For those that have never used ALZip, it’s a very cute unzipping program. Unlike other unzipping programs, such as 7zip, which uses a folder with the letter that compares to the file type (Z, for zip, 7 for 7z, R for RAR, etc) and WinRAR (which uses a standard set of books), it uses eggs. That’s right, eggs for the icons. If you don’t understand, after the jump I’ve included more screenshots of the program, but right now, is the file icons.

Said Egg Icons
What’s really nice about this program, ALZip is the fact that it handles so much in the ways of files on top of it’s cuteness. It supports ZIP, 7Z, RAR, EGG, TAR, TBZ, LZH, Z, JAR, ALZ, ACE, ARC, ARJ, B64, BH, BHX, BIN, BZ, BZ2, CAB, EAR, ENC, GZ, HA, HQX, ICE, IMG, LHA, MIM, NRG, PAK, TBZ2, TGZ, UUE, UU, WAR, XXE, ISO, LCD, ZOO, for uncompressed and compresses to ZIP, EGG, ALZ, TAR, TBZ, TGZ, LZH, JAR. Yes, you read it right, it compresses to EGG. That would be the new 8.0 alpha that just got released that supports that format, and it’s basically an ultra compressed ZIP file. It’s interface is also darned easy to understand, to say the least, it’s impossible to get lost in the interface.

Now, what’s really nice is that they’re giving a free license away for everyone to celebrate the release of 8.0a. When 8.0 Final releases, they will send out an email with your free license. All you need is an email address that you can check every once in a while. This is a $29.99 value that we’re getting free for the short term, so don’t get greedy now. ALZip works on Windows 2000, XP, Vista, and 7, 32 bit and 64 bit versions interchangeable.
Special thanks to illuminators for posting this on the forum. I’d just like to say that I’ve been playing around with this program for a little bit now, and it’s quite the wonderful little tool, the only thing I wish it would have is a portable version in case I’m at a friend’s house and need to uncompress something. I would recommend this over 7zip only due to the fact of how much it can uncompact. It uses about 75 mb of ram and about half my CPU power to uncompress a 400 mb file and took about two minutes to complete, however, you do have the option to run it as a background task, letting it take less in terms of CPU and RAM. If you ask me, the ease of use and the general feel it has are great, but you get the same performance from 7zip, though a bit longer on the uncompression time, so if you miss this chance to get it for free, 7zip is just as good as ALZip.
