Fix Firefox 3 Crashing Problem Caused By Kaspersky 2009 Products

I’d have never thought that Kaspersky 2009 product is the culprit that causes Firefox 3 to crash randomly mainly because some people reported that they experienced Firefox 3 crashing on a newly installed Windows with a new Firefox profile. I could only remember that Firefox 3 RC1 was running perfectly fine and the crashing problem only started when I was using RC2. At first I thought that the crashing problem is caused by Firefox RC2 but I was wrong. I totally forgotten that Kaspersky 2009 products was released on 8th of June, which is 4 days later after installing Firefox 3 RC2.

Fix Firefox 3 Crash Solution

The reason why I did not suspect that Kaspersky is the cause of the crashing problem is because I totally disabled Kaspersky from startup. Again, I was wrong. Even though I’ve disabled Kaspersky from startup, it will still load some DLL files belonging to Kaspersky such as mzvkbd.dll, kloehk.dll, adialhk.dll and etc which will not be visible in Windows Task Manager.

After spending many hours in checking and testing, I am pretty sure that this time I’ve found the fix for Firefox 3 crashing problem.

You can try replicating the problem yourself if you have Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 or Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2009 with Firefox 3. Simply login to web based Gmail and try closing the tab. Firefox 3 should crash. Another problem which mEtRiX, our forum moderator is experiencing is when he clicks the Bookmarks from the menu bar, it opens the add bookmark dialog window instead of the bookmark drop down list.

All this Firefox 3 crashing problem is caused by Kaspersky Internet Security’s new feature called Virtual Keyboard which is used for safe entry of logins and passwords to prevent keystroke logging.
Disable Kaspersky Virtual Keyboard
Kaspersky has confirmed the bug and they are in the midst of testing the fixed version which will be released in the coming weeks. I certainly can’t wait any longer because it is affecting my web browsing experience and I don’t want to use Opera or Internet Explorer. I had no choice but to look for a solution. I found a solution which I’ve tested for a few days and not a single Firefox 3 crash ever since.

1. Download Sysinternals AutoRuns for Windows.

2. Extract and run autoruns.exe

3. Click AppInit tab and uncheck C:\Progra~1\Kasper~1\Kasper~1\mzvkbd.dll
Disabled Kaspersky mzvkbd.dll

4. Restart your computer.

Kaspersky Virtual Keyboard feature is only available for Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 but weirdly people who has Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2009 installed is also affected by this. Some people has reported that mzvkbd.dll file (the cause of Firefox 3 crash) is loaded onto the system even when they are using KAV 2009. One of the Kaspersky forum moderator admitted that they were included by mistake and will probably removed for good in the next build.

It is absolutely safe in disabling mzvkbd.dll using Sysinternals Autoruns. When there is a new update for Kaspersky that fixes this problem, I’d advice you to enable back the DLL file.

Thanks to bahamot for suggesting to me that Kaspersky might be the culprit which made me start investigating the problem from there.

Hi. I use KIS 2009 and Firefox 3 RC 3 together. My FF 3 does crash but not during the times you said. It sometimes crashes when i quit FF with more than one tab open. It varies and I haven’t seen any repeating pattern yet. I run Vista SP1 on a Dell Inspiron 6400.

    • http://www.raymond.cc/ Raymond

The problems that I mentioned are only “some” of the crashing problems. I do randomly get crashes when opening or closing tabs, quitting firefox, surfing on some sites, filling up forms and etc…

This method should solve all the Firefox 3 crashing problems if you have Kaspersky installed.

    • Zebulon303

Done ! Thank you … I will report in a few days … I am relieved the culprit might have been found ….

    • Florin

This problem may appear if you install kis 2009 over kis 2007 (don’t know why ),try complete uninstall ,registry clean then install again .I have kis 2009 and firefox 3 and no such problems.Just a sugestion…

    • Florin

sry instead kis 2007 is kis 7.0.325….

    • Ammar

      Thanks Raymond.

      First time writing in…

Thanks Raymond. The timing of this article is perfect. Just installed KIS 2009 trial last night and this morning my FF3 started crashing randomly (after clicking on a mail, closing tabs etc.)

      Downloading autoruns now…

Thank you Raymond, I can use my favorite browser without problems now!!!

