Once I’ve remotely seen a computer running a few antivirus installed together with the real time protection enabled via teamviewer. You may think that it’s impossible because normally the antivirus setup installer will check for any installed antivirus before allowing you to proceed with the installation. It is in fact possible if you know where the setup installer checks and temporarily remove the data to trick the installer. However, installing multiple antivirus is never good because of conflict and also slow down. If you haven’t noticed, those antivirus with multiple engines such as Coranti is one of the slowest in performance.
However with AVERT, you can have up to 8 antivirus engines (Asquared, ClamWin, Vba32, Trend Micro, VIPRE, Sophos, Panda and Avira) and they won’t even slow down your computer at all. That is because they are on-demand scanners used to perform full scan and doesn’t provide real time protection.
AVERT is very different because the file is only 3.4MB in size. Antivirus engines and definitions are not included by default, so you get to choose which engine you’d like to download and use, saving you a lot of time from downloading an antivirus engine that you don’t want to use. Other than that, AVERT also uses CCleaner to clean different temp file directories and files automatically to help save space and also to eliminate potential malware risk. It also includes 3 other tools to backup registry, reset windows HOSTS file and reset Windows proxy to resolve potential internet issues.

Although AVERT looks simply but it takes a little time to get familiar with it. When you run AVERT.exe, the first thing you need to do is to select which antivirus out of the 8 that you would like to download. Click on the Tools and Settings button which is located at the bottom left, and then click on Install Tool. VIPRE is already included by default and if you want the remaining 7 to be downloaded, simply enable the checkbox and click the Download button. AVERT then uses wget to automate the downloading of all 8 antivirus engines which is about 300MB.
Once you’ve finished downloading the antivirus engines, go back to the main window and click on Scan. There are 4 scan configurations which is Complete Scans, Balanced Scans, Quick Scans and Custom Scans.
Complete scans utilize all scanners and maximizes their options to provide the most thorough cleaning of malware. This option will take the longest time to complete, but will give you the best results.
Balanced scans utilizes a core scanner and other partial scanners to provide a thorough scanning, but is meant to be quicker than ‘Complete Scans’. This configuration is the default.
Quick scans utilizes partial scanners to provide a simple overview of potential malware, but isn’t meant for a good cleaning. Use this option only if you want it to be fast.
Custom scans allows you to select which antivirus engine to use and also the scanning configuration. You can also specify if you want to attempt to update the signatures first before scanning.
When you click on the Run Scans button, 7zip will be used to extract the downloaded antivirus engines and then auto downloads the latest virus definition signature file. One annoying feature is every time you want to run a scan, you will have to spend some time in downloading the huge signature file, for example the Emsisoft Commandline Scanner signature is currently at 75MB in size.
Secondly, all 8 antivirus engines uses their command line tool to perform the scan and I expect that removing detected malware will not be as advanced as the full version antivirus software. For example, if you have a virus that protects its own process by blue screening the computer whenever it is forcefully terminated, then the malware will not be removed. AVERT would be better to have an option just to scan and log without the removal feature.
Thirdly, you cannot scan a custom folder. It has to be either full scan or don’t use it at all. Finally, downloading the latest Panda virus signature file requires login credentials and using Avira command line scanner requires license by placing HBEDV.KEY file in \Scanners\AviraAntivir\. AVERT is still very new and there are rooms for improvement. They’ve also started implementing usage of installed antivirus such as AVG to run the scan from AVERT.

