My Temporary Solution to Fix Mozilla Firefox 3 Random Crashing Problem

Posted By Raymond In Category: Computer

I’ve been using Firefox 3 since Release Candidate 1 (RC1) and what I really like about the new version is the improvement in time required to load web pages. Loading any websites seems to be much faster. However, the memory usage problem is there. Three weeks later came Firefox Release Candidate 2 (RC2) and I immediately downloaded and installed RC2 because it is suppose to fix more bugs.
Firefox 3 Crash Problem
I started to experience real big problem with Firefox 3 RC2 that is intermittently crashing of the browser. I thought this is normal because it is still under testing and not a final stable release. Within a week, Firefox RC3 was released and it is the last RC before the final release. Updated to RC3, still the same crashing problem. About a week later, Firefox 3 final was released and I immediately updated my Firefox to the latest version hoping that the crashing problem would be fixed.

Unfortunately even the final “stable” version of Firefox 3 is still crashing intermittently. Waited for nearly 2 weeks, but still no updates. This crashing problem is really annoying because it is intermittent and there is no way to replicate the problem. Firefox 3 can crash when opening a site with flash, opening a new tab, closing tab, filling up forms and etc… I’ve got really fed up with the problem and I had to find a solution.

Sometimes I’d get a screen that says “firefox.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost. For more information about this error, click here.”

firefox.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close

Clicking the more information link shows that there is a problem with mozcrt19.dll at offset 00006c6c. Sometimes it is caused by other DLL files.
mozcrt19.dll error signature

And sometimes Firefox 3 crash is caused by ModName unknown at offset 0521001d.
Firefox crash modname unknown

There are times that Firefox 3 just crashes and closes itself. Immediately after that Mozilla Crash Report window will show asking me to report the problem to Firefox developers.
Firefox crash reporter

Firstly, I uninstalled Firefox and deleted Firefox folders in Program Files. I then install a clean version of Firefox 3 and use a new profile. After using it for a while, Firefox 3 crashed again. It clearly shows that there are problems with Firefox 3 because I’ve already done a clean installation and using a new profile.

I tried using the latest Opera but somehow I am not used to it. Some of the shortcut keys and mouse clicks are different. One example is I need to simultaneously press CTRL + SHIFT + LEFT CLICK to open a link in a new tab. As for Firefox, it only requires CTRL + LEFT CLICK to open a link in a new tab… Another problem is some of the websites doesn’t display correctly in Opera.

I could revert back to Firefox 2 but I am so used to the speed in loading websites with Firefox 3. I remembered that the most stable version I used for Firefox 3 was RC1. What I did was I downloaded Firefox 3 RC1 Portable, extracted to my hard drive, copied my local profile to the portable version and voila, I am using Firefox 3 but no crashes. This is my temporary solution until the developer of Firefox fix the crashing problem. The local Firefox profile is usually installed in C:\Documents and Settings\[user]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\default.???\ Just copy the contents of that folder (except the cache directories) to the FirefoxPortable\Data\profile directory.

I know that I will be exposed to security risk when using Firefox 3 RC1 but crashing few times a day is very annoying, unproductive and gets on my nerves. I have Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 and it should protect my computer from any malicious codes that is vulnerable to Firefox 3 RC1.

Update: I noticed that an Add-on {972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd}:3.0 is causing the crash. The weird thing is I don’t even have any add-on installed! I went to C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\extensions and found a folder {972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd} with a install.rdf file inside. I removed the folder and so far it’s not crashing for me “yet”.

For your information: {972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd}:3.0 comes with every Firefox version because it corresponds to the default theme installed which comes with Firefox. Hence you saw it here and now since you deleted it, check the themes tab in your firefox, default theme won’t be shown as installed there.

that is weird and i have had people complain about it, but i have yet to have that happen to me, every once in a while, i might get a memory usage problem, but then i just exit the process and choose restore previous session and i’m fine.

