Create DVD from movieThis is a tutorial written by SpaceGoat on creating DVDs from downloaded movies files. I found this tutorial useful and thought of sharing it out. It is for your knowledge and it doesn’t have to be pirated movie files!

Notes from SpaceGoat:

I have used many, many diferent programs for creating DVDs but these are the programs I aways come back to. This is by no means the only way this can be done.

You will need the programs listed below. As the tutorial goes on, I will explain how each program plays its part.

These two program run in the background all the time.

  • Patin-couffin: is required device I/O interface for various application.
  • AnyDVD: works in the background to automatically remove the copy protection of a DVD movie as soon as it’s inserted into the drive. (Most of the movies you download has the protection removed already)
  • ConvertXtoDVD and Movie DVD Maker are used to turn files into DVD format (VOB) so they can be burn to blank DVDs.

  • ConvertXtoDVD: With this program you can add chapters and a simple start menu. I use it because I like the results. Use this if the movie is in one part.
  • Movie DVD Maker: This is a plain jane output. No chapters. No start menu. Just movie. Can be used to join movie parts (sometimes they are in two or more parts) The thing I don’t like about this program is that it forces you to insert blank DVD before it will start the process. You can eject blank DVD after it starts. I always view final output before burning. The main thing to look for is voice sync. I don’t want to the mouth moving and nothing comes out.
  • DVD X Player 4.0 Pro: Use to view movie files
  • Nero 6 Ultra Edition: You should know what this programs does. For this tutorial it is used so you can burn your DVDs with DVD Shrink.
  • DVD Shrink 3.2: This is one of the best DVD ripping program ever made. You have to have Nero 6 installed to burn DVDs with DVD Shrink 3.2. It will not work with Nero 7 but what does?
  • The above programs are used by SpaceGoat to burn 99% of all his DVDs.

    Making DVDs
    1. Extract file, it will usually be in .avi or DivX format. If its in any other format I don’t waste my time with it. Also if the movie is watermarked, I don’t use it. I don’t want to watch a movie with some lame groups watermark on it.

The file size should be over 700MB and up for better video quality. The idea is to get a good quality DVD so file format and size are important. I HATE wasting blank DVDs!!

    2. You want to view movie to see if its worth burning or not. Lots of Cam movies SUCK. DVD ripped are usually good quality but not always. Always check for visual and sound quality. Make sure voices go with mouth movement. Check in several different places.. For example, the starting, middle and near end of the movie.

    3. You have to turn the files into VOB format to burn to DVD. Use either ConvertXtoDVD or Movie DVD Maker. Both of them will create a folder with the converted files.

    4. Now you use DVD Shrink to burn DVD. Select Open Files, select folder where the converted files were placed. Be sure to burn at the SLOWEST speed your DVD burner will burn. It helps with the final quality of DVD.

    Ripping DVDs
    1. You should have patin-couffin and AnyDVD running

    2. Open DVD Shrink and select Open Disc. You can try to back up the whole DVD if you want to. Look at the compression level. If it is less than 60%, it will not be a good copy. To backup Movie only, select Re-Author. Drag the movie from right window side to the window on left. Select Backup / Select Region Free / Quality Settings- Select both options if not grayed out / Options- Select what you want here / Burn Settings – Enter Volume Name, Select slowest burn speed to help with quality / Click OK.

The above article is the same as the tutorial file which you can download below. The tutorial doesn’t have the download links to the files. So I’ve gone an extra mile to search the download links for you. If you still want to have the tutorial file, you can download below.

I’ve been looking for a way to do this for sooo long and finally found a program that works! I only used ConvertXtoDVD and DVDShrink, they turned out great. I would definately advise using ConvertXtoDVD, the quality turns out great, and you can customize it in many ways (chapters, menu screen, fonts)

      Thank you!

I have been using only nero v7 to convert my avi to dvd. Why do we need to use multiple apps?.

hello Mr. Raymond. I am chewing through all the instructions for creating dvds. I have used the first part of this instruction wonderfully thank you. I think I am getting a little too old to learn all this computer stuff. I managed to fix an avi. file which I downloaded for my daughter beautifully – thank you. When I get to the instructions for dvd shrink – I am totally lost. the page of the link you sent wont open and keeps going round and round in circles without actually going onto the link to download. I found a page which flashed on for only seconds with some other intructions about setting your browsers referrals, but I don’t understand it ! I don’t even know how to write instructions to my zone alarm so please make this answer easy for us old folks who grew up with manual typewriters to understand. many thanks .

      hallo raymond,
i don’t know if i can send in a comment because i haven’t subscribed (yet)
first of all ; nice blog !
second: being dutch i used your dutch translation to read your article,
it was extremely funny but not very dutch if you like i can have a go at it.
but that is not the reason for this comment the reason is that there is
a very simple program for converting downloaded movies to DVD.
i use DVD flick for converting and the buildin IMG burning for the burning.
it only takes a few clicks and you can lean back and take it easy while
      the program does its work.
only downside is that it takes a lot op cpu power.
now i am going to read the rest of your blog,
      greetings from holland,
      g.bos

I BURNED THEM ON DVD, BUT DID NOT WORK. I AM DOING SOMETHING WRONG IN THE FILES FINAL PART DO I SELECT ALL THE CONVERTED FILE OR JUST ONE FILE AND WHICH ONE IS IT ????

I have ripped dvd files (VTS) which I want to combine and convert into a single video file so that they can be viewed on a PC.
Have previously, successfully used Windows Movie Maker that came with XP SP2.
This has become corrupt all attempts to unistall and reinstall have failed.
      Can you suggest an alternative.
