I pride myself on being one that doesn’t use warez and will download from Rapidshare and Megaupload only if a Linux distro or a legal source of information is only available that way or if it’s faster that way. And seeing as sometimes, a distribution’s site is overwhelmed by people trying to download it, like Ubuntu, or has no official download anymore because it has been discontinued, like Yggdrasil Linux, it has grown to be a necessity for my connection. It is only at these times that anyone would catch me downloading from direct downloads, rather then official sites. And until recently, I was using FreeRapid because of the wide selection that it was able to download from. Then when I decided to download a copy of Debian 5.04 that was hosted on Hotfile, I was facing an dilemma: for some reason or another, when I tried downloading it, it wouldn’t work. Instead, it crashed and wouldn’t allow for any more downloads from FreeRapid. I could email the makers of FreeRapid or post on their forum, I admit, but I figured I might switch to a new application that would be quicker then to get it fixed. And it just so happens that I found one that I will be writing about today.
MiPony is a small application, weighing in at about 5 mb once installed without the toolbar but once installed, you’ll find a lot of extra features that make it more powerful then FreeRapid to make up for the lack of add-ons to download from. The first thing you might notice is the fact that it has a browser built right into it. Yes, it’s Internet Explorer based, but I’ve never seen anything like it in all the time I’ve use FreeRapid. This browser will allow for instant downloading when you click on any supported link, including Rapidshare, Mediafire, Hotfile, MegaUpload, DepositFile, Uploading, Storage.to, FileFactory, and EasyShare. It also supports Premium accounts for the above, so if you’re lucky enough to get or win one, you can use it in this application, though it does support more then 45 different sites aside from these. It also supports file joining and unraring files automatically once the downloads are done as well as putting in the passwords for the files, on top of shutting down the computer once the downloads are done. It also supports the standard FreeRapid working of monitoring the clipboard to watch for files to download. It’s options are clear and easy to use as well as making it an extremely powerful downloader application.

If you do a lot of downloading via direct links like Rapidshare and Megaupload, I would still recommend FreeRapid over any other, due to the fact that it works on every operating system that can run Java and it’s wide plugin base, but if you’re looking for one that is a very powerful replacement because FreeRapid somehow failed, MiPony is definitely a program to look into. MiPony needs the .NET framework to work but works on my slow laptop, so I imagine if you have a recent Windows OS, it should be able to work fine.

If only FRD allows archiving of links through flagging as downloaded/complete (even if the plugin doesn’t work), it would be the best among the rest !! I really liked how FRD works among the 2, the confirmation to add a link through clipboard sniffing is very much appreciated, unlike both Jdownloader and Mipony. Mipony though is somewhat better than Jdownloader but I don’t use it XD.
I’ve tested, FRD, JD, MiPony and MDownloader, and I see that everyone has pros and cons.
JD is too heavy, and more hard to use than the others…
MiPony got problems with some plugins…
FRD too.
Now I’m using JD, because hotfile is not working with MiPony 1.0.12, so JD isn’t working with badongo… 30 MB for the same problem with differente hosts…
Now I’m downloading FRD again, maybe I’ll use it again… But after MiPony I don’t know if I will back to FRD.
Thank you for mention this programs.
I like alternatives :)
I’m using Mipony for 6 months now, it works great & also updates frequently.
mipony & Jdownloader both sucked my brain because
1)mipony –many times lost connectins during downloads,
the inbuilt browser alaways comes up whwn u start it.this irritates me.
2)jdownloader—it eats ur brain..alaways goes to update
showing plugin out of date errrs.
i suggest freerapid as it has stood upto my expectations, clipboard monitoring is awsome,it updates plug-ins quickly.is portable, interface is very neat & clean,. new plug-ins are being added frequently.
i see it overtaking the other 2 in short time.
so guys those who hav ‘nt please check it out.i am sure u will praise it.
@rickxs
IDM does, you can download Rapidshare links (and some other sites) after the wait time, using its own browser plugin or Flashgot (for Firefox).
I’m not talking about automatic download, but it will download – period
I think JDownloader is much better coz It’s support all filesharing sites..
there’s a bit of confusion here
Download manger’s wont download when you are a free user – period
JD is facing a problem of the plugins not keeping up to the changes of Filefactory & others changing the script on their pages daily
nice one Hellnoire.i was searching for an exact application like this one.
Thanks, Paul.
Besides using JDownloader, I never know about this software before.
Might give a try to this.
Cheers
i would like to see a post on different download managers and their comparisons .
including DAP as well as rapidshare/.. / downloaders
i have been using mipony for quite sometime now
but it has it’s own cons if compared to manual downloads
once the file which i was downloading was 100mb(99.6 mb complete) but something happened and it showed download error and then that file was gone!.
i think mipony waits longer than manual download.
so if it is a medium length file then i suppose u go for manual dwnld instead of mipony .
as far as jdownloader is concerned never used it so i don’t know about it exactly.
@nders, I might. No promises.
I used to use MiPony too when JD is not stable. but now i tried the new JD, i scrapped MiPony directly. Give JD a try Paul :D
@file1854, like I said above, I might. I don’t download warez and I often use the official sites, so I don’t often use something like this.
@Grr, it does make you wait as long as the free waiting period is, but it does make it come down the pipe faster, like Raymond’s post on downloading while you sleep.
Thanks for the share Paul.
Does it auto downloads for free users also without any waiting period?
