MSN Messenger Error 80048820

For no reason, I was unable to connect to MSN Messenger today.
I got the error message as below.
MSN Messenger Error 80048820

Fix this error / possible solution

  • This error can be caused by problems on the MSN servers, look at the status page to see if there are problems reported. If there are, the best thing to do is probably to wait until they are over.
  • A frequent cause is that the time on your computer is not correct.
To correct the time on your computer, double-click the clock in the bottom right of your screen, in the window that appears you should check both the time and date.
If you use Windows XP, you can automatically correct the time by clicking the “Internet Time” tab, next click the “Update Now” button.
  • I checked the date of my Windows and found out it was back dated to year 2004. Once I set it back to 2005, I was able to connect back to MSN Messenger. Yea! :D

Credits to MSN-Problems for this content.

Update 19 December 2005: A new full install MSN Messenger v7.5.0322 is out. Please download from this link. It should fix the MSN Messenger Error 80048820.

If you still have problems connecting with the time adjusted, try to run this file. This will make sure MSN Messenger can find all the files it needs on your computer. Note that running the file can take a few minutes.

i have the same problem stated above i checked time run the file above but still have a problem stating that the gateway is appeared to be offline and i cannot connect my msn messenger

same problem, but cannot log into ebay, hotmail or anything that involves a log in apart from forums.

    • http://raymond.cc Raymond

Frank: Can’t login to ebay, hotmail or anything that involves a log in?
I think that has nothing to do with this error because this is specifically for MSN Messenger problem.
Try using a different browser such as Firefox at http://www.mozilla.org/

      PLEASE HELP!

    • David

I’ve been trying to fix this on a friend’s computer. Nothing seems to work. Tried Firefox and found that it can’t even connect to the Internet! IE appears to be the only app on his PC that will connect. In fact, from the command prompt a telnet to port 80 on his wireless router won’t even work – though you can access it via IE. Never seen that before. Something odd going on.

    • http://raymond.cc Raymond

Drew: Try disabling your Norton and see if your MSN Messenger is able to connect.
David: Looks like you’re not able to run any other applications other than IE, am I right? Any firewall/spyware blocking the applications? Perhaps there is a hidden firewall that only allows IE to run and blocks the rest.

    • Iain

tried a few things and nothing. even considering paying a fortune to get someone to fix it.

norton has expired and cant seem to take it off to put on an older version! arrrgh

I’ve tried everything still doesn’t let me log in. I’ll check back on this page soon hopefully to find out what i can do to fix this problem. Thanks.

There is a problem with the MSN Messenger 7.5.0311.
Hopefully the new built which is coming soon will fix the login problem.
It seems that only certain accounts are affected. If you try login to MSN Messenger using a different username, it works.

    • Ralph

i had the same problem too and it causes by norton 2005, i had to remove it and install another anti virus.

    • Frank

I have the same problem i think. My msn messenger won’t let me sign in, i can’t access any of my email accounts and there are only certain websites that i can get onto. However my yahoo messenger is working fine so i figured it was an msn problem. I have tried most of the suggestions. but everytime i try to alter my nortan antivirus it says a problem has been encountered and has to close. So there is not much else i can try. Please HELP!

Checked clock, un/re-install of messenger, used patch above. I eventually fixed my problem by a firmware upgrade on my router.

Its pretty simple to resolve, on your internet explorer, goto tools, options, advanced, scroll all the way to the bottom and uncheck server certification revocation (requires start). Your problem solved!

      i followed their instructions:

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type regsvr32 softpub.dll and then click OK.
      Restart MSN Messenger.

Hi guys, after 3 days i’ve find the possible solution for the 80048820 error of msn.i’ve read on this site that a possible solution is the uncorrect time of your pc!!
it can be strange but when i changed my time(that was 12 april 2002)!! immediately i connected to msn!!!!
      i hope that you’ll take my advice,thanks.

      Raymond,
Just like David, i’ve tried everything but one, i changed my connection from adsl trhough wireless router to a dialup and i connected. Why could this happen?

    • wardamuskan

Our kids had any rong click on the key board.

    • Peter

Hey, I had the same problem with this, and tried all the various options to solve it. I actually found that it was the order on which I logged onto the router network at home. If you share your internet connection, try getting everyone to log off and then try to geton to msn. worked for me. hope this is of some help.

Had the same problem, couldn’t login to hotmail or msn messenger. I googled it and found a few solutions, most of them given in the comments above. But what worked for me was, I stopped Norton Internet Security from running its expired subscription and the very next moment I could login in.

    • marcel

All of a sudden i could not log into MSN Messenger 7.5, and error code 80048820 keeps coming up, i check the time/date and updated it but still doesn’t work, i runned the file which finds all the files needed on your computer but that didn’t work either, then i tried uninstalling MSN Messanger and re-installing it and that still did not work. I honestly don’t know what to do and would be greatful for any help! Thanks.

    • rachel

      xx

    • Gekko

I fixed it! All of you who haven’t yet, and who know you have the correct time, when you try to sign in, watch. Does it change the amount of characters in your password? It always changed mine to eight. So I made my password eight characters, and I can sign in!

    • Your Royal Holiness The Suck

Go Raymond dude you’re deservant of a fucking medal, If it’s any help to people in the future, this happened to me after I restored my “last settings to work” in setup while the computer was on start up. If anyone has done this their time will still be correct if they syncronise it through windows yet the YEAR will be 2000 because the computer restores the same settings as it would have when it was brand new.

      Rock On

      Once you reset your router, MTU Size also is reset. here is how you can correct;

      1. Log in your Router
      2. Go to WAN Set Up
      3. Look for MTU Size, if it is set to 1500 change to 1492 for PPPoE connections.
      4. Click Apply and restat your router.

Note: It may not work for all routers, I use NETGEAR.

      MTU Size

The normal MTU (Maximum Transmit Unit) value for most Ethernet networks is 1500 Bytes, 1492 Bytes for PPPoE connections, or 1436 for PPTP connections. For some ISPs you may need to reduce the MTU. But this is rarely required, and should not be done unless you are sure it is necessary for your ISP connection

      All the best.
