Here’s a quick and easy way to change your administrator password on Windows XP.
1. Place your Windows XP CD in your cd-rom and start your computer (it’s assumed here that your XP CD is bootable as it should be – and that you have your bios set to boot from CD)
2. Keep your eye on the screen messages for booting to your CD Typically, it will be “Press any key to boot from CD”

3. Once you get in, the first screen will indicate that Setup is inspecting your system and loading files.
4. When you get to the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER to Setup Windows now
5. The Licensing Agreement comes next – Press F8 to accept it.
6. The next screen is the Setup screen which gives you the option to do a Repair.
It should read something like “If one of the following Windows XP installations is damaged, Setup can try to repair itâ€
Use the up and down arrow keys to select your XP installation (if you only have one, it should already be selected) and press R to begin the Repair process.
7. Let the Repair run. Setup will now check your disks and then start copying files which can take several minutes.
8. Shortly after the Copying Files stage, you will be required to reboot. (this will happen automatically – you will see a progress bar stating “Your computer will reboot in 15 secondsâ€
9. During the reboot, do not make the mistake of “pressing any key†to boot from the CD again! Setup will resume automatically with the standard billboard screens and you will notice Installing Windows is highlighted.
10. Keep your eye on the lower left hand side of the screen and when you see the Installing Devices progress bar, press SHIFT + F10. This is the security hole! A command console will now open up giving you the potential for wide access to your system.
11. At the prompt, type NUSRMGR.CPL and press Enter. Voila! You have just gained graphical access to your User Accounts in the Control Panel.
12. Now simply pick the account you need to change and remove or change your password as you prefer. If you want to log on without having to enter your new password, you can type control userpasswords2 at the prompt and choose to log on without being asked for password. After you’ve made your changes close the windows, exit the command box and continue on with the Repair (have your Product key handy).
13. Once the Repair is done, you will be able to log on with your new password (or without a password if you chose not to use one or if you chose not to be asked for a password). Your programs and personalized settings should remain intact.

Would be nice.. If my client had his CD’s :( all there is is his main account on XP and no admin account showing up. he changed his password 12 hours ago and cant remember it. after spending 4.5 hours fixing his computer it is now useless 24 hours later.
I have have-never had the password of administrator nobody or on no site I have seen my pasword as administrator, only of supervisor de conteudo that is 143143 and they will not accept it. I deid not know I needede a password for being administrator. Thank you
extreamly good
Thanks, man. It worked. You saved me a lot of time.
This is good. But if you have set Administrative password and forgot it. You want to recover it by this method , then it does not works because it ask for password at recovery console .
Thanks for your great article! I have googled a more easy-to-use windows password reset boot cd, it is Windows Key Finder 1.3, it has beautiful graphical interface.
Sumtimes on Windows clean install after putting in the Windows Key people often choose capslock and leave it on even at putting in a Administrator password. In that case if you have a password that your sure of at it wont go in plain charakter try putting on capslock =p, its dumb but it can happen sumtimes.
thanks! it works perfectly on my hp desktop. fantastic tips!!
I cannot have access to my computer because I forgot my administration possword I need help , thank you
No problem! We can recover most Windows admin and other user passwords.
Just download our windows password Recovery Tool 3.0 to recover your lost Windows passwords.
How does it work?
Just use the box below to download the utility. This is a “.exe” file which will burn itself onto a blank CD. Then pop the CD into your locked PC, and
boot from the CD.
If you have an Internet connection on your locked PC then it will automatically upload the encrypted password to our server for decryption. Once
decrypted, we will send you an email advising you where to log in to view your Windows password.
If you don’t have an Internet connection to your locked PC, you can extract the encrypted password to a USB stick and upload manually to our website for
decryption.
It supports usb flash drive too.
I am running XP Home and may have got a virus. In trying to remove the virus files I may have deleted some operating files to the recycle bin. Now I am not able to log on. I am not asked for a password at log on, the attempt is aborted and I am logged off.
Is there a way to restore files from the recycle bin in safe mode?
If I reload the OS and use the repair option, will this cause me to loose other files or do any reformatting?
I am on hold to find the best way to solve this problem, can anyone offer any help?