If your Firefox keep crashing, are you using Kaspersky? If so, then Kaspersky might be the culprit. http://forum.kaspersky.com/index.php?showtopic=74111

Thanks for the heads up bahamot. Didn’t expect that Kaspersky might be the culprit of firefox 3 crashing problem. I will try to investigate from there.

i recently (6/12) did a clean install of Win XP Tablet PC 05 from a restoration disk. im running McAfee and and installed SP3.

i have been running my pc very clean and careful to avoid the malware, virus\’, ect. that locked it down and forced me to reformat. i currently have minimal software installed and have been running adaware and spybot.

that said, ever since i updated to the FF3 it has crashed like crazy.

So with a fresh XP install, few programs, and little possibility of registry problems, FF3 is still crashing frequently..

I still run 1.5.12. – with all my favourite extensions. ncluding the all so fabulous tabextensions fron hiroshi (or so). I could get myself the spell-checker extension, if I needed it. Cheers,
uninstalled all old add-ons which weren’t running in 3.0 anyway, but still need to see whether this helps.

I am also encountering frequent crashes which are HIGHLY annoying. I just hope there will be a solution. Your article and the responses below don’t give me too much hope that the uninstalling of the old Add-Ons will help, so I guess I need to wait.

Don’t want to install Opera or anything else as well. And so far, I have to reluctantly use the Internet Exploder.

    • http://www.grosse-coosmann.com Andreas

      Cheers again,

as I read in a Ubuntu Forum, the problem is across all platforms and is related to the Flash Player. As the guys over there said, Adobe is aware of the problem and is working on a solution.
But as you all know: Flash is not Open Source, so a solution may take a while and by chance we’ll hear about it…

      Good luck!

      CORRECTION!
Firefox is working for me now.

I tried safe mode, reinstalling, disabling addons and reset everything to defaults. Firefox still kept crashing.

Do this: When uninstalling firefox, somewhere I had an option to delete old data. There is a check box you have to click. (somebody clarify this) It says that you will lose all old data like bookmarks etc… Go ahead and delete old data. I found some exe file was deleted. Then, install firefox 3.0.1. No crashes! Gmail, tabs everything is safe. I am posting this on many sites.

      Woohoo!

      Please Opera fans,
We’re all happy for you that you love your favorite browser so much. But don’t try to convert us.

Thanks Raymond, I hope your tips help me as much as some other commenters. I really wonder what came into the Mozilla team to announce dropping support for v2.x.

    • TJ

I used to use FF portable when FF3 wouldn’t run. Now I just keep the FF3 installer handy. If FF3 crashes more than 1 time, I run a new install right over the old, just like updating to a newer version. Works every time, up and running in just a few seconds.
FF portable takes at least 30 seconds to start on my comp, Opera portable starts like a bolt of lightning.

My Firefox was upgrade to the latest version 2 days ago, and I have been having nothing but problems. Today, I switched to Opera. You guys need to check Opera. It’s awesome! If you like addons/extensions for Firefox, you will love the widgets for Opera. I got everything I need and some. Opera now runs faster and use less memory than Firefox. I switched from IE to FF about 2 years ago when Opera sucked, now Opera is definitely better than FF in my opinion. I probably wouldn’t go back to FF if they do fix the problems with all the crashing, freezing, hanging, and dead popup links. Check out Opera, you won’t regret it.

helpful, but i think i’ll go with the slower firefox 2. i’ve been having problems with firefox 3 ever since it was released. and it’s just not once or twice. or even a few times a day. it’s a few times every cupple minutes, stop for another cupple hours, then starts crashing again. crash with the average of 10 times or so a day. well it’s mac so it can’t be helped i guess. but windows? gah never responds. why? oh just cause i runed a window for games, it shouldn’t cause any problems though as it never did before. but now? not satisfied with the crashing or force quiting at all.

    • http://Hello Ivana

      Hello,
I use windows xp and i have IE and Mozilla. Few days ago i started to have this problem with both of them. When i open some pages over internet, my internet window just shuts down… first it says it occured some problem and it needs to be closed and i have 3 options: debug, send report, don’t send report, and no matter which option i chose it just closes. I open my internet again and it asks me do i want to reopen those same pages and when i click yes it just happens again, and when i start a new session it is ok. So for example i can open facebook, but i cannot enter poker application cause it shuts down everything, and i can open some page on internet, but some other i can’t.. I don’t understand why.. :( I tried to clear cookies, cache, uninstall mozilla, reinstall, i don’t have any viruses according to spyware doctor and other than that i have a mouse problem too, my right button is not working so i have to copy and paste with keyboard. And I read somewhere that I should start my mozilla in safe mode in order to solve that mouse problem, so I did that and my mouse worked, and my poker worked too! I was so happy!!! And next day i turned it on again, and everything was same, i had that mouse problem, and poker problem, and on some other pages, that are not games, just normal google pages. So i tried that safe mode again, but it doesn’t work :(
Now, i did what you wrote too. I deleted {972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd and i went to poker again and it crashed again !!! What do i do??

