When you choose the Selection option and click Capture, the program minimizes to the Taskbar and the cursor turns into a crosshair. You click and drag it to define a rectangular area that you want to capture, and then when you release the mouse button it automatically saves the JPEG file to the specified location (the Desktop by default). I’m not sure why Siddharha had that problem; it worked when I tried it.
