To burn a movie or TV episode with Nero Vision, I only need to select whether I want to Make CD or Make DVD, then import the AVI videos by selecting Add Video Files, create a menu if needed, and it will automatically encode the AVI video files to VCD or DVD format which can be played on my DVD player. However, I got really frustrated with my new laptop running Windows Vista and nearly wanted to format the hard drive to install Windows XP because Nero Vision just crashes when I import an AVI video file.

This problem has never happened on my desktop running Windows XP with Nero 8 but happened on the clean Windows Vista SP1 with all latest hotfixes and Nero 9.0.9.4d activated with a genuine license! At first I thought it was a bug on AMCDocBase.dll file because the APPCRASH window did say something about it. After spending an hour researching on this problem, I am glad that I found the cause of Nero Vision crashing when adding a video file.
At first I thought it had something to do with missing codecs because I did not install any codec pack on my laptop’s Acer. So I downloaded the latest K-Lite Codec Pack, installed it and tried importing the video file in Nero Vision, still the got the same Nero Vision APPCRASH window.
I checked the Nero Vision settings from Default Video Options and found something that could have caused the problem. In General tab, the video mode setting is blank. I went to my desktop running Windows XP with Nero 8, and found that PAL is selected for the Video Mode. I did the same on my Acer laptop running Nero 9, and voila! Nero Vision no longer crashes!
I don’t know why Nero 9 didn’t automatically set a video mode for me this time when there’s no such problem in Nero 8. An empty video mode causing Nero Vision to crash is really sloppy programming. They could have included a prompt asking the user to set the video mode if it is not configured rather than not telling anything at all and leaving Nero Vision to crash.
Anyway, to configure a video mode in Nero Vision, click the More button and then click Default Video Options button. The General tab should display, and select the video mode according to your country.

Some country uses PAL and some NTSC. NTSC is the video system or standard used in North America and most of South America. In NTSC, 30 frames are transmitted each second. Each frame is made up of 525 individual scan lines. PAL is the predominant video system or standard mostly used overseas. In PAL, 25 frames are transmitted each second. Each frame is made up of 625 individual scan lines.

Nero became VERY heavy like Norton products. I didn’t like Nero 9
Nero 9 is so bloated. It need haft hour to install all. It starting nero.exe time is very slow comparing the version 8. It just like Acrobat 6, but Acrobat 6 is improving in version 7, 8, and 9. But nero is the opposide, many says nero 6 is the lighter, nero 7 is heavy, nero 8 is heavie, and finally the most heavies is nero 9.
nice to know that ray! thanks
And that\\\’s why we have nero micro and lite!
@Hok: are you kidding me? Acrobat 9 is one of the worst bloated apps ever! After install it has almost 240MB and around 2000 registry entries! I use SumatraPDF! It has only 1,18 MB, 2 registry entries and it does the same thing as Acrobat reader (reads PDFs) LOL!
Oh! And let\\\’s not forget the update utility that Acrobat installs in the Windows startup!
BTW: Windows DVD Maker is any good? I see it supports a lot of formats and even lets you design the menu?
This is a useful detail Ray!
I got Nero 9.0. I tried to install it. It was taking too many time to start the installation. My Kaspersky Internet Security said there is a hidden installation in the system. So i was feared and terminated the installation. Anyway, I\’m still using Nero 8. It is working better.
Thanks Ray for information.
Good Luck!.
I Think BurnAware today is better solution for disc ripping, much lightweigh and free.

which version of burning Rom are you using i have Nero 8 but have not really used it yet. I have version 6 7 and 8 on cd but cannot decide which i loike better. i was burning alot of divx for awhile but i found that nero would no overburn. In most cases a divx is only 700 megs but i had a few run into 700-720 and nero would not burn due to the file size. i have seen that nero 8 has setting for burning divx although i have not usede them yet. i got it to run on the laptop but currently its stuck on my old desktop lol with no DVD burner. So i am curious whati can use to overburn a Divx to a CD most cd can handle 720 megs i jsut need to find the program to burn it. Ashampoo also has a pretty handy burner but less options available but if you want a good no nonsense burner then i like Ashampoo
Wow!! I purchased and dowloaded the Nero 9 Installation program last week. It took me 4 days to get a valid key. But guess what??? I have not and probably will never install this program. I can’t believe how many horror stories I have heard about this upgrade. Even a very good friend of mine went out and purchased Nero 9 because I told her Nero is what I’ve been using since version 1 was awesome!!! It has been an absolute nightmare for this person. I feel so bad!! What a waste of 50 bucks. Shame on your NERO!! I hope you read these blogs. You all should be ashamed at yourselves for what your company has become.
Thanks a lot budyy
Been having the same issue on my desktop system running Windows Vista Ultimate and Norton Anti-Virus 2009 Gaming Edition.
I just checked my Nero 9 and it was set at a Generic NTSC, not the United States NTSC. Not sure if that makes a difference. All I know is that I was able to burn one DVD and now it crashes every time while using Nero Vision. Vista says it is due to the Anti-Virus software, but I’m going to make this setting change in Nero 9 real quick and see if it works!
Nope that didn’t work either!
Nero 9 is just horribly slow. And I only tried to make a simple dia show of 50 slides, which always went OK with previous version 7. When typing a text on a slide, it appears letter by letter.
I can’t even imagine doing anything with video’s or music with this package. It’s simply no fun…
And if you think that Version 9 is so much better? Nope. No new functionalities, no improvements as compared to the previous versions. For instance, it’s still impossible to place the text on any spot in the picture.
Actually, I don’t understand why I have this package.
Anyone knows an alternative?
.
oh man … THANK YOU!
i spent the last 2 months looking for the solution to this problem in nero vision … i almost lost my mind. so THANK YOU, really …
