Fix Windows Live Messenger Not Remembering ID and Password

Windows Live Messenger is one of the most popular instant messenger today. Ever since the latest Windows Live Messenger 2009 is out, there has always been problems such as the webcam not working, unable to sign in and even small annoying problems such as the Remember me and Remember my password option not working. If you have personal laptop that is only used by you, surely you would like to have the convenience of just clicking a button to automatically sign in to Messenger instead of manually typing the password every time you want to sign in.
When you enter your Windows Live ID and password, then checked both Remember Me and Remember My Password option, it will continue working but once you restart your computer and launch Windows Live Messenger, you will see that your ID and password is not saved! Thanks to Jonathan Kay, he found out that Windows Live Messenger not able to remember a user’s Live ID is caused of Yahoo! Toolbar installer which messes up your Windows user profile registry. Unfortunately uninstalling the Yahoo! Toolbar will not fix the problem.
Again thanks to Jonathan, he created a simple tool called Make Messenger Remember to solve Messenger forgetting your username and password problem. All you need to do is download, run it and click the Fix button. Make Messenger Remember will automatically restart Windows after completing its work, so be sure to close and save any data prior to beginning the process. After restart, run Windows Live Messenger and see if your Live ID and hotmail is saved. If not, simply enter again and save it. The next time you restart your computer the login information should be there.
If you get the error “The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135). Click OK to terminate the application.” when running Make Messenger Remember, that means you don’t have .NET Framework 2.0 installed on your computer. Go here to download and install .NET Framework.

When certain applications are installed, it sets the following registry value:
[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-796845957-926492609-725345543-1003\Soft*ware\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ex plorer\User Shell Folders]
AppData = %AppData%
The problem here is AppData should actually be the following
AppData = %USERPROFILE%\Application Data
So when MSN or other apps that use that registry key go to save their data it gets lost.
So the solution is simple, run regedit and go to
[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-796845957-926492609-725345543-1003\Soft*ware\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ex plorer\User Shell Folders]
and set the value AppData to a data value of %USERPROFILE%\Application Data

hi guys, my registry entry was fine, but i still faced problems in some sites.
just try and check the date of your windows system. If it is an earlier date, set it to the current date, and hopefully things will be solved.

I recently did a clean install on my laptop cause I couldn’t get XP Repair to fix my old drive, (something about missing key in activity activation context when I click on anything installed by XP). And after 2 weeks of copying, installing, updating, and all the other GLORIOUS crap involved in getting back to where I had my laptop, I have this stupid “Remember me” Issue again.
I tried the whole Adam’s Tweak to the Registry, and it locked out some of my programs. I couldn’t get SmartDefrag to work or Eusing Registry cleaner to work. Some message about has to be run from an admin account, but I only have the one admin account.
And I’m avoiding the whole “create another account” thing since I have some things installed that only install to the one account, and would have to deal with another 3 days of re-installing and tweaking it to where I want it. If I use the Remember me Program, will it mess up anything I haven’t reset yet? (mozilla and opera)

This program not only fixed my Windows Live issues, but ALL log-in problems that I have had with IE with not remembering the log-in information!!! I wish MS could know about this fix, because it is a gem! Thank you!
