I immediately told my friend that it is impossible and might be a fake news because Microsoft wouldn’t go that far to make our screen go blackout as that is even worst than privacy invasion! Later I did a bit of googling and found that many people has started talking about it. Some people even mentioned that they’ve already encountered this problem and they had to do a hard reboot to recover from the “blackout”. The newspaper did mention that “To continue working, users will need to reset the machine’s desktop background. All will return to normal, but only for 60 minutes before another blackout occurs.”
At first I felt that this news is fake because I could only find Malaysian bloggers talking about it and of course they got this information from the local newspapers. So I decided to test and check it out myself to see if this “blackout and icon vanishing” penalty for pirated version of Windows XP Professional is true or not.
I plugged in my hard drive that I use for testing purposes, installed a clean Windows XP Professional with a genuine product key and also installed service pack 3 + all latest updates. Then I used Magic Jelly Bean Keyfinder to change Windows Key to a pirate one (from eth0). Rebooted the computer and the logon interrupt message “You may be a victim of software counterfeiting. Click Resolve Now to get help with this problem.” window appears. I clicked Resolve Later and logged into Windows as normal. I waited for more than 60 minutes because I expect a screen blackout with all my icons go missing but nothing happened.
At first I thought that maybe I don’t have the latest WGA installed. I went to C:\Windows\System32 and found that LegitCheckControl.dll, WgaLogon.dll and WgaTray.exe files installed in my computer is version 1.8.31.0. From Microsoft Download site, the latest version of Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications is version 1.8.0031.0 which is actually the same as 1.8.31.0. To be sure, I download WindowsXP-KB905474-ENU-x86-Standalone.exe and installed on my computer. So I have the latest WGA and using a non-genuine XP Pro key that failed the genuine validation, why isn’t my screen blackout and icon vanishing?
I searched further and found an official Windows Genuine Advantage blog website. It did explain about the latest update to WGA notifications for Windows XP Professional and I now understood what does the local newspapers meant by “blackout”.
After installing this new version of WGA Notifications on a copy of Windows XP that fails the validation, most users will discover on their next logon that their desktop has changed to a plain black background from whatever was there previously.

You can of course go to Display Properties to set a new wallpaper or background color but every 60 minutes it will change back to the plain black background. This will continue to happen until that copy of Windows is genuine. Other than this, the user will see the addition of what Microsoft call the “persistent desktop notification” at the bottom right hand of the screen. It says “You may be a victim of software counterfeiting. This copy of Windows did not pass genuine Windows validation.”

The notification is, however, translucent and also can be clicked through and objects underneath it can be interacted with. The notification appears above any object on the desktop, but underneath open windows or applications.
That’s about it. No scary total blackout that you have to do a hard reboot or vanishing icons… This only I think Steven Patrick, the person who wrote about the article in TheStar newspaper did a very bad job in explaining the WGA updates.
Microsoft is no longer selling Windows XP, that means the user that is using the pirated version of Windows XP Professional will have no choice but to upgrade to Windows Vista. I believe this is another move from Microsoft to push users to upgrade from XP to Vista. For those that don’t want to upgrade to Vista and wants to continue using XP, you can wait for the famous Windows Genuine Advantage Validation v1.8.31.0 Cracked eth0. If you hate the blackout and the watermark, you can uninstall WGA by using RemoveWGA 1.2. The author of RemoveWGA can no longer host the file but then RemoveWGA can still be downloaded from Softpedia. Or easier, don’t install KB905474 from Windows Update.
Update: Alex Kochis, the director of Genuine Microsoft Windows emailed me to clarify that Microsoft will continue to offer Windows XP legalization products to customers who need them including after Windows XP is not longer available for pre-install on OEM systems or at retail.

Thanks for the info.I have a pirated copy. What if you choose not to download the wga?And from what i know this does not apply to corporate editions which i think i have, and i have my Paragon images. To bad it requires reboot,i can”t make a quick test in shadow defender, but i’ll try with a paragon image of my xp.
Anyway not even today M$ don’t realize that this is not the best approach.
thank god the only computer that has pirated windows xp pro doesn’t have internet connection
Q: Why are Microsoft annoying ppl who have pirated versions of an operating system which they are not even selling anymore?
They should be hassling ppl like me,who have a pirated version of thier latest operating system. And have been using it for some time now without any failure or nagging.
Way to go Microsoft, nothing like alienating a market that put them at the top of the pile.
…OR, don’t use a pirated copy… ??
@IanG – Microsoft is just trying to hit the majority of pirated copies out there. there are obviously thousands, if not millions, more copies of illegal versions of XP than there are of Vista, err ‘their latest operating system.’
It only makes sense that Microsoft is wanting to fight piracy any way that they can.
What’s the difference between this, and not allowing a pirated copy of a game to be played online? it’s annoying, yes, but hey, if you didn’t pay for it, can you really complain?
Just my 2 cents….
from the very first time i read the news on local newspaper and also the internet , i already knew that it is not ” blackout” it is just that your wallpaper will go blank , something like olderversion of window ,when something goes wrong with your desktop it will have a button on it , which say restore window something like that :d
The VirusTotal Scan shows that its a suspicious file:

Not surprised at all because RemoveWGA removes Windows validation from Windows computer. It’s not a virus that will harm your computer so antivirus provider flag RemoveWGA as a “suspicious” file. No need to panic.
What about if your using the “Special Xp Key” (thats not the proper name)
The key that is made to be used multiple times. (its for teachers to teach students how to install windows and do the updates etc…)
well, thanks to the student key Ii do not have such an issue.
thank you for the info Raymond
I haven’t done the SP3 update yet. Does SP3 install the latest version of WGA? After managing to keep it off my system for a couple of years, I can’t imagine Microsoft giving up an opportunity to shove WGA down the throats of those who haven’t yet installed it willingly.
alot of the bad anti-viruses said it was a suspicous or a trojan
well, i dnt really think “Gates” is going about it the right way. i’m not in support of piracy but how far would they (microsoft) have gone without pirated copies of their products. for instance, a bulk of the guys that ever got to use windows (xp,me,2000 etc) did so ‘cos they could afford the them-pirated of course!
i think they shld apply another method aside this “blackout” style
Does this occur even if i turn off the automatic updates and dont install anything from microsofts websites??
Thanks for the info
But if Gates wants to push sales of Vista, what better way then selling them for 50% off. (i still wouldnt buy it) A laptop can cost as low as $500 but Vista operating system is about $300-$400.
I was lucky I didn\’t press the Express Installation after the Windows Update pop up. Immediately I canceled the installation process after seeing the WGA stuff. Pheww…
when team ETH0 , which was famous with its WGA / OGA fixes , has left the scene for some security reasons , it seems that no other group is going to “help” to bypass microsoft WGA issue..
‘gates’ is just a part-timer in microsoft. its ballmer now. btw, i was using xp pro pirat3d edition with all updates done manually ( picked, downloaded , and installed ) up to july 08 updates ( including the SP3 ) . no ‘blackout’ or whatsoever. and obviously i didn’t installed any wga. i never turned on the auto update anyway. so i’m happy such thing didn’t occur to me.
just my 2 cents. if you’re using a pirate version , never treat it like you’re using an original one. never should and never be.
‘Q’ & ‘fito’ Gates doesn’t run the MS “dog and pony-show” and hasn’t for years, blame Monkey Boy(TM) aka Steve Ballmer.
I have paid-for copies of XP and Vista. I was one of the few (lucky me) caught by the server outage and now have problems after the motherboard on an OEM system died.
Legitimate users are affected by this rubbish too.
RemoveWGA 1.2 only removes the notification part, phoning home, and does not touch the validation part.
I also use pirated windows xp pro and used RemoveWGA to remove the WGA notification. That works, thanks.
Previously \\\”ngkh\\\” posted the VirusTotal results for RemoveWGA.exe where 10 out of 36 programs detected it as suspicious file. I therefore, tested again which i downloaded form softpedia.com and the result is here: http://www.virustotal.com/analisis/ad9bd8950f85b6eead94944f2d60d959 .That means more antivirus programs are detecting this file as suspicious!
não a conteceo nada rarara.
but mine its like .. the whole screen black out, not only the wallpaper and the icons are still there. no watermark too. so .. it’s a virus attack right ? ._.
Carmen, your computer’s symptom is most likely caused by virus and not the Windows Genuine Advantage.
WILL THEY TRACK ME DOWN, IF I JUST LET IT APPEAR??
my icons are also gone looks awful ..instaling removewga also didnt help .
it helped with the genuine window issue but my icons are gone !!! i mean they wer gone after i installed updates . how can i get them back ??
Thanks mate, another mysterie and very anoying thing solved!
gonna keep my eye on your blog in the future
I had a computer and had genuine advantage problem.I copied sex files to desktop and thsy were not there. I went to copy again and windows said they were there. I deleted the wga file in safe mode in the registry localmachine/software/ microsoft/windowsnt/wga file deleted waga folder restarted and ny folders were on desktop. Formated machine installed another xp pro and left automatic update off and I still got a advantage notice do you think they stored notice in boot track or in memory
Great stuff! Thanks.
Sir Raymond, thanks very much for the post! RemoveWGA 1.2 did the job!
When you install it you DO NOT HAVE to accept the genuine advantage.
Therefore it will never install if you decline.
