Many of you tried to extract the Kon-Boot ISO image file but ended up seeing that it’s blank. The image file is NOT blank and even the coder of Kon-Boot mentions that. It’s just that you can’t see it in Windows. For those that are having trouble in putting Kon-Boot ISO to USB, I will show you how easy it is to do that. Remember, computers are made easy in Raymond.CC ![]()
There are 2 types of Kon-Boot images. The floppy image and CD ISO. You can use UNetbootin, a tool that allows you to create bootable Live USB drives for a variety of Linux distributions from Windows or Linux, without requiring you to burn a CD. The trick here is to use the floppy image instead of the CD ISO. If you don’t get what am I saying, just follow the few simple step-by-step on how to burn Kon-Boot ISO to USB.
1. Download latest version of UNetbootin and install.
2. Download Kon-Boot floppy image and extract the zip file to get FD0-konboot-v1.1-2in1.img file.
3. Plug in your USB flash drive.
4. Run UNetbootin, select Diskimage, click the drop down menu to select Floppy and browse for the FD0-konboot-v1.1-2in1.img file.

5. Make sure USB Drive is selected for Type and the drive letter is the USB flash drive that you want to install Kon-Boot. Click OK. It should take a few seconds to finish installing Kon-Boot floppy image into your USB.
6. You can click the Reboot Now button and boot up your computer with USB. You may have to set your BIOS to do that. On newer computers, there should be a hotkey to show the Boot Menu. My MSI motherboard hotkey is F8.
7. If you get it right, you should see a UNetbootin screen with 10 seconds countdown to select Default from the list. You can either hit enter to immediately boot Kon-Boot or just wait until 10 seconds for UNetbootin to automatically boot the default profile for you.

8. When you see the Krypto Logic screen, hit a key to continue. Just wait for Windows or Linux to boot normally. Now you can login to any user account without entering a password!
I have no idea why UNetbootin doesn’t work with Kon-Boot CD ISO image file, maybe it is not compatible. However, you can see that UNetbootin supports a pretty good amount of linux distros and possibly other ISO that is not in the list. Well at least we got Kon-Boot into USB thanks to the floppy image file.

