Recently Microsoft has came up with updates that caused many users to get an error message says “Microsoft Office Word has not been installed for the current user. Please run setup to install the application.” when you try to run it. After clicking the OK button, Microsoft Word closes. You’ll be getting the same error message if you try to run any of the other office components such as Excel, Publisher, Access, Outlook and etc… The worst part is uninstalling and reinstalling wouldn’t help to fix this problem.
Microsoft Office Word has not been installed for the current user. Please run setup to install the application
There’s a Microsoft KnowledgeBase on this issue and the solution is to give EVERYONE full control of the Opa11.dat file. Unfortunately this solution would only help to fix the problem when the non-administrative user accounts on the computer do not have permission to modify specific files that are used by the Office 2003 Setup program or the Office XP Setup program.

Another reason why this problem occur is you have using a pirated version of Microsoft Office and you’ve recently installed the latest updates. Some people are able to resolve this issue by using system restore but here’s a simpler way to fix this problem.

The file that is causing this error is MSO.DLL located at C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE11 for Office 2003 and C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE12 for Office 2007. Somehow Microsoft has updated this file to give you this error message when it detects a pirated copy of Office that is installed on your computer. When you try to run a repair or even uninstallation, the setup wouldn’t touch the MSO.DLL file at all. That is why after repairing / uninstallation, you’ll still get the same error.

The simple solution is to search for the file MSO.DLL in your computer and copy the older MSO.DLL file replacing the current one in Program Files. I found two versions of MSO.DLL in C:\WINDOWS\Installer\$PatchCache$\Managed\…..
Replace Office MSO.dll file
If you can’t find the other backed up MSO.DLL file in your computer, you can simple delete the current MSO.DLL file from Program Files and then do a repair or reinstallation of Microsoft Office 2003 or 2007. That would restore the older version of MSL.DLL from the installation CD.

Pirating a software is bad, but I wonder since when Microsoft started to teach pirates a lesson by giving such annoyance to some users who may not even realize that they have a pirated version of Office installed by a computer shop?

Good article for users who don’t know how to resolve the problem.

BTW, there’s a Typo in the article matter.

In the second line of the second last paragraph of the article, it should be MSO.dll instead of MSL.dll.

I have used these for a while now and I must say that I have never had a Problem (The website updates its product in a timely manner)

Once I become employed again I plan to make a Donation to the company to further the improve the programs they offer – - For F-R-E-E!!!

      What a Beautiful website.

      Thanks for this tips
Had this problem a month ago when after a complete reintal of my computer I try to reinstall office.
I was prompted the message that I overused the number of installation (That was due to multiple complete reinstal of windows.
used this file to bypass the problem.

The strange thing is that I have a serial for the net (not brought by me) that is allways working although the one I bought is now restricted

None of the articles I found on the web worked to resolve this problem. What I did realize from searching is that it was my profile specifically. I created a test account with admin priviliges and copied the ‘documents and settings’ from this acct to a temp folder. Then, I logged on as the test user and I removed my current account. I then went to ‘my computer’/properties/advanced/settings (for user profiles). I deleted the old profile. Once this was complete, I re-created the original account and copied the profile values I had previously saved form documents and settings (you know, my docs, my favs, desktop items, etc.) I am now back up and running as if I am a first time user, except all my apps are intact so no re-install.

    • rera_avis

JUST AMAZING ——– HOW SIMPLE THAT WAS BUT BELIEVE ME U ARE THE ONLY TRUE SOLUTION TELLER IN THE WHOLE WEB —FOR THIS PROBLEM——-JUST GREAT–:)

    • Michael C

This does not just happen to pirate versions. I’ve got the original CD sitting right here and it keeps coming back every few months. Someone pays me money to fix the problem and a few months later I have to come back and fix it again. Driving me crazy.

    • Nathan

I had this same problem where the “microsoft office has not been installed for the current user. please run setup to install the application” error comes up no matter which office app I try and open. I tried deleting the MSO.DLL, reinstalling office, repairing office, uninstalling and then reinstalling office. None of that worked. Then I tried recreating a new admin account and that didin’t work.

