I have to admit that although I know the importance of defragmenting my hard drive to keep my hard disk running at peak performance but I rarely do it. I am just lazy. PERIOD. If you do a search on this blog, you’ll find that the only article I’ve written about disk defragmentation is “Defraggler“. It is more like a file defragmenter rather than disk defragmenter. Well ,everyone should defrag their hard drive once in a while especially for people like me who downloads a lot of stuff from the Internet and moving files around. By doing this, your programs and files launches faster because your hard drive takes lesser time to seek the file fragments and it puts less stress on your hard drive as well.

Now the question is which would probably be one of the best disk defragmenter software since there are so many free and commercial disk defragmenter tools to use? Just few days ago I noticed that a disk defragmenter software called IObit SmartDefrag has released version 1 final. I did a little research and found that SmartDefrag has been in BETA test for 2 years and it is finally out of beta!

The developers of SmartDefrag has done a comparison between a few disk defragmenter such as Defraggler, JKDefrag, Auslogics Disk Defrag, Diskeeper Professional, PerfectDisk Professional. SmartDefrag actually provides features other free defragmeters cannot offer, highest disk performance and better fragments prevention.

SmartDefrag helps defragment your hard drive most efficiently. Smart Defrag not only defragments computer deeply but optimizes disk performance. With “Install it and forget it” feature, Smart Defrag works automatically and quietly in the background on your PC, keeping your hard disk running at its speediest. Slow down, freeze-ups and crashes will be a thing of the past. Smart Defrag is 100% free for home, organization, and business.

SmartDefrag Key Benefits

Extremely Easy to Use
Install it and forget it. This powerful, free defragmenter works continuously, automatically and quietly in the background on your PC. Its intuitive interface makes Smart Defrag the ideal utility for complete computer dummies.

Exceptionally Efficient Defragmentation
Smart Defrag has the world’s fastest defragmenting engine. It’s been specially designed for modern, large hard drives, so it eliminates long waiting times.

Optimize Disk Performance
Smart Defrag doesn’t just use simple defragmentation. It also streamlines your file system, places the frequently used files and directories into the fastest area of the disk, enabling your computer to run at top speed with the most stability.

Always-on to Work Automatically
Smart Defrag works automatically and quietly in the background, so it continually and constantly keeps your computer fragment-free.

Data Safe and Reliability Guaranteed
Smart Defrag uses the commercial-level standard to move data and does not damage any file in your disk. Besides, unlike other “Automated” Defragmenters, Smart Defrag does NOT constantly perform analysis and defragment, which does damage your hard drive and shorten its life. Smart Defrag has a “Safe Intelligence” technology that can assure the health of your disk by deciding When and How to start defragmentation.

Free Defragmenter Forever
Smart Defrag is 100% freeware. You can download it and update absolutely free –– it won’t cost you a penny.

What I like about SmartDefrag is the interface is very clean and straight forward, small in size, rather fast in defragmenting, has smart features such as auto defrag, SmartSilent technology, scheduler, stop defrag while using battery and etc. Definitely worth using!

Hahaha, I`m just like you, very lazy to defrag my disks, despite that I REALLY need to do it. Downloading now…

      PS: It works on Vista?

    • Ehsan

Thanks Ray. Looking for such an efficient tool.

    • praveen

Interesting read Raymond.I had Ultimate Defrag and didn’t like it at all.The only one i’m using is the one with Tuneup Utilities 2008.

    • aran

      thanks raymond!

    • philips14c

I use Tuneup Utilities! This nice little application automatically scans my PC for registry/fragmentation problems and repairs them in the background once a week! No need for user intervention at all! :)

    • Mark

Perfect – just what I need..! Windows disk Defragmenter is really slow at defraging stuff..

      Thanks Raymond..!!

    • Thomas T

I am using PerfectDisk, hmm might give Smart Defrag a try…

    • Solaris

      Nice Comparison, Raymond.

BTW, Why did you stop watermarking your images?

    • SR

      Thanks Raymond

but have you seen Ultimate Defrag 2008 by Disktrix?

I do not like the inability to opt out of the Yahoo toolbar, so I canceled my installation of this program and won’t be using it.

    • DruDragon

@ post 21, you can opt out of the Yahoo Toolbar. I think this is a really cool program, not resource intensive either. I’m currently using Diskeeper 2008 Pro.

    • Cathy

you CAN opt out of the Yahoo toolbar.
just uncheck the “I Agree” box.

    • SR

loloking yup that is the site

      http://www.disktrix.com/UDIntroduction.htm

and that is the information page for ultimate defrag 2008

The author of Smart Defrag is Carwin Chen (clcarwin AT gmail.com), a college student, joining IObit on 2006. All donation to Smart Defrag will be used as the tuition to finish his college education.

    • pete

linda just untick the two boxs to opt out of yahoo toolbar and search engine

    • fsr

      I’m not convinced.

