However, updating the virus definition for both Kaspersky and Avira Rescue CD is not easy. Kaspersky Rescue CD virus definition has an extension of .kvp but the Windows version uses .avp. I still haven’t figure out a way to manually update Kaspersky Recue CD’s virus definition but I am sure it’ll involve editing the ISO image. As for Avira Rescue CD, there is an option to update the VDF file, but it requires the VDF file to be copied to a floppy drive or somewhere in the disk.
The best is to use BitDefender Rescue CD because it has the ability to automatically update its virus definition if it finds an internet connection whenever you boot up the computer with the Rescue CD. As far as I know, BitDefender is highly sensitive in detecting both known and unknown virus.
BitDefender Rescue CD is similar to Kaspersky and Avira’s one. You’ll have to download the ISO image (bitdefender_2008_RescueCD_v2.iso) and burn it to a CD or DVD. Then boot up the computer with the disc and you’ll get a screen that looks like the image below.

Hit the “ENTER” key on your keyboard and it’ll start loading Linux from the CD. At the final stage of loading linux files, BitDefender will automatically try to update the scanner and virus definition. This is automated and you don’t need to configure or run anything. If you have a fast internet connection (broadband), you’d need to wait for about 10 minutes for the update to complete. If it stalls for a long time and your modem/router adsl LED is not blinking, then I suggest you to try boot up the CD again.

Once the scanner and definition is updated, it’ll automatically launch BitDefender Antimalware Scan interface. All you need to do is to click the Start button and it’ll start scanning your local hard drive for virus.

The free BitDefender Rescue CD also contains other useful third party utilities such as ChkRootkit for scanning for rootkis, Nessus Network Scanner as remote network security scanner, Mozilla Firefox, Partition Image, GtkRecover and etc… Now we have Kaspersky Rescue CD, Avira Antivir Rescue System CD and BitDefender Rescue CD. Now I’ll try to figure out whether it is possible to combine all 3 CD or ISO into 1 disc.
Tip: If for some reason the Linux is unable to mount and read your hard drive which is preventing BitDefender scanner to scan your files, you can run “Terminal Emulator” from the desktop and type the command ntfsfix.

Thanks raymond..its really great..its just downlaoding…i’ll try it on my system!!!
Thanks a lot Ray! I have a question, when BitDefender downloads the new virus definitions, where are they downloaded to? If you use a CD-R containing BitDefender then how can the virus definitions be updated? I mean once something is burned onto the disk, you can’t modify or replace it, right Ray?
Thanks ray
I believe the definition is copied to the memory.
What I like is that Bitdefender have included their Antivirus, internet security and totoal security to the cd.
Raymond: you can combine the two linux cd’s with isolinux, but I don’t see how you can do it with the windows version, both in regards to copyright and technical limitations.
Good luck, though

Thanks Raymond
btw, what happens if we don’t have an active net connection ? Will it take too long to skip this automatic update step ?
It will be great if someone make one iso image with multiboot containing the 3 rescue CD (or more) Kaspersky Rescue CD and Avira Antivir Rescue System CD and BitDefender Rescue CD
Thanks, useful information
But If this able to automatically detect Network adapter driver, I need to configure IP address, gateway and DNS server
this is great! im looking forward for the combined version of all of them
…by the way, is this going to be effective from a year from now?
thanks raymond ,
i ahve a Question :

Live CD runs from RAM disk, updates in RAM disk as well.
also ntfsfix needs options specified. Best Live CD, or should I say the easiest to setup is UBCD4Win with Anti-Vir Avira Free & SAS. There\’s options for daily updates for most of the applications included. Once when you setup working environment updates are breeze. It is based on BartPE. Recent AV-Comparatives and other tests show that Avira slowly is getting on the top. Latest v8 is a great improvement and very good AV solution. Highly recommended over AVG,Avast,Rising…. all other free AV apps do not come even close to Avira\’s detection rates. The only thing missing is just email scanner. Also, for Windows based PC\’s it is better to use BartPE or WinPE Live CD\’s. Any Linux LiveCD uses ntfs-3g which is mature but not as native as the above mentioned. Anyways, good to have options.

thanks Ray
i have a Question ,
is it important that my system was protected with BitDefender before it get infected with this virus which stop my system from booting ,?

thanks again Ray

Hi Ray, I was just wondering if this is capable of running off a USB stick. Would it even boot up?
Thanks a lot, can be handy one day …. better to have it just in case something went wrong
Thank again for this nice post
thanks raymond. nice tool!
hay ray this version of bitdefender is very old,as i found it in the bitdefender blog of sep 2007
(http://forum.bitdefender.com/index.php?showtopic=2123)
,then how much time will it take to update, and will it be able to scan computer with perfection of new bitdefender?
@Dushyant: It is not really that new nor old but it updates the definition. So it’s good to scan and remove virus that you can’t remove in Windows.
As for how much time to update, it depends on your connection and the BitDefender server. I can’t give you an answer for that.
And you should know that there is no way to scan a computer with PERFECTION. If there is one, other security and antivirus company will have to close down…
Kaspersky Rescue CD uses bases for Linux version of Kaspersky. Virus databases are here: ftp://ftp.kaspersky.com/bases/av/klava/kdb/i386/ ; Just by overwriting the bases directory on the ISO you can have the kaspersky CD updated (it will still report that the bases are out of date, though – it doesn’t use them, but also checks for firewall et al. bases, which can be found here: ftp://ftp.kaspersky.com/bases/av/klava/
Hallo Raymond I having the Broadband Internet connection where I need to give my username and password of my internet Connection….Plz Answer me
With ‘perfection’ i meant to say the new technologies and strategies of new bit defender to find a virus as compared to older one.
Hi raymond. I have downloaded all 3 iso\\\’s, and was wondering if there is a way to put them all on a multiboot cd/dvd so it will be harder to misplace. also, i would like to add the vista recovery disc (http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vista-recovery-disc-download/). Thanks
Hello Raymond Hello All,
never heard of f.secure rescue disk 3.0?
http://www.f-secure.com/linux-weblog/2008/06/19/f-secure-rescue-cd-300-released/
regards
The link does not work
thank i found this
Magnificent. I have two questions though:
1. If you download the ISO file, can you boot through the file without burning the image into disc?(i\’ve heard it\’s about mounting the cd, is possible?)
2. I\’m a little bit confused of \”the disc mounting linux\” because i use windows as my OS. Is there an issue in that?
Thank you,
-Phillip
Philip:
1. While you can mount an ISO within Windows(or other OS), the whole point of this boot CD is for it to be run before/instead of Windows. So you need it to burn it to CD and boot your PC from it.
2. There\’s no issue with your system running Windows. The rescue CD boots and runs Linux from the CD, so it doesn\’t alter your Windows install, except when it removes a virus from it.
thanks for this ray…..
but gotta problem,i get this problem
\\\”udev hot-plug hardare detection event[2567]
run_program:\\\’/sbin/modprobe\\\’abnormal exit\\\”
so please help me out
then bitdefender update too fails……..
thanks in advance
Hi Raymond,
I have Winxp in my computer . Does the the rescue disc work with me, because I tried it but it doesnt boot and ask for files!!
please help me
Thanks in advance
It does not recognize any partition of my HDD. Any clues?
I have the same problem with Mix (post 31), but with the BitDefender antivirus. While the antivirus boots up normally, it can’t seem to be able to find my HDD. I have tested it on an other computer and it works perfectly, so i don’t think it’s a disk fault. Any Ideas?