But I found a solution that did work! I TURNED OFF THE UAC (User Account Control). This finally allowed me to open up my MS Office apps. Wonder what the issue is that the UAC prevents me from being able to access my LEGAL copies of MS OFFICE 2007?!?

bueno soy peruano y tengo una solucion que a mi me funciono (well I´m peruvian and I got a solution that worked for me)
in windows vista – and office ultimate 2007
      just go to mi pc
      clic in tool (herramientas)
      clic folder option(opciones de carpeta)
clic on tag see or watch(ver)
clic in show hidden files and folders(mostrar todos los archivos y carpetas ocultos)

then open unit “c”(luego abrir la unidad c)
you will see that it shows 2 hidden folders (veras que se muestran 2 carpetas escondidas)
      program data
      and
      MSOcache

open the folder program data(abrir la carpeta program data)
open the folder microsoft(abrir la carpeta microsoft)
open the folder office (abrir la carpeta office)
open the folder data (abrir la carpeta data)
      delete all inside (borra todo)

when you open a office program like word (cuando abras un programa de office como word)
you will have to validate again and reeplace the mso.dll(tendras que validar y reemplazar el mso.dll)
again that works for me :D(otra vez eso funciona pa’ mi :D)

i am one of the few people in the world who actually paid money for microsoft word, and so when i got the message it bothered me a little at first — until i lost my disc with the setup files on it, and now i can’t use word at all

it makes me very, very angry that i lost so much money on a program that everyone else (my mother included) has just decided to steal

      bad microsoft, bad!

    • A helping hand

Step 1: Give Permission to Office Registry keys

      1. Click Start, click Run or Start Search, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK or enter.
      2. In Registry Editor, locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft and then click the subkey Office
      3. On the Edit menu, click Permissions.
      4. Under Group or user names, click Everyone.

Note: – You must add the Everyone group if it is not available. To do this, follow these steps:

      A. In the Permission for Office dialog box, click Add.
      B. In the Select Users, Computers, or Groups dialog box, click Advanced.
      C. In the Select Users, Computers, or Groups dialog box, click Find Now
      D. Under Name (RDN), click Everyone, and then click OK.
      E. In the Select Users, Computers, or Groups dialog box, click OK.

      5. Under Permissions for Everyone, click to select the Full Control check box.
      6. Click OK
      7. Do Step 2 to 6 for HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office.
      8. Quit Registry Editor.
      9. Now check for the issue.

If the issue persists or an error is encountered when performing above steps, let’s move on:

Step 2: Give Permission to OPA12.dat file

      1. Click Start, type Run in the Start Search box and then press Enter on the keyboard, type %AllUsersprofile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Data.
      2. Right Click on OPA12.dat or OPA12.
      3. Click on Properties.
      4. Go to security Tab.
      5. Click Add and then Type Everyone and then click on check names
      6. Click on OK.
      7. Under Permissions for Everyone, click to select the Full Control check box.
      8. Click on Apply and Then OK.
      9. Now check for the issue.

    • Gizew

      Works perfectly. Great

Here’s another possible fix for the issue, “Microsoft Office Word has not been installed for the current user. Please run setup to install the application.”

      Background:
      - I had Microsoft Office 2003 working fine on Win XP. As far as I know it is a legitimate CD which I purchased (not a pirate copy).
      - After installing on my new laptop that is running Windows Vista Ultimate x64, the above error occurred when running Word (or any of the other office apps) the first time.
      - After clicking OK to the error message the app closes.
      - Tried uninstalling, clearing registry entries, deleting files, and then reinstalling. Same issue.

Here’s what worked for me (so far):
      1. Ran each of the apps as the administrator.
Example: Right-click on Winword.exe and select “Run as administrator”
This enabled the “activation” process to run.

      2. Then when starting the apps using the normal shortcuts they no longer get the error although they still go through some process of installing or configuring the apps.
This “process” causes an unnecessary delay in starting up the applications, so I created shortcuts that run the .exe files directly. Then they start up very fast, although Publisher and InfoPath still seem think some components still need to be “installed” each time I start them.

      Hope this helps.

    • http://www.getnput.com Kifayat

Simply Give Run As Administrator Permission to the Exe files. (winword.exe etc) and it will run

    • RogerF

None of the solutions listed here work for me except running the apps as administrator. I have a legal copy of Office so this is very annoying. They (Outlook, Word, Excel) had all been running fine for months, then all of a sudden they stopped working.

I find that if you installed a pirated copy, you just need to use the crack MSO.DLL and place it in the directory, and that will fix this issue, and allow the cracked version to continue working.

When I try to delete the MSO.DLL file in programs, it tells me I don’t have permission. How do I get permission to delete it?

Also, if I try to copy the older file and paste it into the programs file where the bad MSO.DLL is, I get a message that says “The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process –”

Is that because I haven’t deleted the MSO.DLL file in programs?

