The Kaspersky boot disk that I created using my computer did not even get into Kaspersky(on the same computer), the one I downloaded off the net worked, but I need newer definitions, so it would be nice if I could update the boot disk.

If one creates the rescue disk, then uses it say 6 months later, would it be likely to clean the pc?

If not, what do you recommend.

Thanks

The rescue disk would not work for me. So I downloaded the trial version of the Kaspersky Anti Virus Software to a CD from another computer.

I booted up the infected computer and a ran the CD with the Kaspersky software and downloaded it... scanned my pc and Kaspersky found several problems and I was able to fix them all! It even fixed the EVIL screen saver!!! My task manager is back and my computer is sailing along better than it has in a long long time!

Just so you understand... I could not download any other virus software. I tried several, including: smitfraudfix, HijackThis, OneCare.live.com, Windows Virus Scan, etc.. The virus would cancel my downloads! But Kaspersky worked!!!!

I am so HAPPY I am going to go purchase Kaspersky at Costco, since it is on sale for $25 the month of Feb.

THANK YOU RAYMOND!! You Helped Save my Computer!

I have avast (home version) installed and thought avast was fantastic and my pc was clean so was happily going to various sites offering "free" downloads! Well that'll teach me! My pc is riddled with Win32.Vitro, Win32.Virut.56 and various others! Anyway after 15 hours of scanning the antivirus software is still finding virus in files I though were clean. I download Dr.Web cureit and it has been running for nearly 5 hours now (ok, I do have nearly 800k files on my pc). Following the advice on this site I am going to download Kaspersky rescue disk and run that. Once I know its all clean I will then have to spend another 5 hours reinstalling winodws xp again (as win32.vitro has well and trully screwed it up) and applying updates and then run all the antivirus scans again which will probably take the whole of the weekend! After which I will have to install all the other software that use and apply updates to those. What a bummer!! Well, thats what comes of using "free" software (and we all knbow what free means). Good luck to all who sail down thye free download path!
