The biggest headache to remotely access a computer is the port forwarding configuration. Few months ago I talked about accessing a remote computer in 2 minutes without port forwarding using Crossloop. It is one of the easiest way to connect to another computer at the opposite of the world even if the other person is a basic computer user. Just download, install, click share and give the access code to the person who wants to connect. Can’t get any easier than that… No need to worry about IP address, firewall or router configuration.

If for some reason you do not like or can’t get Crossloop to work, no worries as there are other alternative which might work better on your computer. This remote access tool called TeamViewer which I am about to show you has more features than Crossloop.

    • Let me walk you through on how easy it is to remotely access a computer using TeamViewer. Let’s say Joe wants to connect to Sharon’s computer to help her troubleshoot some computer problems.

    1. Joe will have to download the full version of TeamViewer which contains the remote access feature. As for Sharon, she can download the “Customer Module” which is smaller in size and doesn’t require installation.

    2. Joe and Sharon will have to run the downloaded TeamViewer.

    3. Sharon will be presented with a 8 digit ID and password which will have to give to Joe.

    4. Joe enters the ID and click Connect to partner button.

    5. Joe enters the password which he received from Sharon.

    6. Joe is now connected to Sharon’s computer and able to view and control her computer.

    There are a bunch of useful features at the top bar of the remote screen. You can easily transfer file, start a chat session so you don’t need to open up notepad to chat with your partner, record remote access session to have a log on what you did, remote reboot and disable keyboard and mouse to prevent the other person from messing around when you’re doing your job. One of the weird feature is the “show black screen”. This feature will make the remote partner screen turns black so you can do whatever you want without letting the partner know what you did. It’s a little weird isn’t it?

    Other than that, recently TeamViewer released a version for Mac OS. The new TeamViewer for Mac even supports cross-platform access so you are now able to connect to a Mac from your Windows machine and back! Since they have a Mac version, I believe they will start working on a Linux version pretty soon as Mac is built from Linux.

    By default TeamViewer uses only the outgoing Port 80 (HTTP), so no firewall configuration is necessary. It is also advisable to open port 5938 for incoming connections which may result in faster point-to-point connections.

    I’ve heard about TeamViewer for quite a long time already but I’ve never really tested it. Now that I’ve tested TeamViewer and I am glad I did, it would be my first choice whenever I need to remotely help someone with computer problems.

      Hi Ray i’m using teamviewer for a long time ago and i’m very happy.
      I always get the same ID on my teamviewer and i don’t know how!
      The only bad thing is that the teamviewer is only for non commercial use and after some connections blocks me and i get the message: “Commercial use suspected!”…I can’t do anything for that. :(

      Again (every remote access article I keep saying this xD), LogMeIn (www.logmein.com) is still better. TeamViewer does have a little more functions, but LogMeIn don’t have any kind of block no matter how many times you use it…

      Hey Fetterbr – this could work but i’m not quite sure about the risk.

      Netmeeting had a ‘remote desktop sharing’ feature which enables you to remotelly access your computer from another computer without any interaction from the computer that you are going to control.

      Method is simple, launch netmeeting (or run > and type “conf” if it doesn’t display from your start menu) click tools > remote desktop sharing > next all the way until finish and it will pop out your screen saver properties for you to make adjustments. After that, on netmeeting – click call and exit and activate remote desktop sharing. An icon will appear in your taskbar.

      To access, just launch netmeeting from any other computer, connect to your IP and when prompted, i think you just need to enter your admin username and password to access. You may want to enable secure incoming calls as well just in case.

      This will only work if you have admin access to that pc. Honestly, it had been a while since i last used this, but hey it worked!

      oh yeah, another thing, this only works if that computer have a direct internet connection and does not pass any office firewall or proxy or stuffs…

      My office had firewall and proxies, but from home, i use VPN to get into the local network, and from there, use the local ip to connect.

      just love teamviewer..have been a logmein fan for ages but the only downside is that unless you pay you don\’t have ability to transfer files between computers after the first few hours….no firewall problems, I installed the full version on my machine and have my family install just the session .exe file & it works great…can\’t recommend it enough

      I also received the warning: “commercial use suspected”. Even though I don’t use it that way.
      I managed to change my ID, and now the message is gone.
      What I did:
      Close Teamviewer
      Delete directory: \documents and settings\username\applcation data\teamviewer
      Delete registry folder: hkcu/software/teamviewer and hklm/software/teamviewer
      Then I changed the MAC address of my LAN card.
      When I restarted TeamViewer I got a new ID!

      hi Laurent, i just tried this method and get a successfull result, just some missing : you need to uninstall Team Viewer first, remeber to select \\\”Remove Settings\\\” option before uninstall.

      And i have used it as a Non-Commercial version.. but in the installation i ve selected the Commercial version accidentally…

      After someday, while loggin into the Teamviewer it says the “License Expired”..

      First of all Nihad
      you uninstall you copy of Teamviewer, clean the registry with registry cleaner(u can use Ccleaner)
      Delete the following folders-
      c:\\\\\\\\documents and settings\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\Application Data\\\\\\\\Teamviewer
      and C:\\\\\\\\Program Files\\\\\\\\Teamviewer

      Now, install a fresh copy of Teamviewer.
      Don\\\\\\\’t forget to choose personal use (Hope ur using for personal use only?)

      Is it absolutely necessary to change your MAC address when you uninstall, remove registry entries, and reinstall. If you don’t change your mac address, will you get the same ID back again ? Thanks

      I used Teamviewer several times to help friends.
      Now I get kicked out after 5 minutes session, and I must wait 1-2 minutes before I can reconnect.

      Is the free version good only for 5 minutes now? May need to switch to another product?

      TeamViewer DEFINATELY tracks your MAC ADDRESS. So, read above… but to refresh….
      1) uninstall
      2) clean your hard drive of Teamviewer directories
      3) clean your registry of TV entries
      4) change your MAC address
      5) Reboot, Reinstall TV
      6) Ready to roll again !

      I’ve changed my MAC 6 times now and every time it works.

      ALL the info you need is in previous posts, just read, experiment, and it will work for you too.

      I’ve tried this on my wife’s machine and another friend from my laptop with no problem. However, when I had a neighbor in Colorado try so I could help him, his screen never showed an ID or the password set up for ‘Wait for Session’. The lower left of the window shows a red box with the notation: ‘Not ready. Please check your connection.’, instead of the usual green check saying: ‘Ready to connect’.

      Any ideas? I can access his machine fine with Logmein, but we’ve uninstalled/reinstalled TeamViewer several times with no success.

      For those of you having the “not ready please check your internet connection”, check your firewall configurations… I had the same problem and recently realized that McAfee Total Protection decided to block Team Viewer..

      Teamviewer sends your computer mac address which is then recorded on their server. When the trial expires you will never be able to use the product as a trial or for free unless you change the mac address. A reinstall would be useless!

      What trial are you talking about? I’ve been using Teamviewer for months, and never had a problem. I occasionally get a “commercial use suspected” when using it from work to connect to home, but that is still personal non-commercial use. I’ve never seen anything about a trial or an expiration.

      Teamviewer is a great product. Lots of functions and I would definitely recommend it. Its free version is perfect for home users but I find it too limited for professional use.
      The pro version isn’t affordable for everybody, including myself. I would like to recommend you some professional alternatives that I found recently. First would be Logmein which is worth its price. The second is Techinline. Very simple tool with lovely prices.
