No matter how advanced or experienced computer user you are, if you’re a person that very frequently connect and disconnecting USB flash drive on your computer, one fine day you’ll be less careful and the nasty virus will infect your computer using the autorun.inf method.

Previously I’ve shared with you a tool called USB Firewall that can protect your Windows by notifying you whenever a USB flash drive that contains an autorun.inf file has been plugged in. It works pretty well and doesn’t require any signature but the only con is it is not smart enough to detect whether the autorun.inf is malicious or not. You have to judge it yourself by viewing the autorun.inf file and then taking the necessary action to either delete the file or cancel the warning window. This tool is more for advance users.

If you’re a computer newbie, or even an advance user, you can try this free antivirus designed to only protect your computer from virus, worms or trojan which usually spread from external USB flash drives to your computer.

Mx One is an antivirus designed to effectively protect your computer and the devices of external storage such as USB flash drives (also known as pendrives), iPod, mp3/mp4 players, SD, microSD, and many other memory cards from computer virus infection. The program’s interface is very simple and you can easily scan, update, quarantine or send a virus sample by clicking the button. Sending a sample of a virus will need to be done from the browser and not directly from the program.

Mx One Antivirus takes up only 3MB of memory and I don’t feel any lag in my system with it running in background. This tool is compatible and can be ran side by side with any antivirus such as Nod32, Kaspersky, BitDefender, AVG, Pandata and etc that provides real time protection.

I tried plugging in my USB flash drive with a non malicious autorun.inf file, Mx One immediately scans the USB flash drive and reports that it did not find any virus or threat.

Mx One antivirus also has the ability to automatically update the virus definition signature file. From Mx One’s blog site, it showed that the definition is updated nearly everyday. Two things that can be improved in this tool is the ability to recognize whether the user has the latest signature file or not and scanning window automatically closes itself if no threat detected after the scan. I find it troublesome to click the close button each time I plug in an external storage drive.

Ray, I have found this software couple of weeks ago, but I didn’t use it as it may interfere with the USB Firewall. Is it possible to interfere with USB Firewall? Or I can use them two at the same time? Or any better suggestion? Thanks! :D

      Good Morning,

Read somewhere on the net that:-
5/31/2008 CAUTION: It has recently been reported that Mx One “may be infected” with a Trojan. We have removed the link to the download and at this point discourage anyone from trying the software until a definitive answer and resolution has been made.

good share ray, the fact that usbs are so cheap and common leads to massive use of usbs and massive virus transfers from pc to pc via usb ..

    • brayden

      @Ishaan
You shouldn’t have any problems but try for yourself.

    • Pratik

      Thnx..
But How can I protect my usb drive from being infected ??? Is there any USB based utility that can protect my UBS drive running from the usb drive itself ????

      Thnx raymond…you rock

I’ll try this one, because my newest norton datavirus remove the “USB Firewall”. It is detected as a TrojanHorse, is it true?

    • shri

I downloaded the file, its .exe contains TROJAN, pls. chk.

    • Ishaan

Hey even i scanned @ virustotal.com n found 6 antivirus program says that it is trojan, worm, suspicious……
I have installed it but dont know whether to remove it or not…Quite confused…n rising hardly detects threats but as u said it dont allow to get ur system infected i m still with it…..

    • http://www.raymond.cc/ Raymond

No worries people, it is definitely false positive. If it is a trojan, it should be listening or accepting connection from an IP but there’s nothing on that.

    • Doktor Notor

OMG, everyone went mad? Disable autorun and move on, instead of installing such piece of junk…

    • pl.myanmar

      thanks raymond.

i also found i good tool that can prevent autorun virus from USB.
      http://www.zbshareware.com
software name is USB Disk Security-zbshareware

    • http://www.raymond.cc/ Raymond

USB Disk Security cost $55. With that money, I can buy a good antivirus program such as Kaspersky or Avira.

thanks for this raymond but dont u think kaspersky would be able to catch all these viruses as well… but as its a free software. thanks for sharing … :)

I decided to give this a try and found something kinda interesting, I have a number of USB drives and 2 of them have the portableapps suite on, both of which kicked up as a virus in the actual portableapps.exe I\’m 99% sure this is a false positive since I have used these on a number of machines running different AV programs and this is the first time I\’ve had a problem.

      Dear Raymond,

Sorry to say, but this is a sad app, I tried to use it on my desktop at the university sitting behind a proxy server and no updates!

I hope we do better next time!

Thanks for all your great post, keep up the good work!

      Regards,

Hello, This blog is really a fantastic source of usful programs and I would like to contribute to it by confirming some of the reports about “Antivirus Mx One” being a bearer of problems. I have just run a test of my system with Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware 1.30 and it came up with the following – .
I don’t think that this is a false postive and a malware that is designed to get at banking data has to be a general danger because it can get at important data.
Could Raymond or anyone comment on this. It would be a real pity because “Antivirus Mx One” seems like a very usuful program.
