I got to know about a free software called Mouse without Borders from the ShareMouse comment posted by slorkluk. Basically Mouse without Borders is another software that is similar to Input Director, Synergy and ShareMouse where you can use a single keyboard and mouse to control multiple computers by moving the mouse pointer from one screen to another just like they are connected to each other. The good thing about having so many alternatives is we get to choose which is more suitable and works best for our setup. You can view the embedded short video introduction on Mouse without Borders.
To get Mouse without Borders working, you will have to install the application on every computer that you want to connect. It has a limitation of controlling only up to a maximum of four computers which I think is probably enough for most people. I have 2 desktops with 2 laptops in my study room and very seldom I need to turn them all on at the same time.
After installation, you will be asked if you have already installed Mouse without Borders on another computer. If you click No, you will have to note down the given security code with the computer name because you have to enter that piece of information on the other computer. All computers connected via Mouse without Borders must use the same security code.

Now on the next computer, install Mouse without Borders, click Yes, enter the security code and the other computer’s name which you have noted down earlier and click the LINK button. Click the Next button when it says success and followed by clicking the Done button. Now the two computers are connected and you can start moving your mouse cursor to the end of the monitor which will automatically jump to the next monitor.
Mouse without Borders supports copy files from one computer to another by simply dragging and dropping to another screen. The files are automatically stored in a folder named MouseWithoutBorders for easy identification. You can also copy and paste across computers which is useful when you have to install a shareware that requires to enter a very long serial number. Another unique feature is the ability to send and get screen capture between the connected computers. Do note that the screen captures are automatically saved to C:\Program Files\MouseWithoutBorders\ScreenCaptures\ folder. The feature that I like most about Mouse without Borders is the ability to control all connected computer simultaneously by pressing the CTRL key three times. This allow me to easily lock all computers by pressing WIN+L when I am in ALL PC mode.
From the settings (right click Mouse without Borders icon at notification area), you can change the security key, re-arrange the location of the computers, configure keyboard shortcuts, blocking screen saver, wrapping mouse and etc.

Thanks for the info! very helpful,
So, what’s the best software between them?
Using Mouse Without borders, it is not possible to switch between Windows and any other OS. Also, Mouse Without Borders gives a lot of problems, like unsynchronized mouse movements, lags, lockups, random mouse movements duplication etc.
Try out Synergy, another free software, which is not only more stable, but it also allows you to connect Windows, Mac and Linux systems. Another good alternative is Input Director (Windows only), which is also very stable, and has nice clipboard sharing feature.

Is it possible to “connect” a Windows PC and Linux PC? Or do they all have to be running Windows?
Nice article. This could actually be very helpful to me. I recently had a virus on my favorite (XP) machine. Even though I’m 99.9% sure it is gone, I’ve been going to my Win 7 laptop to pay bills and work with my bank account. As I understand it, using Mouse Without Borders, would take out all the hassle of switching computers. Very cool. :)