Does this works on Windows 7 32Bit. I’ve forgotten my password once on Windows 7. Thx in advance.
4 more info. mybe i thing u can use this tool ‘Hp Usb Disk Storage Format Tool ‘also
Firdaus, Kon-Boot works on Windows 7.
Mazani, I don’t think you can use HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool to burn an ISO to a USB. You can only create a DOS startup disk on USB with it.
thank ray 4 your info
gr8 ray.
Its brilliant Raymond
thanks in advance.
Mr Raymond i have read ur Ask Raymond:Which is the best antivirus? column tomorrow..
But i totally disagree with u..
try Quickheal it is the best antivirus i have ever used.
I am sure that u will love it too..
oops sorry a grammatical mistake in my previous comment.
Thanks, but it doesn’t work on my computer.
I see the UnetBootin menu, and konboot launches and I see the kryptoslogic splashscreen.
If I remove the USB key now, then press enter, at the end of the process konBoot fails to launch windows, as it is unable to read original MBR.
If I keep the USB stick at its place, at the end of the process, instead of launching windows, I see the UnetBootin menu again…
So ?
The second URL
2. Download Kon-Boot floppy image and extract the zip file to get FD0-konboot-v1.1-2in1.img file
Does not work… Any suggestions ?
That is gr8 Raymond.. But can we burn in this way windows XP iso image to USB for installation through USB!!
I saw some debate regarding Kon-Boot to USB, many were wondering how. Thanks for lighting the path to it.
Raymond. I hav done the same procedure u mentioned above. But Kon-Boot again and again rebooting and giving the UNetbootin screen only.
Ray,
whenever i use kon boot cd,after pressing the Enter key i get a messege saying
“Windows NT has not found enough extended memory. 7MB of extended memory is
reuiqred to run Windows NT. YOu may need to upgrade your computer or run a
configuration program provided by the manufacturer.
Memory Map:……..”
How can i solve this Ray???? PLEASE HELP
I checked my memory[512mb]it’s fine and the computer is working well.As far as i know there is no booting problems. It takes even my bootable xp cd,ubuntu cd,PCLogin now cd,OphCrack cds very well.Whenever i use those mentioned cds they work very well…..
PLEASE SOLVE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I WOULD BE VERY GRATEFULL!!!!!!!!!!!
@pankaj: If you like QuickHeal and it works perfectly for you, then continue using it.
@Franck: Did you download the CD-ISO or Floppy Image?
@Rixiu: You should learn how to extract a ZIP file first
@Madhu: Download the Floppy Image, not the CD-ISO.
i dont seem to understand why ppl go for stuff like quickheal when theres kaspersky around…either that person is a newbe at computers or he/she does not have sound knowledge of viruses and have never been attacked by a good one like the rest of us
yay ray thx finally i can use kon-boot to usb…using a CD for such a small file is a complete waste and for a floppy..no one knows whether its gonna work the next second
raymond..i can use the download link in step.1~
cant reach the network it says..
Its probably because the ISO file has the IMG file inside…
Ray, have you tested if it works? It doesn’t work for me. Kon-Boot kept on looping and never went on to the Windows OS boot screen.
Am I missing some steps?!
@Jon: Definitely it works on my side or else I won’t post it.
Make sure you use the Floppy Image, NOT the CD-ISO!
raymond, i tried all of these:
i downloaded it andextracted and then burned it to my USB. But after booting kon-boot, the Unet Menu comes again and again.
hey ray.Did you figure out my problem???????????
Thank u for the UNetbootin tool but its neither working on my desktop(old one) nor on the laptop(newer). I get to see the UNetbootin screen again and again.
i believe this should be possible some day! awesome
thanks Raymond
Thanks Ray for another great post!
Wow, I was actually expecting you to pursue this subject (Kon-Boot to USB, as others have been asking for), Raymond. Thank you!

for example, if ma bro uses a win xp. will he notice that i enterd? (viewed user name changed for instance?, instead of say “Ahmedoz”, he finds “administrator”, or “kon boot” etc)
cant test atm in ma pc, bios dosnt support USB (WAY too lazy to buy a CD either
)
The same problem with me!
Help raymond….im getting the same result as Barti

thanks ray for the tip anyway.
Hi Raymond !
I definitely used the floppy image. I followed step by step your instructions.
I see we are many to encounter this same UNetBootin menu loop problem…
Hope you’ll help !
Thanks in advance
I get the same results as Barti. I used only the floppy image. Gotta be doing something wrong.
it asks me to select Distribution. which 1 i shuld select?
Making all steps right, don´t working.
I maked too many tries and not work.
I yet configured the motherboard in several modes, but none.
Someone working? I see anyone… in all comments…
Maybe… just works in a few motherboards…
Same prob as others…looping menu…m sure i used d FD image…was really lookin 4wrd 2 use it…
konboot disk is something like a rootkit, that loads to memory before OS and blocks OS’s mechanism of verification. if you open floppy image with archiver or write it on floppy, there are no files. Author wrote konboot in TASM, so the diskette contains raw code for processor without anything else. ISO image is empty too, except diskette image added as boot, so no need to try to write the ISO image of konboot to flash-drive.
The UNetbootin utility just stupidly copies necesary files then makes the flash-drive bootable with syslinux and adds to syslinux.cfg strings to load disk image with syslinux boot manager. It handles Linux CD-images only and not all of them may work after installation tu USB drive. UNetbootin is just stupid grafic interface and contains nothing useful.
As I tried to add konboot to my multiboot flashdrive, I met some difficults. When USB-Flash disk is chosen as bootable, it is mapped as hd0 – the first hard drive of computer. So after konboot loading, it chains the boot to the first bootable drive in system. So the flash-drive boots again and again. I tested it at home on my Intel DP43TF, and tomorrow I will test it at work on MSI, ASUS and Gigabyte motherboards. Mapping of disk by default depends to BIOS of motherboard as far as I know. If I find the way to run konboot from USB-disk, I will write about it here in comments.
Anyway, thank you, Raymond, for your blog.
Sorry for bad English, I’m from Russia
Good luck to all
2. Download Kon-Boot floppy image
the link dosen’t work
????
can u re post it ??
thanx Ray
Thanks Raymond, very nice tip.
Umm Raymond I have the same problem as the others were posting. I download Unetbooting & the floppy img file. I extracted, install using the unetboot and I can’t seem to proceed on the log in menu it keeps going back to the Unetbooting page then Kon-boot, the log in menu doesn’t show.
Please HELP!!

