Previously I’ve written a guide on how to add your Hotmail account to Microsoft Outlook. Before doing that, you’ll need to subscribe for the MSN Hotmail Plus which is now known as Windows Live Hotmail Plus. If you are using the FREE basic Windows Live Hotmail account, you’ll only get an error message saying “Access to Hotmail via Outlook and Outlook Express now requires a subscription. Please sign up at http://join.msn.com/general/Email“.

For people who have Microsoft Outlook 2003 or Outlook 2007, Microsoft has released a free utility for Microsoft Outlook called “Microsoft Office Outlook Connector” that allows you to download email from your Windows Live Hotmail to local Microsoft Outlook WITHOUT Windows Live Hotmail Plus subscription.

Please take note that Microsoft Office Outlook Connector only works with Microsoft Outlook 2003 and 2007 only. Earlier version of Microsoft Outlook and also Outlook Express won’t work.


Using Windows Live Hotmail with Microsoft Outlook can be much powerful because it uses Junk Mail filter, Rules Wizard and other features in Outlook. Download, installing and running Microsoft Office Outlook Connector is very easy.

1. Download Microsoft Office Outlook Connector and install.

2. Run Microsoft Outlook and you’ll need to enter your Hotmail email address, password and name that you want to appear in the receiver’s inbox.

3. You’ll notice that on the left pane where all your mail folders are, a new folder with your hotmail email address will appear. Simply click on Send/Receive button to start downloading all your emails from Hotmail to Outlook.

If you have multiple Hotmail account, you can continue adding them to Outlook by going to Outlook Connector from menu bar, and select Add a New Account. It’s so much easier maintaining multiple Hotmail accounts now!
Hotmail POP3 and SMTP

There are also free third party utilities such as HotPOP3 which acts as a proxy between an HTTPMail server (MSN Hotmail) but I’d prefer to use Microsoft utilities on Microsoft products.

      As of yesterday, when Hotmail prompts me to validate my Hotmail account by logging into Hotmail seperate from Outlook, I no longer see the scrambled letters to validate the account. It goes straight to Windows Live Hotmail, but I still cannot send email using Microsoft Outlook Connector. Any ideas?

      Ryan, I just noticed that as well. When I tested it, I was able to download Hotmail to my Microsoft Outlook with Microsoft Outlook Connector installed. I tried using Outlook Express but couldn’t.

      I have followed the steps above and downloaded the Outlook Connector from the Microsoft Update website. When I open Outlook and click on the folder with my Hotmail address and then click Send/Receive it gives me a message that I need a current version of the Connector. This is confusing because I just downloaded it. Any thoughts and is anyone else having this problem?

      I am using Outlook 2003 successfully to send and receive Hotmail. However, it stores your hotmail messages in a new ‘pst’ file.

      Any ideas on how to incorporate Hotmail into your default pst??

      I have installed the software and have done the send receive also successfull. But i am unable to see my inbox. the message displayed on the screen is “unable to display the folder, Microsoft office outlook cannot access the specified folder location”

      I get the same problems with outlook 2007. A Hotmail folder appears but when I click send/receive nothing goes through. I get no error message but the emails dont filter through. I have sent an email as a test and it was received however still cant get my inbox to sync.

      Is it cos my Office 2007 is cracked?

      I just created a hotmail email address, and need it to workw ith outlook; without losing any of my outlook capabilities, i.e. creating subfolders, email intergration with calendar, out of office, etc.

      Using OUtlook Connector appears to turn OUtlook into a web service email, and therefore does not allow some of the features, and it is also a hog…..causing outlook to hang up that causes me to have to control/alt/delete constantly. HELPPPPP

      I receive my hotmail email through outlook 07 which works fine except i want to do 3 things.

      1. keep all emails online as well (I like to keep two copies and online means I can read them when i’m away from my computer)

      2. I’m getting “synchronization log: The following issues occured while synchronizing with the server:

      Folder Collection Sync Key: 0{f17ac852-640e-4720-a162-b330c638f580}89

      Message Collection Sync Key: 0{7f79b0ec-f882-418c-a6d4-153b55e1cf1a}88

      There is an error synchronizing your mail account. Please verify your account has been configured correctly by first accessing your mail on the web.
      Error: 4350. ”

      What does this mean? – if this means that some emails aren’t downloading properly than I am losing mail due.

      3. Can I run rules on the hotmail account. Because I haven’t been able to set them to work (all my other rules work fine, only the ones related to my hotmail account fail)

      Anyway any help on these issue would be great

      Outlook Users BEWARE. Outlook Connector wil totally screw up your email. Since I installed it I can no longer receive email to my Outlook 2003.

      Connector is total GARBAGE!!!

      …. and of course, there is NO support from the folks in Redmond (or India, China, wherever the heck their NO support group is located)

      FYI: Just like the title of this article says, \”Check your Hotmail using Microsoft Outlook without Windows Live Hotmail Plus Subscription\”. Yes, it does work and always has since my installation back in February 2007.
      Also that includes cracked versions of office 2007. This is my setup,

      1)windows office 2007 enterprise edition. Make sure to use enterprise edition if going the cracked route(like myself)…Zero problems with updates, syncs ext.

