I got to know about zip previewing technology 7 years ago when I was in Eighth Wonder group. Our leader ad4 made a software called View That Zip (VTZ) which allows you to preview and open ZIP archive files online without downloading and then you can extract single files without having to download the whole ZIP file.
This is very useful after downloading a huge archive file and then one of it is corrupted. Instead of downloading the whole archive again, you can just select the file from the archive and download it. Too bad View That Zip is no longer available. I’ve inquired ad4 about the View That Zip and he said that he might update the program.
If you’re interested, here are other tools which you can also use to preview ZIP contents.
There is a software called Zip Preview by RentASoft that allows you to view the contents of a zip file without the need to download the whole zip file first. You can download / extract as many files as you like from within the zip as you need, this saves you time as you don’t need to waste time downloading files from within the zip file you don’t want.
Unfortunately Zip Preview is not free. You can either rent Zip Preview for a week at $0.94, a month at $3.43 or just purchase the software for $24.95 and use without time limit.
Other than Zip Preview, many download manager such as ReGet, Mass Downloader, Internet Download Accelerator (IDA), Internet Download Manager (IDM), Download Accelerator Plus (DAP) and HiDownload is able to support previewing of zip files.
Unfortunately all download managers that I mentioned above are shareware but I am sure that there are cracks or serial numbers for it. Popular free download manager such as FlashGet and Orbit Downloader doesn’t have this feature. Internet Download Manager can only preview ZIP file and cannot download files from it. Not worth buying this software if you want this feature. As for HiDownload, you can only download file by file and not multiple files. Of all the download managers above, I like Mass Downloader the best because it is very easy to preview zip contents.
The only free download manager that has zip preview is TrueDownloader. It is a free open source download manager for Windows. You can only preview zip contents but can’t download the files inside the zip file. It’s pretty useless since you can extract single files without having to download the whole ZIP file.

is there any d/l manager that would be able to do preview and selective downloads for RAR archive types. As Imponk already said, rar is much more common than zip.

Mahmoud, the download manager has zip preview function. There are very few dedicated programs to view zip contents without downloading them.

I hope you remember me from older posts.
Some time ago I used a software called “HTTP Zip Dowloader v1.2″ , I found it very useful when mame roms where updated and changed some files inside the zip (and i had a 56k modem). And of course it´s freeware. The only con is (that it seems to be a bug) is that does not download files inside folders in zip. And it Cheers