If i mount the floppy image to my usb drive, it loops once the kernal has been loaded.
I have also tried changing the startup order of the computer so that it boots from HDD 1st before usb, then manually select to boot from USB from startup.
AKA – it does not work for me on two seperate computers, but i do see it trying to work.
Maybe there is a way in editing the syslinux.cfg to boot from HDD1 so that we can manually boot it afterwards.
Tony
Thanks Ray for hearing our prayers
got same looping problem. i think it got somthing to do with me having more than one harddisk connected, and each harddisk has more than one windows installed..
i dont think kon boot support dual booting yet

Thanks !
Same for me I’m sure that I have downloaded the floppy img.
I see the UnetBootin menu, and konboot launches and I see the kryptoslogic splashscreen.

Raymond, Please assist
Thank you, Barti. Write here as Piotr Bania answer.
I Used Grub4dos to do that and it worked so fine.{Tested it many times on many computers}
The How to is as follows:
1- Install Grub4dos or use Grub installer {search for it on the internet} and make your USB flash disk a bootable
2- copy konboot.img {floppy image version}to your USB flash {on the root of it }
3- download memdisk.bin and copy it to the same place as konboot.img {search for it on Internet too}
4- add an entry in the file menu.lst {on USB flash root} … like this :
title Kon-Boot
root (hd0,0)
kernel (hd0,0)/memdisk.bin
initrd=/konboot.img
that’s all you need. Then you will have kon-bbot installed on your USB flash disk and you can add different tools too.
search for Grub4dos options and capabilities
That’s ALL.
ASFOUR
He had n’t reply…
I wait his reply and I try to make a USB Kon-Boot with other technics ^^
Thanks !
Asfour I can’t find Grub4dos and memdisk.bin !!
Can you give me this files please ?
Thanks !

