tried to clear cookies, cache, uninstall mozilla, reinstall, i don’t have any viruses according to spyware doctor and other than that i have a mouse problem too, my right button is not working so i have to copy and paste with keyboard. And I read somewhere that I should start my mozilla in safe mode in order to solve that mouse problem, so I did that and my mouse worked, and my poker worked too! I was so happy!!! And next day i turned it on again, and everything was same, i had that mouse problem, and poker problem, and on some other pages, that are not games, just normal google pages. So i tried that safe mode again, but it doesn’t work
I use windows xp and i have IE and Mozilla. Few days ago i started to have this problem with both of them. When i open some pages over internet, my internet window just shuts down… first it says it occured some problem and it needs to be closed and i have 3 options: debug, send report, don’t send report, and no matter which option i chose it just closes. I open my internet again and it asks me do i want to reopen those same pages and when i click yes it just happens again, and when i start a new session it is ok. So for example i can open facebook, but i cannot enter poker application cause it shuts down everything, and i can open some page on internet, but some other i can’t.. I don’t understand why..
Now, i did what you wrote too. I deleted {972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd and i went to poker again and it crashed again !!! What do i do??
It crashes for me at least 10 times a day and always when I am searching in Google. It is random.
how bout mine?
i got the latest one from the site.. so i was confident that it was pretty good installer
when i uninstalled my previous one, and installed the latest one, i cant use it. It keeps popping the “crashed message” so i was pretty pissed. anyone got the same problem as mine? what should i do? thanks in advance
i fixed mine now, hope it lasts.
i deleted the {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0007-ABCDEFFEDCBA at the extension folder
and hope it fixes others too
I’ve had this exact problem! I hope this tip works. I’ll try it and report back thank you very much 4 the advice and the tip though.
The Crash reporter doesn’t start after the crash :\
oh, it crashed right after i posted ..

I think i know what the solution is.
I reinstalled my windows over and over again but still my firefox, chorme, IE, or opera crashes.so i took my friends advice to removed my video card from the motherboard and used the built-in instead. and then i reinstalled my windows again. and now it does not crash anymore. so now i need to replace a new video card.
my friend told me that we have the same prob;em but he has to replace some RAM. hope this helps.
The “temporary fix” provided by the author worked fine – no crashes any more ! — Thanks..
Ok…here we go, i went into the folder and saw the file described in this topic earlier. I moved the whole folder from that harddrive to another for testing and so far, it seems to be a viable solution. While testing, i proceeded to bombard Firefox with as many tabs and websites as i could and still no crash. Yes i know it’s the firefox basic theme file, but it could be that there is an issue within that very file that’s causing the crashes. I will however continue to test Firefox to see how well it holds up. I will post a comment tomorrow if there are no further issues.
Well, ain’t this a bitch, something is going on here and i really don’t think this shit is funny. I’d ratherv deal with IE8…least i know it don’t crash and it has had some improvements as far as the speed. So, to the Firefox tech team i say…dismantle and re-create…maybe then, you can figure out where you’ve fucked up at. Fuck Firefox…it’s back to IE for me.
Has anybody given it much thought that Microsuck may have released a update to deliberately cause all other browsers to crash? When i did a re-install of Windows, i had no problems with Firefox crashing until after Windows updates. Could the answer be the updates? Opera, Google Chrome, and Firefox has the crashing problem. And i have noticed that IE8 is even faster than the older versions. As much as i would hate to, IE8 may become my choice of browsers being as it doesn’t have these issues.
Ah, thanks! This settled up some contradictions I’ve heard.
I researched it some and found this website http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox+crashes+when+loading+certain+pages?style_mode=inproduct#Problematic_or_out_of_date_extensions_or_themes
I disabled AVG and it’s working fine now.
