    Malware

    Windows Live Messenger (along with other networks such as Yahoo! Messenger and AOL Instant Messenger) is often used as a conduit or “vector” for delivering malicious software such as spyware, viruses, worms and trojans to unsuspecting computer users. The two methods used by hackers to deliver malware over the IM vector are (1) sending a file transfer with a virus-infected file, and (2) delivering a message with socially engineered content containing a web address (URL) containing active malicious code. Viruses and worms such as W32.Yalove or Troj/Msnfake-L have been identified as targeting users of Windows Live Messenger over the past few years.

    Threat of infection

    The threat of infection by these two methods is substantial and growing. The IM Security Center [32], a collaboration between security companies and corporations, has tracked attacks over IM since 2003 and shows well over 1300 distinct attacks over the public IM networks. The first half of 2007 saw an 84% increase in IM attacks over the first half of 2006. While IM-specific attacks remain a small percentage of overall virus and malware threats, the continued growth in usage of IM, along with the rapid adoption of IM in the workplace (See Instant Messaging) make IM an attractive vector for hackers, and both individuals and companies must take precautions to avoid infection.

    Worms and viruses are discovered on a regular basis by security companies, particularly by the three companies with network-certified IM-specific security products, Akonix Systems, FaceTime Communications, and Symantec. According to IM security researchers at Akonix, the mean number of new threats per month identified during the period January 2006 through June 2008 is 28, with a high of 88 in October 2006, and a standard deviation of 18.[32]

    Common methods

    The most common method of delivering a malicious payload is the use of social engineering to construct a message that appears to be coming from a contact on the recipient’s contact list. A socially engineered message is one that is written in a friendly, informal manner, that could easily be mistaken as coming from a friend. The message usually will say something like “Click here to see pics of me from vacation!” or “Is this you?” with a web address — known as a “poison URL” — for the recipient to click.

    Upon clicking the web address, the recipient is connected to a website containing active content, which is immediately downloaded to the recipient’s computer. In most cases, the payload contains an installer, a number of hidden files containing text, and code which causes the same socially engineered message with poison URL to be sent to every contact on the contact list. When the message is sent to all contacts, the cycle starts again, as each contact believes they are receiving a message from a trusted friend. In this manner, IM-borne malware is capable of propagating very rapidly through company and external networks.

    Sorry,it’s already Solved..I Checked that my modified theme is crashed with Windows Live Communications services,so if all of you want to use this RC2 Beta version of WLM,do not use modified theme(AlienGUise,WindowsBlind,etc)

    Microsoft has been release Windows Live v3.0 to public since about Agust. The MSN Live Messenger 2009 have been left beta state. It is now RC State. When the is nothing bug to find, it will rename final.

    Microsoft is the WORST company and always has been. They spend far too much money on advertising than on the actual service/product production itself.

    I have downloaded Windows Live Messenger 9.0 (Final) – NOT Beta and it works perfectly EXCEPT ONE HUGE FUCKING THING…

    No matter what you do, your contact list will not be displayed. Your contacts can’t see you and you can’t see them and there’s nothing you can do to solve the problem.

    Not even if you manually import your contact list…

    Huge bug, and will take Microshite a decade to fix it and announce the fix. What utter crap wasting my bandwidth and time downloading the stupid thing.

    I’ll have to revert back to 8.5 (not Beta – as that doesn’t work perfectly either).

    Actually, I might sign up to 8hands and download that as I can use all my IM accounts in one!

    I had the same problem. If you are using AVG, click web shield, go to the instant messaging tab, unclick MSN protection, Save changes. Or go to appdata, then search your MSN folder from there and delete your hotmail folder.

    Happy New Year!!! Well, not sure whether to laugh or cry, downloaded 2009 live messenger and got a very pretty interface but now cant use webcam at all. Strange that dont you think? Would thought webcam would be first thing the old bug checkers would sniff out. Works fine with Yahoo and Skype. Any help fixing this big steaming heap of xxxx besides me telling all my contacts to use Skype?

    If you have problems signing in to live messenger, maybe you have not all the .net frameworks installed. I had only verion 2 sp1 and after downloading and installing version 3, live messenger worked again! (I searched the windows update site for it)

    I went to windows update, no updates, but I didn’t have the newer .net frameworks!

    I had installed an older version of XP (without SP3), than did all the updates through windows update.

    So last night I upgraded to WLM2009 and was having the problem that a couple of you mentioned with wlcomm.exe erroring out everytime i signed into messenger or mail. I did a google search and found this site and read through it. I to use Windowblinds like a couple of others who were having this problem. I unloaded Windowblinds and the problem was solved. So thanks to those who had figured that out.

    Thought I would post here though and let those of you having this problem know that after a couple hours I was downloading some new stuff and wanted to try it out so I started Windowblinds and loaded up a couple different themes. WLM stayed running when I did this. I was figuring that when I restarted the pc it would go back to having the same error but it hasn’t. It restarted with both Windowblinds and WLM running and I just ran WLM Desktop and had no problem with that either.

    Just thought I’d leave that bit of info for those who could use it.

    Okay I should’ve finished checking all of my setups before commenting I guess.

