AVG 7.5 Free to Retire This Month and AVG 8 is Extremely Slow

When AVG FREE 8 was released, I was really excited to check it out because they’ve combined spyware protection into to their antivirus software. However I immediately felt that it was slowing my computer after installing it. I’ve installed AVG FREE 8 on a clean Windows XP SP3 and it already took up 38MB of memory on idle. When I launch a full scan, the AVG 8 memory usage can go up to 80MB.

There were people complaining that AVG 8 takes slightly longer to do a complete scan compared to v7.5. I believe that is because the latest AVG 8 scans for spywares as well. There are also people who reports that AVG 8 slows down whole system, causing crashes and also web browsing is way slower because of LinkScanner.

Since AVG FREE 8 is quite problematic for many users, why not just uninstall AVG 8 and use AVG 7.5? Here’s a memory usage comparison between AVG 8 and AVG 7.5.

AVG FREE 7.5
avgamsvr.exe (AVG Alert Manager) 368K
avgupsvc.exe (AVG Update Service) 496K
avgemc.exe (AVG E-Mail Scanner) 1040K
avgcc.exe (AVG Control Center) 300K
Total Memory Usage: 2204K

AVG FREE 8
avgtray.exe (AVG Tray Monitor) 6116K
avgemc.exe (AVG E-Mail Scanner) 460K
avgwdsvc.exe (AVG Watchdog Service) 1204K
avgrsx.exe (AVG Resident Shield Service) 30464K
Total Memory Usage: 38244K

I am shocked to see that AVG 7.5 took only 2204K (2.2MB) memory on idle compared to AVG 8 which takes up 38244K (38MB). In AVG 8, the process that took most of the memory usage is avgrsx.exe (AVG Resident Shield Service) with 30084K out of 38244K. I’ve personally seen avgrsx.exe takes up 100mb of memory on a friend’s laptop. Different computer with different software installed and running in background can cause the memory usage to go up.

I’ve tried tweaking AVG 8 configuration by disabling nearly everything and only left the real-time antivirus & antispyware scanning enabled but the memory usage for AVG Resident Shield Service will not go down. Disabling the AVG LinkScanner fixes the slow website loading problem through.

If you think that using AVG 7.5 is the solution, then you’ll have to consider this. Michael from AVG Team announced in AVG forum that support for AVG 7.5 Free Edition is planned to end on 31st August 2008 which means only virus definition updates will continue until the end date. No more virus updates are planned for after that date. As for “program” updates, they’ve already no longer provide any update fixes. For those that are using AVG 7.5 Paid version, it will be supported until 31/12/08. I am not sure how true it is because AVG has previously mentioned that updates for your current AVG Free will not be available after May 31st 2008. AVG 7.5 is being replaced by AVG 8.0 and you will have to upgrade to stay safe. Then it was extended until June 25th 2008 and now August 31st 2008.

updates for your current AVG Free will not be available after June 25th 2008. AVG 7.5 is being replaced by AVG 8.0 and you will have to upgrade to stay safe.

Many people used to like AVG because it is free, lightweight and easy on resources. Now that the latest AVG 8 is an elephantware and AVG 7.5 is set to retire end of this month, I believe many people has and will say goodbye to AVG and use other alternatives such as Avira AntiVir Personal 8 which only uses 10072K memory on idle. Although the memory usage cannot be compared to AVG 7.5, but Avira is still one of the lightest free antivirus with very good known and unknown virus detection.

So if you’re faced with this dilemma, give Avira AntiVir Personal 8 a try and I am sure you’ll like it better than AVG FREE 8. Before installing Avira, make sure you uninstall AVG first to avoid any conflicts. I am sure AVG Technologies realize that their latest AVG 8 is a bloatware and hopefully their next major release will be lighter and uses less memory.

Good post, I reported on AVG 8 Free a while back and didn’t pick up on the differences to 7.5 in terms of resource and load. On my own PC’s and laptops I haven’t noticed a significant performance hit and they are varied in their CPU power and memory configurations with a couple of them over 4 years old. However the old one mainly run background tasks virtually acting as servers. I don’t have scan set to automatic but rely on “realtime” scanning.

yup, it’s bloatware indeed, we even have the paid version. Ain’t even effective with malwares. We have to use a-squared for spywares and malwares. And it seems that the software isn’t perfected yet. We kinda experience some “error” when updating. Seems that I’m losing faith with avg

    • Barney

Excelent post.I will give Avira a try then, I’m sick of updating AVG7.5 every two days :\
      Thank you Ray ;)

since 2003, avg of grisoft was good, but since more than six months using avira free, it is excellent. avg is very good as regards the detection of mail spam.

