Then I tried installing the latest version of Nero 9 and it worked flawlessly. After testing a few more disc burning software, I now realized that NOT ALL CD burning software can support all CD/DVD writers.
The software below couldn’t detect my drive as a writer.
DeepBurner v1.9.0.228 MagicISO v5.5.0281 UltraISO Premium v9.3.6.2750 CDBurnerXP Portable v4.2.3.1110 BurnCDCC v2.00a DeepBurner v1.9.0.228
I was very surprised and disappointed at the same time to know that the popular MagicISO and UltraISO didn’t support the DVD writer on my Dell computer. You might have heard of CDBurnerXP and DeepBurner before because they are free but they too don’t work on my drive. BurnCDCC not able to work is acceptable because it is outdated (last update was 4 years ago).
Other than Nero that worked on my computer, here are 3 portable disc burning software that I recommend to use. There are a lot of disc burning software, tons of them but unfortunately not many that are portable and free at the same time. I prefer portable tools so that the software doesn’t need to drop files on other locations and also add extra entries to the registry.
1. StarBurn

- StarBurn is very impressive because it has tons of features such as burning data, audio and video. Other than that, it can build ISO images, grab audio CD and make them into MP3, compress WAV to MP3. There are 2 versions of StarBurn, free and paid. The only difference are you don’t get to record to remote CD/DVD/Blu-Ray/HD-DVD burner over TCP/IP and no support.

2. CDRTFE (cdrtools Frontend)

- CDRTFE is a frontend for the cdrtools (cdrecord, mkisofs, readcd, cdda2wav), Mode2CDMaker and VCDImager. This is one my favorite because both cdrtools and frontend are actively being developed, so the chances of supporting a lot of disc writers are pretty high.

3. InfraRecorder

- This tool is not being actively developed but it worked on my dvd writer. It can create custom data, audio and mixed-mode projects, supports recording to dual-layer DVDs, erase rewritable discs using four different methods, record disc images, and etc.
[ Download InfraRecorder ]
All this 3 software are free and portable which means they can all go into my USB flash drive. Very useful to test if its a drive, software, or “user problem” when my customer complains that they cannot write a disc or the disc couldn’t read after burning. Do let me know if I missed any “Free & Portable” disc burning software…

Please define actively developed? I notice you say cdrtfe is actively developed yet when I checked the last update was Feb 2009. Yet you say InfraRecorder is not actively developed yet it’s last update was in August of 2009. I like the review, but it seems the facts may be a bit mixed up.
Also, I like CDBurnerXP except it is now developed in .NET which means it could never truly be portable at least for now. It is however actively developed.
Another tool I came across lately is AstroBurn at http://www.astroburn.com/ I can not tell if it is portable though. This is from the same makers of Daemon Tools.
And lastly a bunch of burning tool and related are on Dirk Paehl’s web site at http://dpaehl.dd6338.kasserver.com/cdr/ These also look useful. Thanks for the excellent review.
I have used deepburner and portable with my cd/dvd burner without problems. This is a

I now use ashampoo burning 2010 but just because I got a free promo :)
thz .. raymond .. good work..
StarBurn:
People say:
1. Adds skywebsearch toolbar to FireFox and IE browsers.
2. Changes homepage on FireFox and IE to http://www.skywebsearch.com
3. Changes browser startup settings to “Show my home page” (that is, its changed if you have it set to load all tabs and windows from previous session)
@ NigNag,
LOL, Starbutrn only installs what u tell it to. No way its going to give you those things if u dont want. Who do u refer to for software reviews?
There is something in this world called custom install. Tell those people to always install using that option and they wont have adware at least through genuine softwares.
Please read my above reply to ameer who was complaining of something similar.

here’s the new portable version of cdburnerXP. version 4.2.7.1893.. http://cdburnerxp-portable.en.softonic.com/download
I custom installed. Unchecked the crap so got none of that. Maybe either custom install option was missing earlier or people dont look when they install. That’s why the warning.
Well, Dell hardware can be obnoxious and sometimes incompatible with 3rd-party hardware and software. Perhaps the problem lies there.
One thing I noticed is NERO will burn a coaster, unless I close KIS (Kaspersky) first.
e.g.
cd C:\Program Files\Kaspersky Lab\Kaspersky Internet Security 2009
avp.com exit /password=password
exit
I think it works also if you simply “Pause Protection” -IIRC sorry about that I gave the idea it has to stop above.
Thanks Ray…
Thanks, I really impressed by Starburn :D
I stopped using Nero instead turn to ImgBurn, very nice software not bloated at all.
I however still used old Nero Cd DVD Speed v4.7.7.16 to check my burned dvds.
InfraRecorder still seems to be under development. Chrisitan has made several commits, recently – including this one from 27 February 2010:

Imageburn 2.5 failed me on one occasion.. Tried the same burning operation with Ashampoo Burning Studio and the burn completed smoothly and successfully…
AstroBurn Lite (http://www.astroburn.com/) is a free tool that enables you to burn CD/DVD images with ease.
There are no problems to do with this application burning and writing discs quickly and conveniently
Infrarecorder combined with NEC 4550 burner toasted every CD-R (10+) and DVD (3x) even after reburning.
Also I’m used to use Nero 6, but the only down side is that I also prefer portable apps.
So will try StarBurn!
