Kaspersky Offers FREE Rescue Disk To Clean Virus Without Booting in Windows

Some virus are very destructive or badly coded until it affects Windows stability. One of the worst thing that could happen is you’re unable to boot in to Windows and not even Safe Mode. That makes it harder for tech people to troubleshoot the problem and ended up in reformatting the hard drive to reinstall Windows. Last year I written a guide on how to clean or remove virus when you can’t boot in to Windows using Hiren’s BootCD.

However, Hiren’s BootCD only has F-Prot and McAfee dos based antivirus, which I personally think that it is not strong or smart enough to detect and remove some viruses. The only antivirus program that I can put my trust on is Kaspersky.

Good news is Kaspersky has started offering Rescue Disk to scan and remove virus on computer without the need of booting in to Windows.

Kaspersky Rescue Disk offers a safe way to remove viruses from a computer without the risk of getting infected. Boot from the Kaspersky Rescue Disk to scan and remove threats from an infected computer without the risk of infecting other files or computers. All you need to do is the download the ISO file, burn the ISO image to a CD, insert it into the infected system’s CD-ROM drive, enter the PC’s BIOS, set it to boot from the CD and reboot the computer.

Here’s the detailed step-by-step on how to use Kaspersky Rescue Disk.
1. Download Kaspersky Rescue Disk ISO.

2. Burn the ISO with your CD/DVD burning software. If you don’t have one, you can use ImgBurn. You can follow the guide on this page on how to burn ISO to a CD using ImgBurn.

3. After finished burning Kaspersky Rescue Disk to CD, insert the CD to your CD/DVD-ROM, and boot up your computer with it.

4. You will get a screen that looks like below. Hit the ENTER key to start booting the Anti-Virus using linux.
Boot up Kaspersky Rescue Disk

5. Once everything is loaded, the latest Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2009 will load. Simple check the hard drives that you want to scan and click Start scan.
Kaspersky Rescue Disk Anti-Virus

Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2009 or Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 allows you to create your own Recue Disk. Open KAV or KIS, click SCAN, choose Create Rescue Disk. Just follow the instruction and you will have your own made Rescue Disk. However, the rescue disk that you create from Kaspersky is different from the one that you download from Kaspersky website. The one that you create from Kaspersky software is designed to restore system functionality after a virus attack that damaged system files of the operating system and made it impossible to startup and to be used only on the computer that it was created on. Using the disk on other computers could lead to unforeseeable consequences, since it contains information about the parameters of a specific computer.

As for Kaspersky Rescue Disk that you download from Kaspersky website, it is like an on-demand virus scanner that allows you to scan and remove virus without booting in Windows. When Windows is running, virus are active and sometimes it is tough to remove them. So the most effective way of removing virus is when they are inactive.

      Hi Raymond…

I have a problem with trojan and i am using Kaspersky Internet security 2009.. Though it detects “trjoan downloader.js.multi.ca” in my C drive( internet temp files)… it still cant remove them ,,, its so annoying that the kaspersky pop up comes up every 1 mints showing that a trojan is detected.. i tried booting in safe mood and run all those sypware/anitvirus i have but in vain.. i also tried using weebroot spy sweeper .. spy boy , spy terminator , ad awre 2008 and spy doctor( starter edition) none of them detects any trojan … i tried the trial version of XSoft SE spyware .. though it detected all the trojans.. i was not able to delete them as it was a trial version..

Need ur help badly..please help me …

      Hello Raymond!

I found one virus with the boot-CD wich Kaspersky on Windows not detect??

But now the virus is away…

      Big “Thank you”

    • http://www.raymond.cc/ Raymond

@andrew & Gaurav: I think it should be possible to update the definition. You’ll need to edit the ISO file, replace the definition with a newer one and burn it to CD.

@Tjoakim: As for making it the CD to become a USB bootable, I’ve written article on how to make a USB bootable before. It works but it has a lot of compatibility problems.

Just a few weeks ago, my friend ‘s computer at work caught a virus and the tech’s just decided to reformat the hard drive saying there’s nothing else that could be done.
I even saw them work! They didn’t even try.
      Next time I’ll use this.

    • http://www.raymond.cc/ Raymond

@Ganesh: Yes, Kaspersky Rescue Disk removes virus from NTFS hard drive partition.

