After spending a few weeks testing cloud antivirus, I now finally have my answer to my own question on whether can a cloud antivirus replace the traditional antivirus. I’ve said before that ALL antivirus slows down the computer and that is a fact. The amount of malware today grows very rapidly compared to many years ago and the same goes to the virus signature file (some antivirus signature files is as big as a few hundred megabytes). Just imagine cross checking one file that you want to scan with a database containing millions of record… Some antivirus company such as AVG and Norton implements scanning technique that is really fast and efficient, hence the time taken to complete a full scan is really short. However if you look at Dr.Web antivirus, the percent increase to complete a full scan is more than 2000% if compared to AVG 2011.

So cloud antivirus is signature-less and supposedly won’t make your computer slow. I’ve benchmarked Panda Cloud Antivirus Pro, Immunet Protect Plus, Prevx, Trend Micro Titanium and if compared the results against AVG Antivirus 2011 which uses the traditional method, AVG 2011 is actually faster! Don’t get me wrong, cloud antivirus are light but definitely not the lightest. Second important aspect is how good is the detection rate? If an antivirus doesn’t require a signature locally on the computer, that means it must have some kind of behavior based detection to know if that file is dangerous or not and subsequently cross checking it with the antivirus servers. Logically the cloud antivirus cannot be cross checking EVERY file on your computer with their servers or else the scanning time may take hours or days to complete…
I have tested Panda Cloud Antivirus Pro, Immunet Protect Plus, Prevx and Trend Micro Titanium against:
a) 27 viruses that are quite old (most antivirus can already recognize them as threats)
b) 3 fully undetected malwares (2 trojans and 1 bot) with the initials AARC, PXR and RB.
c) 1 well-known remote administration tool (RAT) with the initials BSN.
Panda Cloud Antivirus Pro

- Detected all 27 virus
- Unable to detect AARC, PXR and RB
- Detected BSN and able to successfully remove even with protect process enabled.
Immunet Protect Plus
- Detected 26/27 virus
- Unable to detect AARC, PXR and RB
- Unable to detect BSN
Prevx
- Detected 20/27 virus
- Detected AARC and PXR but missed RB
- Detected BSN
Trend Micro Titanium
- Detected 23/27 virus
- Unable to detect AARC, PXR and RB
- Unable to detect BSN
I did not include Comodo Cloud Scanner and Hitman Pro because they are on-demand scanners and doesn’t provide real time protection. If you still remember the review I did on Zemana AntiLogger with a very positive review, it is able to block all (b) and (c). Out of curiosity, I wanted to know if the detection rate of Panda Cloud Antivirus Pro is the same as the traditional Panda Antivirus Pro 2011. So I installed Panda Antivirus Pro 2011 and it has the exact same detection result as the Panda Cloud. Prevx seems to be very good in detecting trojans but it misses the fully undetectable RB bot.
To compare the detection rate of Cloud antivirus against AVG, Avira and Avast:
1. AVG Free 2011 has the same detection rate as Panda Cloud Antivirus Pro.
2. Avira AntiVir Personal unable to detect AARC and RB.
3. Avast Free 5.0 missed 2 virus, unable to detect AARC, PXR and RB.
Currently I would only dare to say Panda Cloud Antivirus Pro is good enough to be a possible replacement for traditional signature based antivirus. The detection rate is as good as the 3 big A’s (avira, avg, avast) and also quite light on system resources. Panda Cloud Antivirus is also very easy to configure with only a few easy to understand settings.
Thanks to Kurt, a member of the moderator team in the Panda Cloud forums for requesting 20 Panda Cloud Antivirus Pro activation codes to be given away to Raymond.CC readers. The Pro version of Panda Cloud cost US $29.95 per year and has every feature that is on the free version with an additional behavioral analysis of running processes, automatic USB vaccination to protect from autorun malware, automatic & transparent upgrades of new engine and program versions, VIP support and no nagging advertisements. If you’d like to be in the giveaway list, please first make sure you’re a subscriber and then leave a comment.

thanks great review
Panda has never been one of my favorites antivirus but, as you always said there is not worse thing than get you computer slow after instaling the AV. But if panda is fast, but not the fastest… I will give a shot to that new software, thanx for the information :D
Panda has developed a rock solid over the years. I knew back in 2008 it was considered one of the resource hog but it has come a long way and their new addition of cloud av is one of their biggest achievement. I have even tried their free product and would really like to use their pro version..
the main obstruction for cloud AV is dial up and wi fi users where the speed of browsing slows down and thus the cloud AV takes additonal band width.
I would love to have the pro version. I have been using the free for awhile and its great
hello, will like to try it out. thanks

I am using the free version of Panda Cloud on my desktop system which is always online. It does a great job but for some reason (I suspect, not sure) that is blocking system restore. After I installed it (and replaced Avast) system restore is giving an error! Have anyone checked that?

I like the whole idea of “cloud based” protection, but it doesn’t seem it’s that much different than traditional antivirus’. Maybe in time, they will come out with a better product.