    The above comment was made in reference to the setup on my laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium and is still accurate.

    I also have a desktop running Windows XPSP2 Home and tried doing the same thing but continue getting the error problem. The only difference between the WLM2009 setups on the two pcs is the fact that for some reason even though I have it checked to auto sign in for some reason it will not sign itself in on the XP setup.

    Also when I had WLM running on the laptop already and signed it in on the desktop (with it set to let me sign in in multiple locations) it would then give me the error on the laptop as soon as i signed in in both places. However once i clicked to close the program on the laptop and then restarted it it runs fine every time.

    80080005 for me too. When will Micro$oft stop releasing this utter shit? I noticed if I go to my Advanced connection settings and try a HTTP test it fails and gives some other similar error code. Everything else succeeds, including the regular connection test — what dismal trash.

    In my case I solved it by enabling DCOM with a default configuration.
    This worked on two different Windows XP SP3 PCs and you can always check it
    by looking at event viewer to see if there are any DCOM errors at the time
    you try to connect.

    Hi, I just want to share my experience with the new version of Live Messenger. After updating to 14.0.8050.1202 I got the \”Send or Don\’t send\” error message while signing in. It contained the following:

    # Windows Live Communications Platform
    # AppName: wlcomm.exe AppVer: 14.0.8050.1202
    # ModName: kernel32.dll
    # ModVer: 5.1.2600.5512 Offset: 00009eca

    Messenger would still work as long as I didn\’t click on either \”Send or Don\’t send\”. But very, very anoying.

    Then I read a post here from taro which said … do not use modified theme(AlienGUise,WindowsBlind,etc) & guess what – I\’m using Windowblinds.

    I unloaded WB and everything worked like a charm. But how boring was it to see windows xp pro (eng) without WB. Extremely boooring to say the least, but then I found a solution in WB.

    # Start WB (Windows Blinds)
    # go to Settings
    # go to Per Application
    # click Add per application setting
    # find your msnmsgr.exe in your filesystem
    // for me it was standard:
    // C:\\Program files\\Windows Live\\Messenger
    # Mark msnmsgr.exe and click add
    # In the Per application settings box I marked the first option ¤ Total exclusion & clicked ok
    # In WB I clicked apply changes
    # Start Live Messneger

    //during this setup messenger was off
    //now I can enjoy both new live messenger & WB style winXP

    I hope it this helped someone out. Thanx to taro & Zakai for leading me in the right direction and like Zakai wrote: with WB new updates and newer themes you might not need this soloution either.

    I’m running XP SP3 and keep getting the error “Windows Live Communications Platform has encountered a problem and needs to close.” each time I try signing in. Also, clicking on more info gives me this each time:

    On a similar note, I’ve two accounts on this system, one limited user (which I use daily), and an administrator account. When I logged into the administrator account I was able to sign in and use Live Messenger with no issues. However, for some reason it refuses to work in my limited user account =(.

    I’ve already tried all (that I’ve found) the suggested fixes online.

     i had problems with webcam on windows live messenger 9 update .. the cam would not be detected…
     upon lots of tries and re installs it still wouldnt work .. even changed cam , drivesrs .. etc..

     finaly solved it by removing all reg files using CCleaner
     then a fresh reinstall of WLM9
     this worked and cam is now fine ..

     Heyy, same prb as a few guys here, webcam doesnt, it DID work for a couple of days and now it’s telling me “we are unable to run audio and video setup”
     though I can still use the cam with the software that came with it and other online implications. (No I’m not running any other programs and yes, I’ve tried re installing msn and webcam drivers… only fix I’ve ever found was a system restore… but I’ve had to do it twice already and would like to find a quicker workaround)

     I’m not having any of the same problems people here are. At first I couldn’t sign in, but that was only because I used a self installer and forgot to install the other core parts.
     I can sign in fine and all my settings/webcam works fine.
     It’s just every couple of minutes it signs out and reconnects!
     It says the service is fine but it keeps signing out on me, and it’s realllyyyyy starting to drive me up the wall.
     It’s happening with most of my friends aswell and i still can’t find a fix for it online.
     Anyone else having this problem?

     Ok folks i had the same problem, “Windows live communication platform has encountered a problem and needs to close” but i have now solved it, (at least for myself).
     I read a post by someone else saying that windows blinds was the problem, i use alienguise. For those that dont know, windows blinds is an appearance package that lets you change the look of your windows, i use XP so the standard look is a silver or blue header bar with a red square and white X as the close button.
     OK this is what i did,
     Click your start menu and click on the search button.
     Where it asks what to search, select All files and folders.
     Set your search to look in your main hard drive, usually C.
     Type in the search box wlcomm and click search.
     Within a few seconds it will find two items, the second one on my search was the one i wanted. In the “Name” column it simply says wlcomm, in the “In Folder” column it says “C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Contacts.
     Right click this one and select Properties.
     Click the “compatibility” tab and under “Display settings” click the check box that says “Disable visual themes”, you want a tick in this box after you have clicked it.
     Click “OK” and you should now be able to use messenger without the error message box coming up.
     I have signed in and out several times without any problems.
     Oh yeah, i am still using Alienguise for those of you that uninstalled your appearance packages, you dont have to.
     Hope this helps you guys out.