Can you please give a detailed step-by-step instructions on how you managed to do it???
@Asfour : I have the same problem than Rahul Isola can you make a tuto for us ?
Thanks !
did any one got the solution ….dat how to overcome with this plm????
basic laptop
>>KON-BOOT ver. 1.0 – ready! h4×0Rin uH?
>>Checking SMAP BIOS entries…
>>Dummy BIOS detected, trying to fix SMAP entries.
>>Booting up ! -EOT
plz reply………raymond ……..where are you……..
any1 out here……
thnx buddy
Rahul Isola & Barti:
it does loop back again to the Grub menu but it did the work really.
Just boot to Hard Disk from the Grub menu and you will see it is just WORKED.
Make an entry in Grub menu in the menu.lst file to boot from Hard Disk or use the following one:
title Boot from hard disk
map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd0)
map –hook
chainloader (hd0)+1
boot
JUST TRY IT…!!!
Hey Asfour… thanks for pointing to the Grub4 – it’s interesting project.
Is there any tutorial that you would recommend me so I can learn the commands? help command when I boot using Grub doesn’t help me much.
I’m especially interested in knowing how to mount ISOs… managed to mount WinXPInstall.iso with:
title WindowsXP
map –mem (fd0)/WinXP.iso (hd32)
map –hook
chainloader (hd32)
… but konboot.iso won’t work with this commands. I mean it seems that image is mounted… after chainloader command it gives me two lines of text… and just stands there. When I type in boot to force booting – it says -> Error 8 : Kernel must be loaded before booting
Tnx
There are lots of resources out there for grub4dos, check out bootland or the 911cd forums. You can’t boot directly from a windows install cd – once the kernel loads at install then you lose all mappings to “virutal cds” that you may have made. You can install winxp from usb (see msfn forums) but not in the way you describe…
Hi everyone , I manged to get this all done (thanks to Asfour for telling us about Grub4dos)
Asfour’s way wont work, So here how to do it.
First get Grub4dos from here: http://uploadbud.com/files/5B82M4YL/Grub4dos.rar
Now start grubinst_gui.exe and select your your flash (Double Check it – and i let you figure things out yourself)
from Grub4dos copy/paste grldr and grub to your usb flash.
Obtain FD0-konboot-v1.1-2in1.img (From here http://www.piotrbania.com/all/kon-boot/data/FD0-konboot-v1.1-2in1.zip ) and put .img file into your flash memory
Make a file called menu.lst (hint: make sure its NOT ending with .txt – other wise I say stop and this directions not for you) containing the following:
title Koon-Boot
map (hd0,0)/FD0-konboot-v1.1-2in1.img (fd0)
map –hook
map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd0)
map –hook
chainloader (fd0)+1
rootnoverify (fd0)
That’s all it will pass and everything would be fine.
For others who wants to know more. I am using syslinux and grub4dos with this in syslinux.cfg
label Gurb4dos
kernel /grub.exe
and the same steps goes from here. If someone found a way to do it all with syslinux feel free to speak and yeah you could use ubnkern and ubninit instead of .img , if you know whats i am talking about
One question, does it support NTFS harddisk. I had followed the Raymonds way, formated flashdrive in fat32. Looks like PC boots from flash drive (but no obvious GUI) and nothing happens. Is it a problem because my harddisk is in NTFS system?
Will try and see Frax method..
OK, I’m not able to figure out. I can’t boot from USB
Raymond, do this method will erase all files in our flashdrive?
after installing these,,, the bios dont show the option to boot frm removal drive…:S.(removal drive was the floppy)…iam supposed to select the flopy rite ?. as the first booting device?.
I’ll try it right now for a friend who has been victim of a bad joke. However, if “ABC Formation, 2001″ tells you about something, don’t hesitate and e-mail me!
Thanks for all, gud job.
Hey
I see the UNetbootin screen then the Krypto Logic screen but after that nothing happens. If i push any button then blank screen comes. If i don’t push any button then i see the unetbootin screen forever.
I downloaded the flopy version, not the cd one.
PLease help me to solve my problem.
Thanks
pama
I try what you say. it works fine but on my XP professional I can not manage to access the bios to ask to boot on the usb (I have a tablet PC). and when I put the USB at the boot time I have an error asking me to remove the disk.
what could I do?
I feel the access to the bios is protected by admin right
Hi, I tried it on 5 different PC/Laptop and it works to boot from the USB, but I had on each PC a different problem. Once I only got a black screen, nothing else, on the next I´ve seen the main screen to select the OS but after that nothing happened anymore, I also got the error message “dummy bios detected” and on the last two PCs it didnt boot at all. All this errors seems to depend on the installation of the OS and its settings. After USB I tried it with the ISO CD and had the exact the same problems. It didnt get it to bypass the logon, is there anything else I have to do?
Hi, Thanks man
I tried it on vista it works and i tried it on xp it doesnt work it says no kernel image or something after i boot from usb
i am having some prob wt it …. everything is workin fine untill the konboot screen comes ….. aftr that nothing happens it just gets struck at that screen….help me
