Paint.NET – Probably the BEST FREE Image and Photo Editor

Just a short post for today because I will be on the plane in a few hours leaving to my hometown for my mother’s birthday. I am no graphics designer but I do know that Paint.NET is probably the BEST free image and photo editor on the Internet. I say that because I saw many people giving 5 out of 5 ratings to Paint.NET. Of course, there are some people that gave 1 out of 5 and they got a good bashing from other reviewers. They should know better that Paint.NET is frequently updated and it might support the feature that he/she wants in future.
FREE Best Image Editor
Don’t be confused with the Windows built-in Microsoft Paint with Paint.NET. It is different and Paint.NET is far superior than Microsoft Paint.

Paint.NET supports layers and it is usually only found on expensive or complicated professional software such as Photoshop. Layers form the basis for a rich image composition experience. You may think of them as a stack of transparency slides that, when viewed together at the same time, form one image.

Many special effects are included for enhancing and perfecting your images. Everything from blurring, sharpening, red-eye removal, distortion, noise, and embossing are included. Also included is our unique 3D Rotate/Zoom effect that makes it very easy to add perspective and tilting. Adjustments are also included which help you tweak an image’s brightness, contrast, hue, saturation, curves, and levels. You can also convert an image to black and white, or sepia-toned. If that is not enough, you can visit Paint.NET plugin forum to get more free effects plugin.

Yeah I know you might be a hardcore Photoshop fan but can you believe that Paint.NET installation file is only 1.65MB? It might not be as powerful as Photoshop but the file size is surprisingly small for an image editing software that is packed with powerful features!

Most importantly, Paint.NET is Open Source and FREE!

Love Paint.NET so much but hate to run it on Windows? Someone has made an effort to port Paint.NET to linux using Mono. That’s the good thing about open source programs. More information about Paint.NET for Linux here.

The gimp is a very good program, but its non standard layout and steep learning curve tends to put off most people from a Windows centric background. Paint.net on the other hand has a relatively standard Windows layout so those I have recommended it to have found it easy to get to grips with. Not to mention that it is a very good program which I have been using it since shortly after it was released and it wasn’t long before it replaced Paint Shop Pro as my standardl image editor.

Nice to see that you blogged about paint.net. I often use it when I need a quick job done as it loads much faster than PSD or Fireworks. Great software, and great blog ;)

Iam using Paint.NET for years. It rules. I think the UI is more intuitive than the one GIMP provides.

You have got to be kidding, right? It has nothing on GIMP. It isn’t even cross-platform! And what steep learning curve? Simple editing tools like cropping and contrast and color adjustments are 2 clicks away. It is pretty self-explanatory, unless you are doing some major tricky stuff. And even then, there is so much free material and tutorials on the web, along with FREE plug-ins and scripts that the community creates, you should be on top of it pretty quickly. If you want a quick front end for viewing files and tagging etc, Geeqie works great, and editing opens it up in GIMP. For closed-source/windows, ACDSee is miles better than paint.NET. Also Adobes Lightroom has great flow and mass manipulation to a professional standard. But as a Linux user, I also have Apache, running Gallery; so I have my own image server, like flickr or picasa. Want to do this on Windows, you will need windows server and IIS. That’s $700, at least! Add Photoshop into the price, and you can see why people have gone open source.

Checkout the most advanced online graphic design application erver made:

      http://www.gfxeditor.com

It has integrated capabilities for editing bitmap images and photos, drawing with vectors, using dingbat vector clipart, writing rich text, making page layout and displaying graphics on merchandise from Zazzle.com. Furthermore, it can search and import photos from Wikimedia, Picasa, Flickr and upload/download from/to the user’s local computer.

It is the first graphics application to fully integrate with a custom printed merchandise fulfillment company.

It was launched in May 2010, after 5 years of development by a Danish-Brazilian software developer.

i love paint.net (i also find gimp to have a too complex layout and too many tools a noob would never understand, but that’s not the point), but i use Ubuntu Linux, and I’ve been looking everywhere for a clone of paint.net for it, but everything is inadequate. if you could rewrite it for Linux, i would be most grateful.

      happy birthday!