Here is another solution… open a Gmail account or other… use firefox, it allows you to set gmail to be your mail client. Done in 5 secs, been screwing with my office for 3 days now. One more reason to be done with Microsoft and it’s headaches.

    • timtom

For those who keep having problems you may need an interactive firewall (not the crappy, useless microlimp one). I prefer Sunbelt Kerio. Set your program preference to disallow all outgoing communication office/word applications, which serve no helpful purpose for you to use the software. Otherwise word will keep communicating out to micro’s servers and sending back disabling code if they suspect your software is compromised. Microsoft stole much of their original code when they started (as does almost everyone in software development) but like to play high and mighty if someone does the same to them, so much so that they even create havoc for those who buy their programs, as many of you with legitimate copies are discovering. I don’t think we’ll need to pass the hat around for them anytime soon, regardless. :^)

    • raymen

I am using Windows 7 Ultimate and MS Office Ultimate 2007 but I could not resolve this issue. Simly there was not any MSO.DLL file in the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE12 directory. Anyway I have found one old MSO.DLL file in C:\Windows\Installer\$PatchCache$\Managed0002119E20000000000000000F01FEC\12.0.6425 and than I copied it and paste it in the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE12 directory. I tried to start the application Word but without any succsess. After that I’ve decided to test it again and I have repaired the MS Office package and rebooted the PC .

    • Mohamed Shalaby

non of the above solutions really worked for me, and for those who has done all the steps mentioned in the article and the replies, but no value. You can just run an office crack called “microsoft.office.professional professional.plus enterprise ultimate.2007.sp1.trial-patch-xprj-master-of-devils”. It really worked for me; although i have a licensed version of MS office, but i had the error message. This company really sucks “MicroSucks”.

Simply deleting the OPA12.dat file and running an office program fixed the problem for me.

    • johnny_GG

For those of you having persistent problems with the cracked MSO.DLL file being updated by Microsoft and rendered useless, try this:

Once you’ve replaced it with the original cracked version in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE11 for Office 2003 and C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE12 for Office 2007. then right click on the MSO.DLL file and click properties, in General tab at the bottom of the dialogue box where it says “Attributes” tick the check box for “Read Only” that should stop further MS updates altering the file.
      Hope this helps

    • Brendon

Hi – just got this message and am using 2003 – how do I find the original cracked version of MSO.DLL – i keep deleting the file i find and then repair /instal but error still shows up…don’t know what else to do?

Replacing mso.dll file worked like a charm. Thank you.

I had a form of this problem using Vista x64. After much trial and error I found the cure. To test whether you have the same problem go to your office directory and right click on excel.exe or something and run as supervisor. If it runs immediately then the following cure should work.

Using Regedit (make a system restore point first) and navigate to :-

      HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData

Right click on UserData > permissions > highlight users > advanced > tick the boxes below about permissions > edit and enable full control. Make sure you APPLY the changes.

This will give full rights to the user for ALL installations listed in ‘subdirectories’ of Userdata.

Office components should now work if you have done it correctly.

If you want to limit permissions to just office then you will need to apply to the following only :-

      HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18

      \Components\379E92CC2CB71D119A12000A9CE1A22A

First of all, i tried almost every solution written on this site, but none of them worked. It almost drove me crazy. It pissed me off so much, that i didn’t have any other option than to do this:

First i created a new windows account and gave it admin permissions.
Second, i went to Documents and settings, and copied everything necessary (for me), such as Desktop, My Documents, Mozilla settings, etc.., to new account.

Then i modified and renamed the new account to look exactly as the previous acc did.

Everything works like a charm now, and if the problem re-appears, i’ll simply repeat these steps.

This solution is 100%, so i hope i helped at least some of you.

      Regards

After losing my legit serial (printed on dvd cover which I accidentally threw away) I installed Office student 2007 with pirated key and crack from Piratebay. I thought that when I have the original DVD what’s illegal about that? After the last update the said annoying message came up. Now I tried to reinstall with another legitimate serial from my laptop, didn’t work. After trying all the afore mentioned, I became frustrated. But I finally pulled it off, thanks to Steve (nr. 69). Deleting the OPA12.dat file worked great. After deleting I had to validate (I have a legit serial now again so no problem). Thanks!

A word of warning. My problem listed above was the result of using a registry cleaner that found about 3x the number of ‘problems’ that my regular one does. Just how it managed to foul up permissions I know not. I now use only Wise Registry Cleaner Pro which has always been safe if used sensibly.

