Check out the latest version of minimem. It now offers an intelligent engine that avoids taking lots of CPU cycles while optimizing like Cleanmem would do whenever it's loaded. It stays in the tray and uses very little CPU and memory. And unlike Firefox Ultimate Optimizer, it gives you control over the memory reduction frequency as well as options to not optimize Firefox or other processes when you're using the app or when it's simply not required due to your system not have used up all of its physical memory. A really fantastic app imho, way better than most if not all not-so-free solutions!

The memory monster on my system is usually Firefox. Since I usually have 25+ tabs open at once, the browser often takes up an excess of 200MB of memory.

Anyway, the way I got around this problem was that I began to use Firefox Ultimate Optimizer. (I think Raymond mentioned it in an earlier blog, but I couldn't find a link to it using several search methods.) Using the software, I was able to reduce the size of Firefox to well under 5MB... In fact, Firefox usually measures around 2MB in the Task Manager.

Unfortunately, Firefox Ultimate Optimizer must be loaded in the background for this reduction in memory usage to occur. But if you do the math (see below), Firefox Ultimate Optimizer has earned the 1.25MB of memory that it requires.

     200 MB (Firefox w/o FUO)
     - 5 MB (a "big" Firefox w/ FUO)
     - 2 MB (FUO)
     -----------------------------------
= 193 MB of memory saved
