I’ve never really done any research on which is the best audio or video convertor which can extract audio from a video file. If you do a search in Google, you’ll definitely find a lot of “convertor” software and most of them are shareware that cost money. Don’t be even surprised if some of them are actually from the same company and they re-branded their software to get more exposure and sales. I know about this because most of the spam in forum is about audio convertor software.
Look no further because here are 2 free media convertors which I’ve been using all along and it supports a lot of audio and video formats.
My first choice is Format Factory.

It is a multifunctional media converter that supports converting all popular video, audio, picture formats to others. To extract audio from a video, simply load the video file and then select “All to MP3″. Other than converting audio and video formats, it can also repair damaged video and audio file, reduce Multimedia file size, watermarking videos and images, rips DVD and the program interface supports up to 50 languages. Most importantly, this program is totally free and you can’t find any spyware or nag screens bugging you to donate. I also recently used this to convert a .MP4 movie to .AVI to play on my WDTV.

My second choice is xrecode II.

It is converter and audio-grabber which allows you to convert many audio formats but it cannot convert video formats. Other than that, xrecode II supports parallel conversion by utilizing power of multi-core CPUs, normalizing audio files so that every mp3 plays at the same volume, able to combine multiple files into one large audio file, extracting audio from flv, avi, mov etc. video files (multiple audio streams are supported). Although it is a shareware that cost $15, it is fully functional with only a nag screen being displayed on startup.

This may also be of use, as I’ve been using the free version to extract audio from .flv files:

Rarely, it may not open a file and I then use either Format Factory, as per. the article or MediaCoder (audio edition):

This is another very comprehensive free converter.
don’t you just use a demuxer?
thanks ray!
hi Raymond. do u mind testing Handbrake DVD ripping software? It can do *very high* qulity encoding but technically I think it’s harmful or something… cuz it eats up all my CPUs to 99%.
Sorry to ask you for this. I hope you don’t mind posting about 100% CPU or similar. hope u reply.
with respect,
benji
You can also use winamp with the waveout plugin.
Format Factory is great, you can even run it without installing once you extract it ^_^
Thanks for sharing!
Have a look at http://www.any-video-converter.com/products/for_video_free/
Hey Ray,
I myself have looked into A LOT of audio extracters and converters, and I found a really great one, which is also free.
Its called mediaCoder, it can extract audio from video’s, can extract just video from video’s. It also takes every audio and video format that I have ever seen plus more. It is a bit complex for the average computer user, but can easily be figured with a tiny bit of help.
Look into it, because it might hit one of your top converters.
Oh yea, I forgot to mention with MediaCoder, is that it has extreme quality when converting. You can transcode a 2GB movie into 500MB and you wont notice the slightest difference in quality between them, no advertising anywhere… which the ones that do are really irritating.

I Extract audio from avi with Virtualdub
Thank Ray
MediaCoder is a nice software but it’s complicated to use. There are a couple of others like SUPER and Internet Video Converter.
Best option is to use a demuxer and then cutting off the required portion of the audio instead of using converters.
Thanx Raymond.
I’ve also posted a way to make an MP3 from an FLV using a program made in .NET I found while browsing the internet.

You can also download ffmpeg for windows (or it should come with Linux by default) and use command line
ffmpeg -i input_file.flv -ab 128 output_file.mp3
Maybe you could fine a way to turn that into a context menu option? I’ve tried a batch file, but am not sure how to set the output as same as the input directory.
Thank you Raymond,
I have been regularly reading your Blog since i have subscribed to it few weeks ago, i came to know about it from one of my friends. Since then it has improved my computer knowledge very much. Thanks once again.
FLV to AVI MPEG WMV 3GP MP4 iPod Converter
also a great software for file coverting, it has more file formats than appear in the name, i have been using this program for a few months now.
@pceasies:
You could try this in a batch file:
ffmpeg -i %1 -ab 128 %1.mp3
lnwalker
anyway.. HandBrake rocks! you guys should try if you haven’t.