    • Ganesh Nadar

while scanning with this rescue cd when it comes to 21percent my pc gets shut down. why?

    • Kevin

This rescue disk is not official though

    • SMArt

2Tjoakim: This CD built with gentoo linux image. If you know what is syslinux, there are no problems for you. Make your flash-disk bootable. Copy all files (even two 0-sized files from root of CD), don’t forget about directory “bases” Copy pxelinux.cfg to syslinux.cfg on your usb-flash. But in “append” string change cdboot to cdboot=/dev/sd[a-z][0-9]. Good luck.

PS It doesn’t understand russian letters in file and directory names. So it simply skips them. :(
PPS Sorry for bad English. It’s not my native language.

It’s not working. :-( The isolinux shuts the computer down after the kaspersky prompt line is shown. And I dont know what to write when running in the secure mode, since I’m not a linux geek.

      Hi, Raymond!
Thanks a lot for this. I hope it works for our MSI Wind. It came with a proprietary disc, so if I use it we will certainly loose everything that is in it.
I might need a step by step guide for pre-beginners, though, but I\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\’ll give it a go b/c my daughter\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\’s laptop died on her and won\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\’t even boot up in safe mode (not that I would know what to do if it did…)
Now, let\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\’s say I am able to figure out what to do and it works, will the computer be able to boot as it used to once it\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\’s free from viruses? If not, what is the next step? How do I get it back running?
      Thanks so much in advance!

      hello…
I use the rescue cd to scan a friend’s computer.
I can’t connect automatically to the internet (need manually to set the IP as well as login & password) so when i need to update the obsolete database, I couldn’t connect…
In the menu there is this “proxy setting” but I don’t know what and how to set it (if that’s what I need to set, I’m not even sure) and really have googled endlessly….
so anyone has experience facing such problem? I’d be grateful for a good feedback :D

I downloaded several other linux antivirus cd’s and this is the only one that worked, albeit the linux screen was really hard to see on my lcd. Thanks for the post, I was beginning to lose hope.

I have avast (home version) installed and thought avast was fantastic and my pc was clean so was happily going to various sites offering “free” downloads! Well that’ll teach me! My pc is riddled with Win32.Vitro, Win32.Virut.56 and various others! Anyway after 15 hours of scanning the antivirus software is still finding virus in files I though were clean. I download Dr.Web cureit and it has been running for nearly 5 hours now (ok, I do have nearly 800k files on my pc). Following the advice on this site I am going to download Kaspersky rescue disk and run that. Once I know its all clean I will then have to spend another 5 hours reinstalling winodws xp again (as win32.vitro has well and trully screwed it up) and applying updates and then run all the antivirus scans again which will probably take the whole of the weekend! After which I will have to install all the other software that use and apply updates to those. What a bummer!! Well, thats what comes of using “free” software (and we all knbow what free means). Good luck to all who sail down thye free download path!

Thanks Ray, you r the best ..,

    • Jennifer

The rescue disk would not work for me. So I downloaded the trial version of the Kaspersky Anti Virus Software to a CD from another computer.

I booted up the infected computer and a ran the CD with the Kaspersky software and downloaded it… scanned my pc and Kaspersky found several problems and I was able to fix them all! It even fixed the EVIL screen saver!!! My task manager is back and my computer is sailing along better than it has in a long long time!

Just so you understand… I could not download any other virus software. I tried several, including: smitfraudfix, HijackThis, OneCare.live.com, Windows Virus Scan, etc.. The virus would cancel my downloads! But Kaspersky worked!!!!

I am so HAPPY I am going to go purchase Kaspersky at Costco, since it is on sale for $25 the month of Feb.

THANK YOU RAYMOND!! You Helped Save my Computer!

    • lee

      great work!

    • Andy

If one creates the rescue disk, then uses it say 6 months later, would it be likely to clean the pc?

If not, what do you recommend.

      Thanks

    • Mustapha Ibrahim

      Awesome :)

    • Allan Levy

The Kaspersky boot disk that I created using my computer did not even get into Kaspersky(on the same computer), the one I downloaded off the net worked, but I need newer definitions, so it would be nice if I could update the boot disk.
