How to add your Hotmail account to Microsoft Outlook

Steve Wiseman from IntelliAdmin has written an excellent tutorial on “How to add your Hotmail account to Microsoft Outlook“.

Any person is able to configure their Microsoft Outlook to receive Hotmail emails with the step by step guide accompanied with graphics.

However, I would like to add in another important requirements before you can start receiving Hotmail emails from your Outlook.


Microsoft requires you to upgrade your normal Hotmail account to MSN Hotmail Plus by subscription.
By paying $19.95 yearly, you’re getting extra storage space with a huge 2 gigabyte (GB) inbox, large file attachments up to 20 megabytes, a cleaner look with no graphical ads for a more streamlined interface and accessing your Hotmail account with Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express.

If you configure your Microsoft Outlook to receive Hotmail without subscription, you will get an error message stating “Task ‘Hotmail: Folder:Inbox Synchronizing headers.’ reported error (0x800CCCF6) : ‘The server responded ‘Access to Hotmail via Outlook or Outlook Express now requires a subscription. Please sign up at http://join.msn.com/general/Email’. ‘

From a comment below, ramdrive said that he was able to use Outlook Express with Hotmail WITHOUT subscription. I tried setting up my Hotmail on my Outlook Express and got the same error message “Access to Hotmail via Outlook and Outlook Express now requires a subscription. Please sign up at http://join.msn.com/general/Email”

Do take note that if you’ve subscribe to the Hotmail Plus account, you’ll have a hard time trying to cancel the subscription. See here on how to cancel your MSN Hotmail Plus subscription.

In summary, you MUST have a MSN Hotmail Plus subscription in order to receive emails from your Hotmail via Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express.

      works fine for me, and i dont have hotmail plus….. i use Outlook Express

      ramdrive, no idea how you got it to work without a subscription.
      Ijust tried setting up Hotmail at Outlook Express and it requires me to signup once I click on the Send/Receive button.

      The trick is to use FreePOPs from http://www.freepops.org
      Set it up as a service and use localhost:2000 as your POP3 server. Sorry, no SMTP.

      The error message is the you cannot use Email Express to access Hotmail anymore. I still can using PopPeeper as can dcro2 using FreePops.

      Therefore I wonder if it requires a crack on Email Express to stop identifying itself as Email Express when it contacts Hotmail?

      If you use your accout before with outlook express before MS do the subscripcion thing , you continue use without problems , if you create you account later or never use outlook express , you get the error.

      MSN Hotmail no longer supports Distributed Authoring and Versioning (DAV) for free user accounts. Outlook Express uses the DAV interface to connect to Hotmail. Only paid Hotmail accounts will work correctly with Outlook Express. If you configured Outlook Express or Outlook to access your Hotmail account before DAV support was ended, you may still be able to use Outlook Express to open a free Hotmail account. However, eventually Hotmail will no longer support DAV for all free Hotmail accounts.

      Steve emailed me a very nice trick on how to receive Hotmail emails using Outlook through forwarding.

      1. Sign up for a gmail account.
      2. Add your hotmail account to your gmail account. (you will receive all your Hotmail email in your gmail account)
      3. Set up your gmail account in outlook.
      4. Receive all your hotmail emails in outlook for free.

      Hi I have a “Hotmail Plus” account which i pay for yearly. Should i be able to use outlook with this account? I have tried setting it up with the connector but it doesnt recognise my account as paid for some reason.
      Any ideas?

      Hi Guys i tried to sign up with Gmail but u have 2 enter ur phone number and u have to be in a location listed and i’m not !! in the FAQ’s it says they are trying to add more countries etc Hope this helps ppl if their stuk erm does any1 no wen they will add more countries ??       Im in the same boat as ramdrive. My hotmail works on my laptop using the beta 2 of Outlook 07 but on my computer i cant get it to work with beta or official 07. How its working, i dont know but it is andi m not complaining about it as long as i dont have to log into windows live mail. hopefully i will be able to figure out why its working in one and not the other

      Just to let you know that I do not have a PAY subscription to hotmail. Just the free basic service. But I have been using outlook 2003 for over 3 years on various computers to get my hotmail I am now using outlook 2007 at home to get my hotmail.
      However I cannot get my wife’s hotmail account to work with either the outlook 2003 or 2007 compter! She too has the basic free service!
      I’m totally baffled as to why I don’t get the error with ‘Payment Required’. I suppose after reading the above I should just be thankful that I get mine with no hassle or cost.

      My Outlook (2003) was working fine but now is not receiving emails at all from my Hotmail Windows Live version. Says

      I am able to send emails from Outlook successfully just not receive them.

      I enabled the second account form gmail, and when i enter the pop3 sever: pop3.live.com port 995 i get an error message “mailbox for mail@live.com is not available.
      Is that the right port or the server, or something else is wrong?

      I paid good money for my frakking Outlook software, and these greedy creeps want me to pay more to be able to use it? SCREW THEM! What a piss-poor way of doing business. I’ll only pick up hacked MS products from now on. Too bad. I always believed in paying for the services before – everything was licensed. Never again. Thanks, MS!       Can’t change from hotmail because all creditcard companys etc have this adress as id.

      it seems that if you have an account for more that 5 years you can access your email using outlook. i have a hotmail account since 1996 and i have no problems at all.

      It’s OBVIOUSLY too complicated. Bloody Outlook Connector as well as Live and Hotmail and different domains. WTF are they thinking?

      If you have outlook 2003 or outlook 2007, you can use the free outlook connector from microsoft to add your hotmail account to outlook

      It fixed the problem I had when Hotmail & MSN stopped working with Outlook 2003. It works perfectly now! You’re the best.