For some reason OpenDNS gave me an error while trying to access this site on the past few days. Glad I didn’t miss this wonderful article, I never imagined that something like cloud antivirus exists…

Please count me in as well.

hello, raymond
also count on me, I know your blog until France
thank you
Nice review Raymond. I believe Panda Cloud has some signatures in its cache so offline detection for major virus/trojans is still somewhat possible. Please include me in the giveaway for Panda Pro. Thanks.
Count me in! I would love to get one of these codes if they are not already gone. You have a great site!
Answers a few questions I had–thanks Raymond.What detects RB then–maybe nothing!!
Good article
Very nice.. Super
Excellent review raymond. I hope to be one from twenty. thanks
I have had the free panda cloud version installed for quite some time now and I love it.
I tried two different pro versions of signature based antiviruses(Bitdefender and Norton)
trashed both of them,,very heavy on my computer”s resources.
i would certainly enjoy a licence for the pro version of Panda Cloud,my favorite.
Regards
Using Panda Cloud Free so pro would be nice addition. Excellent blog & great give away. Thanks.
nice review thanks
Please Raymond, count me too-
Count me in, I do a bit of personal testing myself. Started seeing a lot of undectable strains of trojans , for my current KISwahili 2011.
great…but I never use any of the above except prevx. That’s the one really impressed me on cloud antivirus-super small and fast! Some of my friends only use panda cloud as alternative scanner despite many reports praised it.interesting, but full function could be greater.
And what about the detection rate of Kaspersky and ESET? Of course I mean the latest version. Just for curiosity. Can you test it? Or may I have the test files?
Thanks Raymond for comprehensive review and test of Panda Cloud Antivirus Pro. Please count me in for giveaway. I would like to use Pro version for supplemental protection.
Regards
Count me in please!

Hi Raymond. Thanks for the nice review. Please count me in!
Thanks for sharing.Good job,Panda
Panda Cloud Anti-Virus ran on my Vista Ultimate 32-bit system without ANY noticeable drag on resources. And, believe it or not, I actually ran it with Norton Internet Security 2010 … at the same time! I mistakenly thought that it being in the Cloud would make running two AV’s okay. Panda strongly advises against this and, of course, I listened to them and uninstalled PAV. BUT, I had noticed absolutely NO detrimental effects on either Program’s functioning nor on my systems responsiveness.
Any opinions?
NOTE : I did notice PAV stores a huge amount of data (~2GB) in “tempCloudAV” files located in the SystemRoot. I believe this is done to allow continued protection when you are not connected to the Internet.
my anti-malware anxiety is loosening my intestines. save my supper by shuttling this giveaway my way!
thanks
I have been trying the free one on my daughters lower power lappy and been rather impressed also! Would love to try a full blown version, thanks.
Hi Raymond, I would like to participate in the draw to get the Panda cloud antivirus.
My philosophy is still prevention better than cure.
Later as the technology gets complicated both the balance of good and dark forces shall one way or the other be restored. Unless one day one of the parties could no longer access the knowledge that the other one has.
Panda cloud sounds great count me in :)
Again a very useful giveaway! I’m currently searching for a new antivirus, so this would be very nice.
Very informative!!! Appreciate your efforts! Thanks Ray!

Panda’s looks quite nice, but they force you to uninstall any current AV you have, before proceeding. :(
I currently use NIS 2011, and I think it’s pretty darn good!! Everything has improved 110% more than the 2009 versions. :)
Would love to try this light-weight coz my comp is too bloated now! Tks.
plz count me also
A good read as I don’t have any knowledge regarding cloud anti virus. I would really love to see how these cloud anti virus will improved in the future or rather how will the anti virus industry improve to compete with all these new technologies. With the release of windows 7, the virus is spreading is decreasing significantly …. at the very least I don’t see it much among my friends, if I have to say a reason, it would be the removal of autorun feature, one of the greatest flaw of windows
Thanks for the giveaway as usual but I’ll skip this giveaway for now.
very interesting ! thanks raymond
hope i get picked!! thanks!!
Hi Raymond :)
I would like, if you still have some, a license for Panda. Best regards from Norway

Nice, useful information as always. Thanks!
Hi Raymond,
Regarding Prevx, did you also execute the malware? Right click on demand scans are not Prevx’s strong point, as the behaviour detection doesn’t work until execution.
I would also like to join the Panda Cloud AV giveaway :)
Yes, I would like to win a license of Panda Cloud Pro! Thanks a lot for the post!
nice.. but what about bandwith?? do we have to upload every single file to be checked??

I´d like to get it
nice article…
count me in too…
Would be happy to get a license and try it out to see if Panda has really improved since the last time I used their AV some years ago when it was bloated and hard to uninstall.
I think Prevx focuses more on 0day and latest viruses more than on keeping track of outdated ones.
Anyhow it can run alongside any AV I’ve tested it with (avira, avast, nod) so as you said it is a good choice as a second wall of defense.
i would like 1 license please… thanks…
i want one…
panda seems to be a good choice… Count me in, too -plase! thx!!
Hey Ray, I’ll take one
btw, i really love your blogs, esp. when you compare anti-virus programs.
A nice “old-fashioned” Raymond article. Really like it, thanks. The question is, can a definition-based AV be combined with a cloud-orientated one?
Please count me in for the draw.
Count me in as well. I’m searching for a tool that is not heavy on system ressources and Panda Cloud seems to fit the bill perfectly. Thanks for this!
Yes Please include me in the draw.
Would like a copy :)
Thanks for the draw count me in.. :)
Thanks for your interesting review!
Thanks for the review, Raymond.
Would like to give it a chance.
good job raymond^^
@David Bradley: I didn’t like the fact that Prevx missed 7 viruses that are quite “old”. Probably Prevx can be a good second opinion scanner.
Yes Please Thumbs up to Panda
Please include me in the give away! Currently looking for new AV!
thats a great review Panda is a great product too.
Please count me in!
I hope i can get the activation key. Thanks Ray for always give us useful information. :)
I’m not sure why you choose Panda over PrevX, in your tests Panda doesn’t detect AARC, PXR and RB whereas PrevX only missed RB.
Count me in!
but still think prevx is great and hope panda can show it’s color .
Please count me in too.
btw, nice to see you again here :)
Hello Raymond.Great analysis on Cloud Av software.Count me in for a license.Keep well
