It gets stuck at a particular update and stays that way for quite a while. I've tried to restart the program but it still manages to get itself stuck there. Can anyone guide me?

I can’t seem to finish downloading. It gets stuck at a particular update and stays that way for quite a while. To solve this problem, you need to manually visit Windows Update or Microsoft Update site, download and install at least one security update or Service Pack, and it will solve the problem. If you don't want to waste anymore time in downloading and installing hundreds of megabytes of windows updates, you can use Offline Windows Update. Especially useful if you have more than just one of the Windows OS as well as the different versions of OFfice to cater for as it only downloads one copy of files that are common across different OSs and Offices saving a lot of bandwidth. I also like that once you have made an initial 'master' download it only copies new files on subsequent down loads, again saving a lot of bandwidth. All in all, a very neat and useful tool.

I second your recommendation of c’t since a friend on a forum pointed me to it a couple of months ago.
