Like the saying goes, a picture tells a thousand words. Sometimes I get computer users in forum asking for help but they couldn’t explain the problem very well and that made is guessing all of us guessing what is exactly the problem. When asked for a screenshot, the user doesn’t know how to make one. So I am always in the lookout for a good screen capture software that can easily capture screenshots of the desktop or active window and then upload it to an image hosting website.

The best or easiest to use screenshot capture software for computer newbies had to be portable, easy to capture screenshot and also has a built-in uploader to upload to screenshot to free image hosting websites such as imageshack or stashbox. The only screen capture software that came close to all the requirements above is Shup, the free multi-host screenshot, image and file uploader for Windows.

Shup is great for uploading all kinds of files, especially when combined with the included Windows shell extension. With it, you can upload with Shup by right-clicking on a file in Explorer! Not only can Shup upload all kinds of files, it can also upload to many different hosts, including Flickr, ImageShack, PhotoBucket, ScrnShots, Stashbox,, REAPER Resource Repositorium and Waffle Images.

Shup has 3 ways to capture screenshot:
- Right click the Shup system tray icon and select Capture Screen
- From Shup window, go to Tools > Capture Screen
- Hotkey; Shup by default uses Ctrl+Alt+D to capture the whole screen and Ctrl+Alt+K to capture only active window. The hotkeys can be changed.

After capturing the screenshot, Shup Image Editor will open with the image that you captured. Shup Image Editor is designed to make creating/editing and uploading images as easy as possible. The image editor provides a paintbrush and a highlighter pen for drawing, as well as a rectangle tool for flood filling and cropping your images. And it supports unlimited-ish levels of undo, so you can roll back changes if you like. You can also upload your image as many times as you want, directly from the editor (known as checkpointing around Shup HQ). To upload the image, simple click the upload icon and click Yes when asked for confirmation.

By default Shup will upload the captured screenshot to Stashbox, a free anonymous file hosting. The screenshot that is uploaded to Stashbox via Shup will NOT be publicly accessible until you share the link/URL of the image. It also supports many other image/file hosting and they can be selected / configured from Preferences. When finished uploading the screenshot image, the link to the image will be automatically copied to clipboard. Now you can share the captured image by pasting the link in forums or anywhere.

The Shup installer file (shup_install.exe) is only 688KB in size. There is no Shup portable but you can copy the whole Shup folder from Program Files to your removable USB flash drives. Shup’s configurations are stored in shup.ini and when Shup detect it has been run from a removable drive, the archive_dir and skin_dir values will reset.