      2) latest vs of Microsoft Outlook connector. (Microsoft has had issues with their connector since day one regardless of cracked vs or not so just stick with it and if error messages turn up go check for new versions.

      Also try opening up your outlook client software-select tools-then account settings and you\’ll see all mapi email accounts listed. Now remove(use remove button) any mapi address linked with windows live email accounts. Then select yes for are you sure you want to delete this email etc etc…. know restart your outlook client and you should be able to sync error free.

      Remember, you must pay for the plus service in order to sync calendars up.

      I fixed the sync problem with outlook 2007 and the connector by deleting the account and adding it again.

      I was trying to organize my emails in folders in outlook and have it sync to hotmail but midway it stopped syncing. I backed up my outlook hotmail into a .pst file and deleted the account. Then I created it again with the connector while offline. I logged into my hotmail account and deleted everything but kept the folders that I created (everything was empty). Then when I checked for outlook to work online it started to sync once again and outlook uploaded everything in their appropriate place in hotmail.

      if you subscribe to hotmail plus do you still ahve to use outlook connector or do they use another menthod of connection?

      Pour ma part il ne se passe rien :
      j\’ai installé puis configuré outlook connector sur mon Office Outlook 2007, il me crée correctement le dossier, mais lorsque je fais recevoir, il ne recoit rien.

      Dans mon rapport détaillé j\’ai le même problème que Ronald avait :
      Erreur de Courrier
      Erreur de synchronisation de votre compte de messagerie. Vérifiez que votre compte est correctement configuré en accédant d\’abord à vos messages sur le Web.
      Erreur : 4350.

      Je suis allé voir sur mon compte hotmail et je n\’ai rien trouvé.
      Quelqu\’un peut-il m\’aider? (j\’ai déjà désinstallé puis réinstallé le programme ainsi que supprimé le compte puis recrée)

      so i dl’d the connector and installed, and my hotmail account shows in the side bar.
      however, it won’t let me view the folders. it says ‘Unable to display the folder. Microsoft Office Outlook could not access the specified folder location.’
      What the heck does that mean?
      How do i set it up so it dl’s the emails on a http connection instead of this connector thing?

      At first it did not work. but If you read the whole thing carefully first and do it then it would be ok. for me it works fine. and for who it does not then you have o remove all the folders and start it over again. stop crying like a baby.

      It worked! It’s freaking amaizing because I tryed and tryed forvever without any results at all. Now, let me tell you and all of you that was possible. For me, it was just a matter of restart my competer for each step given by the article.       Just made a friend a new gmail account – guess what; gmail now support importing all contacts and emails with a new import function. It’s a trial, that will work upwards to 30 days. SO you still have to add the pop3 account for your hotmail / live mail / whatever microshit mail there is ; -)

      Put all to the same label; you are done?

      Hi i’ve been given Office 2007 Enterprise which i’ve loaded on my new PC. however previously on my old machine using office 2003 pro, i could receive and send messages using Outlook, (for my hosted webmail. now using Enterprise it received the messages forwarded from my webmail server but i cant send any. it gives me the following message
      553 sorry, that domain isn’t in my list of allowed rcpthosts

      I am going mad trying to sort out my synchronization problems between outlook and hotmail. I have followed every bit of advice I can find. I have removed and re-downlaoded everything and I still keep getting this;

      Hi there
      I have sucessfully linked my hotmail account to Outlok and it is all working well, but it hasnot transferred all of my email saved in my hotmail account. Strangely it has only transferred 2007-2008!!
      Any ideas how i can get them all over, as i need to refer to them frequently.

      I have a regular hotmail account, prior to 2009 I was able to download my email Outlook Express as well as checking it on the web. Both Outlook and web had always the same emails in all folders.
      in 2009 I had to change configuration in outlook Express.
      I can still check my email either from Outlook exp. or the web but I can’t see sent emails from Outlook on the web and vice-versa,
      folders are also no longer synchronized as they used to.

      Help would be greatly appreciated

      I recently upgraded my computer with Windows7 and Office2007.
      I’m using my hotmail email in office outlook via Outlook Connector. The issue I’m facing is, though it completely imported all of my inbox messages but imported a only couple month of sent items into sent item folder.
      Does anyone please suggest what can be the solution to get all of my sent item into outlook?

      Thank you Raymond so muchfor your help.. I am facing a problem in displaying Hotmail and MSN messages “Only” using the connector..
      I have Outlook 2007.. and Using Windows xp sp3
      In reading pane I got a message “This Item cannot be displayed in the reading pane. Open the Item to read its contents.
      When I double click the un opened message, annother error message appears stating “Cannot open this Item, An OLE registration Error occurred . The program is not correctly installed, Run setup again for the program.
      I am sure that this is not correct message becuase I tried to reinstall the outlook several times.. and for a simple reason : Whay the other messages of POP origin appears and clearely?
      Moreover I noted that there are no any restriction clauses is active….
      Can you assist me ?