     Just to sum up, i have absolutely no problems using the latest version of live messenger since i solved the “Windows live communication platform” error.
     My OS is XP service pack 3, i was sent an e-mail from microsoft telling me of the latest version and downloaded it from a link in the e-mail.
     If every one else is experiencing problems it maybe that you are experiencing software conflictions particular to your own computers. This is just a hunch.
     Read my post, #115 and try what i did to see if this solves any of your problems.

     yes i see a lot of problems with web cam here for some of you if you just go to tools and menue and run the cam set up and let live windows no what cam ur have fro the drop down list it should work for you …but if not you will have to uninstall it and go back ..old messenger …but i my self have a new problem with the cam it all works fine but the picture was no where near as good or clear as my old messenger …..so yes reinstalled back to old messenger

     and yes web cam pic back to normal so it seem they have 1 or 2 bugs to fix yet why they release it to the public with all the bugs in it beats me

     Hmm ok so I got the 2009… Fixed the video problem through McAfee. But the problem that remains is that all sounds for incoming email, messages, contact sign ons don’t work. Yeah, I know the default sounds are real low. I got my speakers cranked up. The sounds and alerts starts to work by rebooting WLM 2009 but after an hour or less the sound doesn’t work again. What the hell?!

     whichh i think was onne of the best parts of the old msn.
     nnd it takes the mick to uninstall.

     you cant use control panel either.
     so installed something called ‘Perfect Uninstaller’,

     Right, I downloaded WLM, because I had to use this one to actually use MSN, the old one was out of date.

     Now the last few time I’ve tried to do this, I’ve had this message: Signing into Windows Live Messenger failed because the service is temporarily unavalible. Please try again later. Error Code: 8001012e.

     So, I was told this was to do with Messenger Plus! Live (the add-on you use for the colour etc?). So, I’ve uninstalled this and Hopper Live. Reinstalled WLM, still, same error code.

     So last night, I tried to download WLM again, but it didn’t work. So, I re-installed the old, 8.5 MSN. And it now turns out, I have to use WLM to be able to sign in. I reinstall the new WLM, and once again, error code 8001012e.

     Does anybody have any solution for this? I’m really, really get p*ssed off with this. >_>

     2. The multiple login facilty (which is of use to very few people anyways) closes remote windows when a local machine is signed out, losing any conversations waiting to be read there. This renders it near-useless.
     3. No means of adjusting cam settings from the convo window. Why remove this? Stupid and needless change
     4. Vid and sound quality seems to be worse than prev. version, cam window won’t always connect
     5. No status “Connecting… connected” on cam window, so u don’t know if the remote party is viewing
     6. Minimised window buttons don’t flash when a message is pending – a major nuisance when messaging more than one person at once
     7. Severe problems with syncing contacts to e.g. a phone or the resident mailer
     8. Apparently no means anymore of backing up contact list
     9. Can no longer share backgrounds, replaced by a near-useless “scenery” effort… needless change
     10. Installs an unwanted service which has to be stopped after installation
     11. Although pretty, many of the new contact “views” use too much screen so only a few contacts can be seen without scrolling around constantly
     12. Vid window border changes color, needlessly, as status alters and this is distracting

     Whatever you do, DON’T install this mess-up on a production machine unless u have ensured, on a machine that doesn’t matter, that u really like it. I have yet to meet anyone who does….

     Removed it and reinstalled the older version. No way will I run it unless these problems are resolved.

     well for the ppl who are having 8001012e I may have the solution. it has to do with “language for programs no Unicode” and where you find it? in the local configuration option in advanced option. if your OS is originally english then it has to be English, spanish then spanish, etc etc
     - how can I be sure? because I have the same problem…
     my OS is in spanish but I selected in the opt “language for programs no unicode” Korean since I need to…
     with this configuration it pop ups the 8001012e.
     but if I switch it to spanish, restart OS then try to log in, it goes smoothly without problem…
     I don’t have any idea why msn staff changed this stuff but it really messed up! I went back to 8.5 which doesn’t care how I configured my OS.
     Give a try, change the option “language or idiom for programs no unicode” to the language same as the OS then it will work… it did for me… but I stick to 8.5 since I need to use korean stuffs ^^; gl

     There is a prompting at the left bottom corner of the screen to ask you to upgrade to the latest Messenger , I just followed the instructions. I deleted the Windows essential thru the install/remove program and tried to install the version 8.5 but it said I must go for the latest one. Really fustrating! Can you help, bro?

     FOUND A CURE!!! I FOUND A FIX THAT FINALLY WORKED..

     I found this worked for me:
     I had the same error with the windows communications platform and not being able to log in.
     I have xp sp3

     The file wlcomm.exe is found in the directory
     c: program files\windows live\contacts

     Right click and go to properties

     select compatibility

     I selected it to run in windows 95 compatibility mode and disable visual themes

     I was then able to log into MSN messenger 2009.

     Don’t know what that’s all about but thanks to someone earlier on this thread.

     This problem was driving me mad.
