Since MacOS X is evolving, so is the amount of softwares…
There is already memory testing software for linux and dos, now Tony Scaminaci has ported the open-source Memtest command line utility originally authored by Charles Cazabon to test memory on Linux platforms to Max OS X.
Besides providing support for the latest Intel-based Macs, Memtest for Mac OS X version 4.13 also adds improved status reporting for each of the individual tests. This gives the user a better perspective on the amount of time remaining to complete each of the tests which is especially useful for the longer ones. The User’s Guide has been updated with additional information frequently requested by users.
PPC G5 Macs running 10.4 or later run in 64-bit mode, allowing virtually any amount of installed ram to be tested. All other systems run in 32-bit mod, limiting testable memory to 4 GB.
Since Memtest OS X 4.13 is best used as a command line program in single-user mode, it could pose a problem for newbie. The best is to always have a GUI version of it. Thanks to Edward Kelley from Kelly Computing, he has developed a front-end GUI to the ‘memtest’ command line memory testing program. This will allow the user to select the number of test loops, as well as the amount of memory to test. There is a ‘Log’ tab that will allow the user to monitor memory testing. The user can toggle a ‘verbose’ switch to limit the amount of output. Allows user to quit Finder and other applications.