If they did a HD performance comparison (not very transparent, what settings were used ?), why not compare with the others in the defrag prevention ? Those features free defraggers cannot offer, are not needed anyway, and Jk can also be automated. Interface IMHO looks bad, only half-cooked.

This sort of tests can only be done by independent testers.

Contig v1.54 By Mark Russinovich (the same guy that busted Sony for using the rootkits back in ’04), hosted on microsoft’s site.

theres also a nice gui for Contig by the name of Power Defragmenter 3.0.

Just google Contig & power defragmenter to find them. Been using them both for a couple of years.

    • Joseph

Hey folks… I\\\’ve been using iobit products for years and never had to download anything but the program. It is a great defragger. It also updated regularly and always free.

    • Mitch

Oh wow, the commercial product and the freeware run at the same speeds! How amazing!

Seriously, this entire blog is fradulent and disreputable as they get. Two days ago this man was endorsing the scam website filesavr and before that, giving ways to download Microsoft cracks.

Hmm, this just seems like another big pile of sponsored bullshit dropped on us.

    • http://www.raymond.cc/ Raymond

@Linda: Yahoo toolbar CAN be opt out from installing.

@Mitch: The test is done by people from IObit, not ME. Weird, I wonder how can you call my site a fraud when you are not charged a single cent for what you’re reading here and not being forced to install what I personally like? I don’t think I need to reason out with you any further because it’s pointless and you’re unreasonable.

serious question – how does this compare to the “Tuneup Utilities 2008 – Defragmenter”.

    • http://www.moviegalaxy.org TechGuyBoy

Thanks Raymond, I got to say that this IS one of the best Disk Defragmenter, it really speed up my Hard Drive/PC, Thanks.

    • deepak

thnx but L stick to ashampoo defrag

    • juhani

Smart? defrag. I had to re-install Office and some other software. At least, do NOT let it run in the background.

    • http://www.safeatlastonline.com Mitch Dominguez

WOW, this little son of a gun is real fast. Defraged and optimized my Dell with Vista Home Premium Edition 32 bit in 43 minutes as compared to the 2 hours of the built in Microsoft defrager. I defrag once a week as it is my business computer and I do a lot of moving around of musical files.
      Thank You Señor Raymond,
      Mitch Dominguez
P.S. I am NOT the “Mitch” criticizing you. I think your work is first rate..

    • George Paul

      Raymond! Ignore the nasty comments
Sharing knowledge is always good. Your blogs are helpful to all interested in becoming a master in computer science at least in the case of OS.

    • KyEap

Thx guy , I’m uninstalled defraggler and now try using this program that u recommended :D

    • hamid.yabani

      Thanks a lot, Raymond!

I have used Jkdefrag for year.

The comparison in practice is needed but it looks Smartdefrag is a strong competitor.

    • NinjaRicer

Seems nice to use this. Must…try…

    • jeff parker

      thanks raymond!

    • capo

      I’ll try it.
At the moment, I have O&O Defrag and I’m very happy with it.

    • Nick

Previously on this site Raymond showed you how to get Ashampoo magicla defragger for free. It’s not as extensive program as this, but it’s basically the “auto-defrag” option all on itself. What’s so great about it is that it works only when you’re not doing something on your computer. For example when you go to the bathroom, talk on the phone, stop to think, and then it ends as soon as you start working again. You will never feel it’s there! I’ve been using it for about 6 months now, never done a defrag, and my computer is completely “blue” =)

This program did not test so well last year, but maybe changes have been made. For the most complete defragger test list I’ve found on the net, check out Don Edwards’ blog:

      http://donnedwards.openaccess.co.za/2007/06/great-defrag-shootout-all.html

I’m sure Donn will be comparing the new version against the old before too long.

    • CeeJay

I use jkdefrag -a7 to do disk optimization and jkdefrag without options for regular maintenance defragmentation.

I doubt Smart Defrag does better disk optimization , but a impartial comparison is needed.

    • Leland

I had tried this about a year and a half ago when it was still very young and at that point I could not recommend anyone use it. I must say that the appearance of the program has improved greatly. It has the same issue most defragmentors for Windows does, it has to re-analyze to defrag even if you already did the analysis before clicking defrag. It looks good, I am trying it out now. I will report back later this week on the results.

    • Leland

I tested it and it has vastly improved over the beta version I tried about a year and a half ago. It did a reasonable job of defragging my 160GB hard drive leaving very few fragments. Not only that but for the most part it did not fragment my free space in order to due so which is a common complaint. Overall I could see myself using this tool. Speed wise I don’t think it’s any slower that JKDefrag so that is a good thing. If your looking for a free defragger it is worth trying out.

    • Merlin_Magii

      Thanks Raymond.

      - and a special thanks to Ash for the Don Edwards link ……… Gordon Bennett ! (English exclamation of stunned surprise) – that was a REAL eye opener ! Everyone should read it !