I even switched to Linux to run firefox without problem, but the lag of the firefox when viewing sites with a lot of flash was awful. So I needed a quick solution, which i got thanks to you!

    • GabS

Raymond… Thanks alot.. But I cannot download the Systernal Autorun from your link.. Why is that? Is there any other way to obtain it?

    • IanG

Why put up with all this crashing nonsense? I suppose
it is the same reason people put up with Windows.

    • http://www.raymond.cc/ Raymond

I don’t see that Windows XP, Firefox 3 and Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 a nonsense. They are ESSENTIAL software that I use EVERYDAY.

    • Jo

No problems here with Firefox3 (in use since Beta2) and KIS 2009 (in use since 2 weeks). I’m running XP Home+SP3
I think the FF crashes are Vista specific.

    • bahamot

FF crashes is not Vista specific. I’m using XP SP2 w/ latest update but getting the crashes.
Just tested out about closing Gmail tab, and it really crashed the FF.

    • http://www.mayurjango.blogspot.com/ mayur

      Thanks Raymond…

    • Jo

Ok, you\’re right bahamot, I closed a gmail tab and had the crash.
This tab was active for over a week without problems.
Also I open and close tabs daily. I have an average of 30 open tabs.
So it must be something specific in a web page, intercepted by KIS2009 and causing FF to crash.

Works a treat! After weeks of firefox crashes was about to use IE again.

      Vista 32

Mine doesn’t crash. I have XP SP3, kis2009(8.0.0.357) and the only crashes i had were of an add-on Firefox Showcase

I don’t know. I was getting crashes (during installations after downloads) but was not using KIS/KAV at the time. I had Avira running. I got 2 crashes one day, three the next. It’s been a couple weeks now, and the problem has gone away as mysteriously as it came. Keeping my fingers crossed!

    • John

      To GabS: try going to
      http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/0e18b180-9b7a-4c49-8120-c47c5a693683.aspx
You can then navigate to the Suite and either download the program, or download the entire suite, and unpack only those you need.

The RootkitRevealer included will uncover many rootkits that various AV programs miss. It’s concept bypasses many of the Windows services that most AVs use.

    • Desalegn

This is a perfect article. I was experiencing the same problem and I was sure that the cause is Kaspersky 8. I had no the fix. thanks for the solution.Raymond, a great man. There is also one add-on that I really want to use, but still crashing Firefox. The name of the add-on is called Spy security guard which comes with Spyware Terminator(I really like this one since it is fast and uses less resource, on Vista).
Can you suggest any to fix for this problem too?

      thanks

    • http://www.scovery.es Scovery

I have the same problem, thanks for your work… I\’m waiting for the fix.

    • James

      Right.

Add the following update server. to the kaspersky update server.

      ftp://dnl-test.kaspersky-labs.com/beta_updates/ap

Update, restart, make sure you change bac to original KIS servers, and onlyupdate the database modules. Available to change on the update settings.

      All problems sorted.

Disabling the Virtualkeyboard doesn’t help the issue…

    • http://www.raymond.cc/ Raymond

@James: Ever since I disabled mzvkbd.dll, Firefox 3 didn’t even crash once. I’d prefer to wait for the official stable update from Kaspersky.

This seems to fix it for me too. I can’t believe anti-virus software as good as this has this kind of problem. Could you please let us know or post it here when Kaspersky creates an update to fix this. It would be greatly appreciated.

    • sbw07

Raymond, I have all 3 kaspersky dlls (mzkvbd, adialhk, kloehk, & RemoveFocusRect)all on one line- in one entry – in Autoruns. Shoyld I disable the whole entry?

    • Danial

I wonder if this is the real cause of the high memory usage occuring between Kaspersky 2009 and Firefox 3.x

    • http://Fixed! Dayna

This worked! I had to uncheck 2 boxes on mine tho but it was because i had 2 there somehow for Mozilla 2 and Mozilla 3. File names were mzvkbd.dll and mzvkbd3.dll in case anyone else sees the same 2. Wouldnt work if i just unchecked the one mentioned by the author of this.
Mine was only crashing when i would go to check windows live mail.

    • Nitin

      Hi ray,
can you please review this again that it is fixed or not.
