It seems weird why such a big company Microtek with 25 years of Digital Imaging Excellence provides such a confusing and non complete driver updates for a scanner which I tried to install today.
I tried to install Microtek ScanMaker 5800 on an Apple G5 running with Mac OS X 10.4.5.

I plugged in the A/C power and turned on the power, there is no light on the LED. I thought that there was a problem with the power output on the socket so I changed to another power socket. Still the same thing!
Perhaps Microtek made is such way for some reasons. I then plugged in the USB cable and nothing happened. It doesn’t detect and install like in Windows XP where you’ll see an icon on the traybar stating that it found a new device.
I then check Mac’s System Profiler and looked at the USB, and there listed ScanMaker 5800.
So it confirms that it’s able to detect my scanner but still couldn’t function without drivers.
I went to Microtek’s driver download website to look for Mac OS drivers and thank God it has the drivers.
After looking closely at the list, it doesn’t seem to have ScanMaker 5800 driver for Mac OS X 10.4.5. However, it only has driver for Mac OS 10.2 ~ 10.3 which is ScanWizard 5 v7.22.
It can risk my Apple Mac OS X 10.4.5 system being corrupted if I install the old ScanWizard 5 v7.22 for Mac OS 10.2 ~ 10.3.
Tried searching for a solution in Google, but couldn’t find any article on this.
So to play safe, I downloaded ScanWizard 5 v7.53 which is suppose to support Mac OS 10.3.x ~ 10.4.x but not for ScanMaker 5800. Installed it, ran ScanWizard, and error popup saying that it could not detect any scanner!
I thought that MAYBE I could install the old version of ScanWizard v7.22 which has ScanMaker 6800 drivers, and then upgrade it to ScanWizard 5 v7.53. Theoretically, I would use ScanWizard v7.22 DRIVERS and then use ScanWizard v7.53 APPLICATION to scan. This is the step.
1. Download ScanWizard 5 v7.22
2. Mount and install the .pkg for ScanWizard v7.22
3. Download ScanWizard 5 v7.53
4. Mount and install the .pkg for ScanWizard v7.53
Crossed my fingers and run ScanWizard…… and it works! I can hear the scanner warming up and functioning.
P/S: It may sound simple and logic to just update the software and driver but for a Mac newbie, you wouldn’t want to do things that are not stated in vendor’s website. Microtek should at least write a small note stating that the software must be upgraded in order to use ScanWizard with ScanMaker 5800.
i know this post is at least 4 years old, but i found it via google. your solution works for my macbook pro os 10.4.11 and scanmaker 5800. i did have to do what BudN suggests, which is reinstalled/upgraded the earlier version AFTER installing both, it worked. i did a test scan and everything works beautifully. thank you so much!
Hurray – it works ! (Snow Leopard 10.6.5)
that means:
- you can’t bash mikrotek too much – they DID bring out a working version of scanwizard
- but dont follow their “search for product” menu – this will get you 7.22 which is not working with the white cat (snow leopard)
- IAN must have been out of luck. As per today, the link posted by Hadi (repeated in my previous post) is working and gets you ScanWizard5 Version 7.7.1 for Max
- This Scanner was also sold in Germany by a discounter (ALDI) , relabeled as TEVION 2400 DPI.
(adding this note for all others who searched in vain so far)
Seems strange to dig out such an old post,
but got the same issue here – brand new iMac (OSX 10.6.5.) and the “old” 5800 Mikrotek Scanner.
Went through Mikrotek menus first, downloaded version 7.22 of the software -> crashed (only the scan software, not the OS).Then found a hint to their version 7.71 => support.microtek.com/downloads/drv_specific.phtml?slct_os=20&prod=30&bymdlnme=1
just downloading ..let’s see where this gets us at.
no encuentro ke nesesito para intalar el scanmaker 3750i me ayudan
I can’t acces this last URL at all, and I was also wondering if this hopeless company had gotten around to updating its drivers to work with Apple’s current OS.
My 5800 scanner has sat in the box for nearly three years. What a waste of money, and plastic.
The driver for which you’re looking can be downloaded here:

Good Luck!
Hi, I’ve got a Mac OS X 10.5.5, and was wondering if there was a similar method to this for the same model of scanner, or an alternative program available? I’ve tried VueScan, but it’s incompatible with the ScanMaker 5800 and Silverfast only supports the later models of microtek scanners D:
Any help at all would be much appreciated :(
我完全看不懂你的@#$%^&*
翻譯如此差勁居然能貼在網站!!!
Perfect! This scanner has been sitting useless to me for a year! Thanks for the help!! Works great now…
I would also like to thank you. I was in the same boat. Found your page on Google. One difference in my case though. I tried the order you suggested, for some reason it didn’t take. But after the newer version was installed I reinstalled “upgraded” to the older version and it worked. Actually the newer version was still installed and thats what i run, but when i “installed/upgraded” to the older version the drivers must have been put in the right place. iBook G4 12 inch, OSX 10.4.9, 768MB
THANK YOU!!!!!
I bought a Mac Mini – running 10.4.10 and of course none of the Microtek info indicated that I could use my (old) ScanMaker 5800 with the available drivers … I found your page … followed your instructions … and my scanner instantly came to life!!!!
Running some test scans now but she’s just purring like crazy.
I am actually kind of (pleasntly) surprised that it works.
Thanx again,
John R.