Tried everything, the only thing that works is to set each app as administrator.

However, when I did that each time it has to go through the “installation” process.

By the way, my copy of Office 2007 enterprise is perfectly legal.

    • abbas

The MSO.DLL file location is different in Windows x64 (64-bit)

Actual MSO.DLL Location for x64 Windows is
      C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\microsoft shared\OFFICE12

I have Windows 7 X64 and that was where is copied the above file uploaded by Oren<thanks to you mate

None of this crap worked for me. I have windows 7 and was installing a corporate version of Enterprise 2007.

      This file worked for me:
      microsoftfixit50302

If you have a real version it deletes the licensing and reauthorizes and the program runs again. This is only the first 5 minutes so I don’t know if it will last…

    • bio

follow the link given by Oren…once downloaded..open the file…and follow the instructions on the txt file. I have windows 7 and office ultimate 2007. worked like a charm…

thanks to oren and everyone else!!!

Thank you so much for this fix. I was taking a break from writing a quarter report when I got the problem. Windows updated automatically as I was shutting down and the next time I turned it on, I couldn’t open the document I have been working on for the last three days! Microsoft should not make these product updates a burden to the users. It’s a good thing we have people like you who see where Microsoft cant, and who can offer user-friendly solutions. More power to your blog!

    • http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928218 Manual Avi

Windows XP SP3, Office 2007 Enterprise.

Unfortunately for me nothing worked on this thread. What did work for me was to use the Windows Install Cleanup utility to remove all Office 2007 items. Then followed the steps in this article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928218 to manually remove Office. I then reinstalled after a reboot and everything is working again. I also have an MSDN license so i used a different key that what i was using originally.

    • ComputerBoob

It worked just as you explained it. Thanks!

    • Paul

This method didn’t work for me, but another one did. Instead of looking for the old mso.dll myself, I went to the new dll, then right clicked it and selected “Restore previous versions”. Then windows searches for old versions which you can restore.

Maybe I was lucky, but I’ll go ahead and make a restore point more often now. Yes!!!

    • Teehee

For those with the pirated version, all you need to do is just replace the original MSO.dll with the one you unzipped, if you still have it, when you were cracking in, via the microsoft office trial.

    • Simon B

      Great advice !!!

It appears that Microsoft have blacklisted a number of user profiles. Microsoft uses the internet to disable office software for those profiles on the “blacklist”. You may be blacklisted if you have at any time installed a non-licenced piece of software, not necessarily microsoft office software.

The way round this that worked for me was:
      1. Create a new user account with administor access.
      start-> control panel ->user accounts->create a new user account.
      2. Log off, then log on to this account.
      3. Open up all MS office programs, one-by-one, then close them.
      4. Go in to the registry editor
      start->run->type “regedit”->”OK”.
      5. Select various locations such as: h_key_Current_user\software\microsoft\office, and
      h_key_local_machine\software\microsoft\office.
Once each folder is selected, then select: file\export and save a copy of each “key” under an easy to find location, i.e. C: Use different names for each key.
      6. Log off.
      7. Log back on as yourself.
      8. Go to the registry editor, select locations as per above. Go to file\import and import the keys previously saved.

Office programs should now work, but will be blocked again by microsoft over the internet if your profile is on the “blacklist”.

To prevent microsoft re-activating the block via the internet, try going to:
      C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE11 then right click on the MSO.DLL file.
Select “properties -> attributes -> click on “read only”.
(You will need have administrator rights to do this.)
You should also do this to MSO.DLL files under OFFICE12.
After you have done this, consider removing your administrator rights (to better prevent microsoft from interferring over the internet). Do this by going to start-> control panel ->user accounts->change your account type.
You can use the new account created as the administrator account (don’t forget the password and account name of this new account).
This should work for now, but Microsoft will undoubtedly come up with a new way to block the use of your office software if you are on the “blacklist”. An upgrade of your firewall is a good idea. Creating a totally new user profile could also be effective. Not connecting to the internet would also work…..
Once you have everything is working, it is a matter of sitting back and waiting for microsoft’s next move….

      Good luck,
      Simon.

    • kim

None of these fixes worked for me. But I found a solution.

Strangely, this was caused by my anti-virus software. I’m using Dr. Web Spider. For some reason it turned on something call “self-protection.” I guess it was an update to the software or something. Well, it started causing this error and all sorts of problems. I just disabled that setting in Dr. Web and now everything works.

      Go figure.

    • Ahwin

      Worked perfect! :D