I think i know what the solution is.

I reinstalled my windows over and over again but still my firefox, chorme, IE, or opera crashes.so i took my friends advice to removed my video card from the motherboard and used the built-in instead. and then i reinstalled my windows again. and now it does not crash anymore. so now i need to replace a new video card.
my friend told me that we have the same prob;em but he has to replace some RAM. hope this helps.

The “temporary fix” provided by the author worked fine – no crashes any more ! — Thanks..

Ok…here we go, i went into the folder and saw the file described in this topic earlier. I moved the whole folder from that harddrive to another for testing and so far, it seems to be a viable solution. While testing, i proceeded to bombard Firefox with as many tabs and websites as i could and still no crash. Yes i know it’s the firefox basic theme file, but it could be that there is an issue within that very file that’s causing the crashes. I will however continue to test Firefox to see how well it holds up. I will post a comment tomorrow if there are no further issues.

Well, ain’t this a bitch, something is going on here and i really don’t think this shit is funny. I’d ratherv deal with IE8…least i know it don’t crash and it has had some improvements as far as the speed. So, to the Firefox tech team i say…dismantle and re-create…maybe then, you can figure out where you’ve fucked up at. Fuck Firefox…it’s back to IE for me.

Has anybody given it much thought that Microsuck may have released a update to deliberately cause all other browsers to crash? When i did a re-install of Windows, i had no problems with Firefox crashing until after Windows updates. Could the answer be the updates? Opera, Google Chrome, and Firefox has the crashing problem. And i have noticed that IE8 is even faster than the older versions. As much as i would hate to, IE8 may become my choice of browsers being as it doesn’t have these issues.

My Mozilla version 3.6.8 crashed after a few seconds and took IE8 with it.

The solution is to disable Shockwave flash plug in on my add ons and now it works fine!

    • Firefox sucks shit

I posted this in the firefox forums:

It’s a crap browser – simple. I mean I like it more than Googles IDIOT minimalist set up – because I have landed on my head too many times and hate trying to guess at things I rarely use and are hidden; IE – that is just a bag of Microsoft forced vertical integration into everything else Microsoft, and Opera – that is a neandethal set up if ever there was one….

But when you go do a search on “Firefox is shit” and see the amount of sites that come up – and then compare your own experiences and the “Glowing Terms” that the people of the Mozilla foundation speak – of security, speed, stability etc…

Once you get past all the phases of the moon patch up jobs and bullshit – your going to come to the realisation that the core issue is that THIS browser it’s self, and the way that it is programmed; this is the core issue.

All this crap about broken profiles, javascript, flash, phases of the moon, frying the wrong side of the egg, aural cleansing, compatability with add on’s etc., etc., etc.. and of course the operating system issues – well I run Linux and this pus bag browser still bogs down to the roof…..

The only solution is to have a premeditated act of killing the damned thing off – set up and running in the background….

In Linux it’s Alt-F2, and the command XKILL, then place the RUN button to the right side of the slightly minimalised browser window.

I think the same thing can be set up for Windows, with Ctl + Alt + Del, and have “Kill Process” set up for Firefox, with only the “YES” left to click on before you shotgun this pus bag browser into oblivion.

Of course you could always come back to these forums and resort to waving magic beads, incantations, phases of the moon, astrological charts and putting the fist of Mars into the House of Uranus….

    • Firefox sucks shit

I have Fire Fox set up to open at a totally blank page….. No Google, nothing – completely blank….

It’s using 110Meg of memory JUST sitting there – blank, ONE completely BLANK page.. just started up, and this fuckhole program – is going into “Synchronise Web pages” (and bog down / hang – while it happens).

      What fucking webpages?

Mozilla Developers = Dick Heads = Make Shit Software.