I like JDownloader. Works pretty good. Might try MiPony
A review/comparasion of different download managers would be really useful. Some like Jdownloader, Cryptload, MiPony, IDM… Compare the speeds, features, memory usage…
Thanks
I also like JDownloader and use it on both a number of free sites and a couple of premium accounts. But it’s always useful to have another tool in the box just in case, so thanks Paul/HellNoire.
Ublaze, just disable auto checking of updates and do it manually when you feel like it using the Earth Globe Icon on the Toolbar. Go to Settings/General and Uncheck ‘WebUpdate: start automatically’. You can also Check ‘Don’t inform me about important updates’ if you prefer, though I personally leave that enabled so I know when something is available but actually update when convenient.
Hi,
if I have to download from RS I use Internet Download Manager and SkipScreen (FF extension) combo. It works like a charm!
Cheers, vas
@mafia87, if it catches my eye, then sure. But at present… I’d have to shelve that idea because I’ve got a few others to write about. I write mostly about applications that have caught my eye so I can’t really go out of my way and lie to people to say “yeah, this app’s cool since XYZ recommended it to me and I’ve never used it.”
@Blue, I’ll disagree but that’s because I enjoy using DownThemAll/FreeRapid. Yes, it’s not as fast as the ones you recommend but the fact it runs under Linux and Windows makes me use it as the standard on my systems. If I can keep a standard between Linux and Windows, I use it. In the end though… my review really is nothing because if you’re not happy using it, there’s more where that came from.
@Mystique, indeed and as you said, in the end it’s up to you to decide what you’d like to use. You can use any of them, and I admit, MiPony needs work done on it. I loved FreeRapid for the updating of plugins not requiring the update of the actual program and when it worked, it worked very well. If FreeRapid had worked for me, then I would have recommended that today, but like we’re both saying: in the end, use what you think is best.
Thanks Paul\HellNoire
You have introduced a great application today. It is doing very well for me. I have installed it permanently as I have to download a lot from rapidshare and hotfile. It is fast and stable and uses around 31 MB RAM (OK for me!). It is compatible with KIS 2011 too.
Regards
There are a multitude of these downloaders appearing and this is just one of them, I have been testing MiPony for quite some time now, it is lighter than jdownloader and FreeRapid (both Java based downloaders) it does lack some features.
MiPony does not have a plugin based system and therefore needs a complete update every single time I hoster decides to make some changes, its hardly elegant or efficient but i guess it comes down to user preference really.
I felt the browser was just another attempt by the developer to make some money by having its website as default which featured google ads not a huge problem but I do hate the toolbar option but at least it isn’t foisted upon us and remains an option.
According to the website MiPony is capable of being integrated within firefox via flashgot however I have never been able to get it to work… user error perhaps but for this user it hasn’t worked.
- Mdownloader (very simple downloader that works with a few webhost, Mdownloader requires .net to function)
- Tucan Downloader (python based, plugin module based, alpha development)
- Crypt Loader (the fabled v2 is still pending a release and is much anticipated as it was once a major contender to Jdownloader the beast of file host downloaders and for many it still is a top contender, crypt loader is being redeveloped from .net to C programming language and will feature a load of new features many seen in other downloaders such as Jdownloader)
Best of download manager
for free “http” download you can use
1.Freedownload Manager
2.Flashget
For “hotfile,rapid” you can use
1.JDOWNLOADER
2.Cryptload
If you have any premium account, just stick with IDM, it’s the best download manager available.. But if you downloads using free account, better use JDownloader.. If u using an older computer, give Mipony a try, you gonna find it lighter.. Paul, how bout give JDownloader a try and post a review here… :) Ray have mentioned bout it in the past but never post a detail review of ‘these file-hosting download manager’.
I have tried many downloaders for file hosting servers , but like everyone said Jdownloader is really heavy and most of the time it keeps on getting new updates which is really irritating , in that case even though i haven’t tries Mipony its sounds better . but i always prefer IDM coz its light , reliable and much more faster if ur lucky enuf to have rs premium Lolz :)
I used to use this or JDownloader for my MediaFire downloads, however neither seems to work for mediafire lately.
Can anyone confirm that it works now?
@dino, it’s the poor man’s version of a premium account. You put the links in, and it auto-downloads it for you.
@mafia87, I’ve never used JDownloader, I’ve used FreeRapid until it gave me a hard time. Then it was to MiPony.
@res, no, you can’t. It was built using .NET so you need the .NET framework, like the post says.
@Lance, sorry I didn’t reply to you with Ali, JDownloader, like I said is another option. I’ve never used it myself, using FreeRapid and then going to MiPony. But everyone makes their own choices.
Can i use mipony without installing .net framework?
I’ve been using Jownloader for a long time… But about 3 months ago, switched to Mipony because there’s good review posted about the software. Mipony doesn’t have a lot of features but if you want a simple JDownloader, use Mipony, it supports a lot file hosting site and the capcha feature is as great as JDownloader.. But most of all, it use light of source of my OS… Thanks for the review paul… :)
i dont understand much about this application…btw..im using IDM to download all the rapidshare link…n im using premium acc…
about this FreeRapid and MiPony…is it like the IDM? or it is a program to bypass the rapidshare premium requirement? so i can use premium download without premium acc???
@Ali, is another option. I haven’t seen many people try or review MiPony. I figure this would give it a good test and it worked for me. Whatever works for you is good enough for you… there is no one size fits all.
I use Jdownloader for my needs and it’s java based. It’s pretty resource heavy(around 50-70 megs) but it also gets the job done for me. It supports a whole lot of file-hosting sites as well. I’ll overlook this product in the near future but other than that, I’m sticking with jdownloader for a while.
Jdownloader? :P