Thanks Ernest. You may want to add some of this information to your FAQ. I like the concept and appreciate your work, however… I am reluctant to try a program that may delete important files. I can’t afford a false positive. Remember the McAfee fiasco? I like to have the option to scan without taking “automatic” action. I like the fact that you said you are working on that option. When it is implemented I would like to give it a try.
thx for the share ray
also nie to know so much abt avert from Ernest :)
Hey everyone. I’m the developer of AVERT. AVER is a free application I made on my free time. I appreciate all of the concerns and suggestions. I’m still working on AVERT and will try to make it as awesome as I possibly can. With that said, I’d also like to answer a few questions that some of you have brought up.
1. “Useful post, Raymond. Is there also an option to quarantine suspicious files, rather than removing them?”
Kind of. AVERT is currently defaulted to remove on some scanners and quarantine on others. I’m working on a method to just quarantine and then exclude chosen files from removal, but that might be some time from now.
2. “How about the antivirus signatures? How often are they updated, and how are they updated? Is it a root update (right from the source), or is it a cloud update?”
At the moment, signatures are updated each time you run AVERT, so you are always going to have the latest definitions. You do have the option, in the Options window, to uncheck updates. A2, ClamWin, and Vba32 are updated through their command line apps and the other scanners are updated with their URLs directly from the manufacturer. You can view and change those URLs in the signatures window: p1cture.me/images/71094186884950281874.jpg. In an ideal world, each manufacturer’s URLs would never change, but that’s not the always the case. When AVERT updates signatures, it pulls the URLs from the signatures.xml file that is configured through the previously mentioned window. If a manufacturer changes their URL, you can save that info there and AVERT will update the signatures. This is not perfect, but is the only realistic way I could think of when updating signatures. I originally hard coded the URLs, but that turned out to be a bad idea, for the reasons stated above. In the future, I will add an option to download signatures outside of the automation process, just in case you don’t have access to the internet.
3. “8 antiviruses….
One is more than enough..
Add to it the “smarts” and a fair dose of wisdom and you won”t get infected.
Condor”
One is not enough for an already infected system. AVERT utilizes portable apps and in itself is mostly portable. It is not meant to replace an antivirus application. Once a machine is infected, it can take even an experienced technician a bunch of time to remove it and one app isn’t as good as several. Besides, it matters not how much “smarts” or wisdom someone has. There’s always the possibility of receiving an infection in the most honest of situations. Did you know that some of those most infected websites of 2009 that were discovered by Norton were eBook, news, finances, and racing websites? All legitimate and honest material, but that doesn’t stop those viruses from infecting your machine just because they aren’t porn websites or the like.
4. “But why do I need to download VIPRE each time I scan? Because its taking to long, and I don’t think it necessary. Maybe just checking new content! and save it in the portable file!”
VIPRE does not release their signatures as a stand-alone download. Instead, they package the newest signatures with the scanner and all. So unless you want old signatures, VIPRE has to download anew, each time. There might be a slim way of checking their website first, but isn’t feasible at this time.
5. “Is there an option to just scan with no removal? I ask because I don’t want a good file (false positive) removed. Also how is this free? Vipre and others are pay programs correct? Nice post. I am curious. Thanks.”
Not at the moment, but I understand the need for that. So I am working on it. Also, AVERT is free because all of the scanners are free. VIPRE and the others offer paid for versions, but all of the scanners used here are free.
If there are any questions, please email me at avertsoftware at gmail dot com. Also, please check out my FAQ and How-To section on my website: avertsoftware.com/
Thanks

hi.
please send me license code iobit 360.
thanks.
Thanks Ray
I was looking for something like that, but I hope they do more work on this tool
thanks Raymond will give it a try
hitman pro 3.5.7 build 116 also
nice bit of software kind of similar to hitman pro but options of quick or thorough scans
Nice software Raymond
But why do I need to download VIPRE each time I scan? Because its taking to long, and I don’t think it necessary. Maybe just checking new content! and save it in the portable file!
thanks

Raymond,
Can you please tell me How much memory it utilize? Does it make system slow?
Thank you Mr. Raymond!!!
Nice finding for sharing with all of us.
Best regards for you and to all co-members in your Blog.
Jose Martinez.
This sounds interesting thanks Ray!
Nice Raymond, I have Kasper (KIS) as realtime, with scanners Malwarebytes, and antivir (had to jump through a couple service hoops with antivir updates) but they’re all living happily together. I wanted to add more but just like you said, they whine about previous installs. For example I wanted to add the f-prot scanner (Used to use it back in the BBS days.)
This is a great tool Raymond!! Thanks.
Interesting, but all their definitions suck except Vipre’s, and maybe a few more… :)
Very nice tool !!
Thx.

Thanx for the info Raymond it’s worth to try that combination of Av. I by my self have Norton 2011 installed with real time protection,Comodo IS premium with disabled av.(scaning on demand) I have portable emsisoft security kit plus superantispyware, malwarebytes and spybotsearch… scaning on demand.
Thanks Ray…..
Thanks for the share Raymond. Seems to be a helpful tool.
Having VIPRE, Panda and Avira sound good for antivirus engines, but I’m not too sure about having vba32(I haven’t used it, so I don’t know how good it is), Asquared(would be a pain considering the high number of false positives), and Trend Micro(Bad detection rate in my experience).
I would give it a try if it came with Kaspersky’s and NOD32′s antivirus engine, and some real time protection would also be nice.
Really great article and pretty nice piece of software. Never known that such a program exist except GDATA but is bloated as hell and slow down all my computers. Thanks again.
