Kick XP Mode Up A Notch By Allowing It More RAM!

For those of us that are using Windows 7 and have a Professional or higher edition, Microsoft has kindly included a Windows XP Mode to download and install applications that don’t fully work in Windows 7. While I admit, I’ve use the XP Mode for some things, for most things, I haven’t had to touch it, because of the fact that the mass majority of my stuff works in Windows 7 fine, plus the fact that Windows 7′s XP Mode is just a glorified virtual machine with Windows XP pre-installed. But aside from that, it does work very well at what it does. Recently, it was updated to not require hardware virtualization so I downloaded it and tried it out on my laptop, which is running enough RAM to allow for XP mode for be pretty fast… or so I thought.

The default background and setup before I started poking around.

Instead, when I finally got it up and loaded, it was rather slow. And when I say slow, I mean it managed to make Windows Vista look surprisingly fast on this laptop. (For those that are wondering how fast it really was, the average boot for my computer, optimized, was 2 minutes. Windows 7 takes about 45 seconds. Not top of the line, but no slouch either.) So to say the least, I wasn’t too thrilled with it taking it’s own sweet time. Rather then just grin and bear with it, considering it was a freebie from Microsoft, I decided to do some poking around with it, as well as looking up some more advanced tips, and found a major time saving tip for those of us that use the Virtual XP Mode.

The major thing you must know is that the Virtual XP in the articles I’ve been reading, claim, and have been backed up by my testing in that it only uses 512 MB of RAM, no matter how much or how little RAM you have in your computer. Since I’m got 3 Gigs in my computer, I thought it might be wiser to provide about a third of my RAM, or 1 Gig to the Virtual Machine. So to change this, we have to go to:

C:\Users\Hell Noire\Virtual Machines

and right click on the Virtual Machine. Since I am only using the one operating system in a VM, I only had one, but if you’re using more then one, be sure to choose the proper one, which should be named Windows XP Mode.vmcx and select the Settings option. Under that, there should be a Memory tab/setting for you to modify to allow for more RAM to be used.

Now, I’m assuming your username isn’t ‘Hell Noire’, and if that’s the case, change that to suit your username. But once I modified it to run at 1 Gig of RAM, it was actually pretty quick and booted and shut down quicker.
The one thing I’d like to add is if you are using Virtual XP Mode, you might want to look into using a free antivirus, like AVG, Avira, Panda Cloud, or Avast for protecting your virtual machine from viruses as well. Overall, I still haven’t had much use or need to use XP Mode, but for those of us that are still wondering how to use MS Office 2003 and Final Fantasy 7 on the new systems, XP Mode’s one of the best ways how.

I have a doubt, Right click on the program exe file, or installation program, click on Properties, click on the compatibility tab, check the run this program in compatibility mode for box and select xp from drop down menu. What about this method? why use Virtual XP Mode when we have this method?

    • Paul\HellNoire

@Varun, because it doesn’t always work… Microsoft Office 2003 will not work in compatibility mode, nor will FF7. There are a few other applications too, but they are rare, I admit.

Great tip. I have a program that only works in XP which loads MP3s to my Phatbox. Program won’t run in compatibility mode so I was using XP mode so I don’t need to have two pcs. Bumping up the ram has made everything run much faster in XP mode which saves time. Many thanks.

      I have a question Paul,

I already done the increase of ram to my Win 7 Pro laptop (before I even read this). But is there anyway to make it use 32bit colour instead of the horrible 16bit. There seems to be no option for 32-bit colour. Maybe it is not meant to be, but I would want full colour quality.

    • Paul\HellNoire

@Dradolan, I assume you’re referring to the same thing I am here, XP Mode. If you go to Tools, and disable integration, it should allow you to jump to 32 bit mode, but I’m not using XP Mode for much except to make sure some of the things I’m posting are reverse compatible for XP.

is there anyway to enable hardware acceleration on vm in order to run some light 3d games which are not compatable with windows 7

    • Paul\HellNoire

@tausef, to be honest, I doubt it. It is a VM… but I seriously have doubts. You could Google and find out though.

    • jcym

@tausef, XP Mode doesn’t support hardware acceleration but VMware WorkStation and Player and Sun’s Virtualbox now have support for 3D acceleration. Though I don’t know how good they are, not having tried them with 3D enabled. Google is your friend :).

i’d rather stay with plain old win7. speakin of virtualbox… u need to install a seprate os…. i dont wanna take all that headache of installing.

      Paul,

I have an old printer that the drivers will only work in XP. So I tried the XP mode and it still didn’t work. But I found out that you can run Windows XP Mode.vmcx under VMPlayer. The printer works fine now. Also serial and USB ports and just about anything else works under VMPlayer and it’s easy to change memory size and also have a common folder with Win 7. To see how to use Windows XP Mode.vmcx under VMPlayer just Google it. After VMPlayer converts XP Mode, you can now use this VMPlayer appliance under just about any OS that runs VMPlayer, even Linux. So now you have a Free Windows XP for Linux or the Mac.

    • Paul\HellNoire

@vikas, considering it’s just an addon to Windows 7 you install like any other Windows Update or any other installer, there is no hassle for installing XP Mode unless you aren’t happy with the Microsoft VM.

@Dan, I’ve used VMPlayer and I’ve used VirtualBox. I still prefer VirtualBox every time, and it’s because I sense a speed difference…. but that might just be me.

Also, that would be breaking the EULA of Microsoft if you do so, so I wouldn’t recommend you going around and spreading that idea too much… otherwise, you are going to be sued.

      n thnx dude….

    • Anyware

      Hi,

Even though I have 3 Giga of RAM on Win 7 and I change the RAM on VM to be 1 Giga running Win XP; typing a url address, or using digits on some applications that are not yet compatible with Windows 7 is very slow.
Is there any way to speed up typing in Win XP virtual mode?

    • Paul\HellNoire

@Anyware, you need a half decent machine to run it quickly. It’s why I can’t use VMs much myself… I don’t have one.

    • Tauseef

Paul i am looking forward for a comparative review of all virtualization software available in market both free and paid.Like virtual box vmware parallel. It will be great if you could.

    • Paul\HellNoire

@Tauseef, when I get my new computer, I was thinking that would be one of the first things I would do.