Thx for the info Raymond! i am using AVG 8 Internet Security now: AVG 8 G.D.E (Genuine Demonoid Edition) lol Thx

    • praveen

Avira free version is good, but it has got this nagging pop-up which jumps into your workspace everytime the program updates. Ok, this being a free product a mere pop-up shouldn’t be much of a problem to many users.

    • clyde

I installed the Avg8 freebie on my son’s computer a while ago and tweaked it up and it runs fine. The Linkscanner did slow it down quite a bit.I think I even liked it!

    • Prashanth

I agree. The process “avgrsx.exe” was often making Windows hang when I was using AVG 8. I am more concerned about false positives. It marks all clean keygens & all my custom made pranks as infected.

    • brayden

      @Prashanth
Yer it said my Warcraft keygen was a virus, but it’s backed up on a disc so it should be all right, and it said the main application for GTA San Andreas was a virus. Maybe they have some cracked and keygen detecter.

5 years ago: avira antivir free (rejected cause of low level of virus detection and disgasting pop-up)

1 year ago: avg free (rejected cause of v.8)

now: moon secure antivirus based on clamav engine

    • http://www.raymond.cc/ Raymond

Honestly, I’d never put my money on Moon Secure AV. Firstly it uses ClamAV and it AV tests, it ranked pretty low. The latest Moon Secure AV beta also takes up a lot of memory.

Interesting that you bring this up in a topic. I loved the old free AVG but hated the new version. It never ceases to amaze me when they have a good product and then update it, bloat it, and ruin it. I’m using Avira and it works great…

Avast is very good. And free for home use.
It now has anti-spyware and anti-rootkit as well.

    • jim

By the way Raymond do you use the task manager to find out the ram usage or are you using any software to find it.

Also whats the best between Avast home edition and Avira Free edition?

    • gt

memory occupation is not the worst of avg 8.0

try to enter a folder with a lot and big of executable files… you will see icons appears very very very slowly

      I switched to avira

    • http://www.foxvalleycomputerservices.com Steve Mills

After suggesting AVG for a long time, this last version caused me to switch. On most computers I use Avira, but I’m beginning to like RAV a lot!

AVG 8 hasn’t caused any problems for me, but Comodo Firewall’s Defense+ brought my vista reliability down to 2 before I caught on that it was causing 99% of my software crashes and hangs.

    • http://www.releaselive.com/ Ibrahim Rabbani

AVG is a virus in itself >_> so is kaspersky they take up too much of your pc’s memory.. which is frustrating so you have to disable them for most of your pc-time.. :\ so its useless

    • CibehGuaiLAN

AVG is a good anti-virus. just hopes it don\’t dies out. Hopefully just like you say it wouldn\’t be a bloatware the next time round. And probably the detecting of so many \”fake\” viruses because they are hacktools and sometimes detected as hacktool. AVG should really do something to allow users to customise and allow those stuff which in fact do not harm the computer.

    • ghost

      avira avira avira :)

    • http://omi.net.bd Omi Azad

But why Windows\’ Built-In Windows Defender sux?

    • inHeaven

      what about comodo antivirus ?
      http://antivirus.comodo.com/
and they announced version 3 coming soon

    • John

      Avira free is the best!!!!!!!!
      You can disable nag:
      http://www.elitekiller.com/files/disable_antivir_nag.htm

    • John

And aviras detection is greater than avg free or avast free.
I can also recommend superantispyware free for spyware, adware…

Is your comment box a part of the wordpress pkg. or is there a site that I can copy the code from?

It seems like you know a lot about things like this.

    • clyde

Thanks for that link John.I was looking for a way to do this!

      Eric:
“AVG 8 hasn’t caused any problems for me, but Comodo Firewall’s Defense+ brought my vista reliability down to 2 before I caught on that it was causing 99% of my software crashes and hangs.”

      - so what’s causing it? AVG or Comodo Firewall Defense+? cause i’m using both security apps but experiencing problems as well. i’m guessing its AVG, so il switch to Avira for now till they can fix their bloating program. as for Comodo, i like the extra security with advanced manipulation, i just hope it is not the one you’re mentioning that cause crashes to your system.

    • Alan

You’ve done it again. Another brilliant story with the exact detail I wanted without going over board about it. Well done Raymond!! For computer queries, I really don’t need to go anywhere else. Thanks.

    • no1

Avira s*cks for me from today, because for avira that code
is virus, and popup virus message at every page which have frameborder=0. stupid imo

    • jjstccean

what is the latest take on AVG version 8. Does it still slow pc’s down – or is there an improvement in memory managing?
