I didn’t spend too much time solving this problem because I immediately knew that it is surely caused by McAfee SiteAdvisor since the problem started after I installed SiteAdvisor. If you have both McAfee SiteAdvisor and Windows Live Messenger 2009 installed, please take the following actions until a patch is out from McAfee because there are some incompatibility problems.
The workaround is pretty simple. All you need to do is to disable McAfee SiteAdvisor from monitoring msnmgr.exe but there is no option to do that. You’ll have to manually go to C:\Program Files\McAfee\SiteAdvisor\ and look for the file sasets.ini. Open the sasets.ini with notepad or your favorite text editor, locate the section titled [msnmsgr.exe] and change the value to 0 (1 means enable and 0 means disable). Refer to the image below for a clearer explanation.

Save the file and close it. You can either restart your computer for changes to take effect OR simply terminate and reopen Windows Live Messenger 2009. Yeah it’s frustrating that Windows Live Messenger 2009 has so many bugs and incompatibilities but no worries, I’ll slowly help you all to look for solutions and workarounds to make it work rather than downgrading back to MSN 8.5. According to Wikipedia, Windows Live Messenger is no longer beta and the latest version is Build 14.0.8064.206 released on 12 February 2009. You can head on to http://messenger.live.com/ to download the latest Live installer (wlsetup-custom.exe) which can automatically update your Messenger if it detected there’s an update.

No wonder that I could not make calls though messenger.
Thanks for the info Raymond.
I’ve just stop using McAfee Site Advisor recently. I think WOT works better than SA with most the site ratings frequently updated..
Thanks alot Raymond (1st)
thanks ray ray for a nice info eventhough i hardly use WLM but now iam trying to learn things from it
thanks bro.it helps a lot.
I don\’t have anything that is McAfee, not even a program files folder, but I get 0×8ac70202 anyway. Hopefully WLM gets updated soon, or a fix comes out, because this is annoying.
Hi,
I did the above but when I go to save the file it says
Cannot create the C:\\Program Files\\McAfee\\SiteAdvisor\\sasets.ini file
Make sure that the path and file name are correct.
Help!!!
thanks raymond but it wont let me save saset with the new settings could you help me please
I’ve just done that its kind of working still says I have no webcam rather than a soundcard lol which it decided i didn’t have before, the best way around not being able to save the file is to save it to the desktop and drag and drop it back in to the directory and replace the old one. I think ill be putting the 8.1 back on again anyways.
thnx

Hey, thank you for that very helpful tip.
I had the same problem and I didn’t want to uninstall McAfee site advisor because it gives me useful info when surfing the net. I did what you told and it worked.
Just a note, I had to save the file on the desktop then to cut and paste it in the original directory, plus the change didn’t take effect after restarting the messenger but after restarting the computer.
When I try to save a popup from Notepad says: Cannot creat the C:\Program Files\McAfee\SiteAdvisor\sasers.ini file.
Make sure that the path and file name are correct.
Please help!
Ok people who have this problem: Cannot create the C:\Program Files\McAfee\SiteAdvisor\sasers.ini file.
Make sure that the path and file name are correct.
You copy the file you want to change, change the copy, and replace the original with the copy—worked for me!
Can’t save the changed file. Tried to copy, but still will not allow me to save!! Help!!
Success! If can’t save the file directly, copy to documents and rthen paste back to eplace the original, making sure to keep the .ini suffix.
Messenger now ran the audio & video setup and all seems to be OK.

Ok, I changed the settings and saved it perfectly fine, i shut downwindows, made sure it’s the latest versionand then re-started WLM. It’s saying I canstarta videocall but not letting me send webcam. I got a friend to send mywebcam link but its still coming up with (0×8ac70202).
Any idea what the hell is going on?
McAfee just updated the Site Advisor and , at least for me, the problem is solved…I am free to Cam away.
I’m having trouble with MSN too. My Windows Live Messenger (2009) is not saving my settings. As in, its not saving my display name, personal message or display picture. I’ll change it, then sign back in a few hours later and it has reverted back to what it was BEFORE i change things!
Help!

Hi Ray,
I appreciate the fix. However, what about for those of us who do not have McAfee Site Advisor? I have no McAfee programs at all and yet, I’m still getting this error. Please help!!
Corrected McAfee and got video okay but no audio in sync with video. Error 0X8ac&0013 -messenger not available appears. Audio (not in sync) available by pressing F2. It records and it is passed on to contact when F2 released. I contacted McAfee and they claim they are not responsible for Audio problem. Has anybody solved the problem where there is no audio in sync with video?
my webcam wont work and ave done that, whats wrong with it :@
Further to my message dated April 22, I uninstalled Windows Live Messenger only version for 2009 and installed Windows Live Messenger Version 8.1. It worked okay and am getting audio in sync with video.
I don’t have any McAfee SiteAdvisor but can’t use a webcam with messenger with the same error code!
Any idea?

Don’t waste your time, MS have forced the v14 upgrade and MS webcams don’t work with it period and they are not going to bring out a fix.
They will soon launch an alternative to Facebook and want you to use that.

For all of you who do not have McAfee site advisor:
I got this error today without McAfee, and I realized what the problem was. I tried to “share my webcam with others”, but then it gave me a different error – it was in use by another program.
I’d had my default webcam program open, thinking it would help. I promptly closed it, and video chat worked again!
Valla bre llud ishe ti ncncncnc ku me dit une ku je hi ti bre ti qifsha krejt robt :@
