One of my favorite free tool that I always carry around with me in my USB flash drive is CPU-Z. Whenever I need to check the computer’s hardware information such as CPU, mainboard and memory, I’d use CPU-Z first. The reason it has became one of my favorite tool is because it’s portable, small and easy to use. Just run the program and it will display what you want to see.

CPU-Z developer has developed a new software called “HWMonitor“.

It is also free, small, portable and easy to use.


HWMonitor is a hardware monitoring program that reads PC systems main health sensors : voltages, temperatures, fans speed. The program handles the most common sensor chips, like ITE IT87 series, most Winbond ICs, and others. In addition, it can read modern CPUs on-die core thermal sensors, as well has hard drives temperature via S.M.A.R.T, and video card GPU temperature. Special hardware monitors such as abit uGuru and Gigabyte ODIN power supplies series are supported too.

I’ve tested it on my laptop and it’s only able to read my hard drive temperature. But on my desktop, it is able to read my CPU, SYSTEM, graphics card and hard drive temperature. It is also able to display the voltages and also fan speed. You can also save the information to a text file which contains some information such as mainboard vendor and model, and processor information that is not displayed in HWMonitor.

HWMonitor version 1.0.5.8 is their first release, so don’t expect it to support a lot of sensor chips. Give it a little more time and I believe it’ll turn into something as useful as CPU-Z.