I’ve got an issue regarding Windows XP professional administrator password. We’ve got a virus named BlazeFind which doesn’t allow logging in to windows and that has changed the administrator password to something we don’t know.
I tried to follow the steps mentioned in the post, but there was nothing going on in the left hand corner of the screen in phase #10. The windows was merely copying it’s files again like in a fresh install even though I did choose the repair option. Is this normal procedure or does the “Installing devices” pop up later in the installation.
Help would be much appreciated!
plese hake xp password
I bow and give you a thousand thank-you’s
This was an absolute life saver……and best part about it was it was FREE……

helo..can you help me? how to reset password in xp that was disable by virus…administrator.exe virus, i can’t log on to my account as well as the guess account…plz help me..i don’t waste time to reinstall OS, just to recover my account…is there any way out? thanks in advance if you can help me,,,
I can see this really helps, but does it demand a previous password before changing it?
If you forget the administrator’s password but still can log on Windows with other user names that have administrative privileges, you may follow the instructions below:
Right click the computer icon on your desktop, select Manage, find Local Users and Groups, unfold Users folder, right click Administrator, click Set password… in the menu comes up. Click Proceed in the dialog, in the pop-up, enter a New Password and confirm it. Your administrator’s password is successfully reset.
Guest account may help to log onto Windows, but it has no privilege for you to do the above to reset the administrator’s password.
If you forgot all user passwords and failed to log onto Windows, there is no other way but to format the OS and reinstall Windows, or resort to sort of software tools to remove the password and log onto Windows. These programs cost some bucks, but are worthy and better than to reinstall the OS causing consequences. The most popular programs are Windows Password Reset 6.0 etc. Generally, these programs are easy to use though turn out to be a scary command prompt to newbie. But do relax and you can fully manipulate. Let’s take Windows Password Reset 6.0 for example. You prepare a blank CD, burn the program onto the CD, boot the locked computer from the CD, come to initiate the program, locate the user name, and proceed to remove its password – all are at ease.
I don’t think its a security hole cause pressing Shift+F10 at regional settings also opens the command line.
My keyboard won’t respond when I’m in the setup screen. Any ideas why?
HAS ANYONE COME ACROSS THIS PROBLEM? What do you do when you have no windows xp system cd, and once you do get into the system with the “safe mode”, you have no access to the user account file. How do you make changes if you can’t access that file?
I have a real problem here. I can get into my system in “safe mode”, but It will not allow me to create a new user account because each time I try to open the “user account” icon it just flllashes a blank screen up for about a seond and that’s it. If I can’t access the user account file, how will I be able to add or change the user infomation? Please Bro I need your help!!
at the very beginning, how do I even get to the booting screen? how do i starrt the process, i have the disc in I just don’t know what to do after that.
dude u are best ur knowledge helped me a lot
By the way, you can press it anytime after it says Installing Devices.
it can’t work ..i cant log in the administrator account cos i dont know the password
I was able to see all the user accounts except the administrator. Any ideas ???
This is basically useless….all you’re doing is re-installing windows. There’s no tricks here. Even when you change the password you’re just re-installing in the end.
i want windows server 2003 r2 standard 64bit edition sp1 raid drivers?
Guys, after the error it won’t let me go back to my windows start up anymore. It goes straight to, “set up is being restarted” and I don’t know how to stop the set up. PLEASE help me guys? I really appreciate it.
I got all the way to step 11 after typing the command. However, I get an error from user accounts: “The current user account is not recognized. Restart the computer and then open user accounts.” Can someone here please inform me of the possible problems here? Thank you!
Hi I really need help. We bought this used computer and we do not have any disc for downloads. We can not update anything as the computer tells us we do not have administrator priviledges and locks us out. How can we delete this person and let me be the principal administrator?
Please advise. I look forward to your answer.
Thjank you.
Very happy to have come across this. XP Pro SP 2.
Thank you.
How about if the Harddisk is encrypted with “Encryption Plus”?
Great stuff – nice work!
This is a lifesaver for a system like mine – weird RAID drivers I can\’t find for any of the boot CDs so this is the only solution for my messed up system
Cheers!
shift f10 works on wk3 server ent version also..
Dude you rock!!!
Hi man,
U r really really awesome i successfully recovered my system with all data and programs.
thanks a lot
I\’ve successfully recovered my system with Your help!! All programms & setting are on their places, everything works properly!
hi, need help here. I installed winXP sp2 in my computer, after the installation finish, it promt asking for Administrator password and i dont know what is the password because its a new installation… how to solve this problem? please help… thanks and godspeed!
I can’t get this to work.
I go through all the steps, initializing the WinXP setup, but after I press “R” on the “welcome to XP” screen, I can’t use the Shift + F8 command when it says “Installing devices”. It’s a GUI of the Windows XP installation, where it says “Installation will take approximately 34 minutes to complete” or something along those lines.
Do you have to have Service Pack 1 installed? My XP installation disc comes with XP Service Pack 2 on it, and my main Windows installation is patched through Service Pack 3.
I don’t have a password on my normal accounts, even though I have given myself administrative rights to the computer. It’s the actual XP administrator account that I need access to. The thing is, I don’t even remember messing with the password, and yet I can’t get anything to work. Even when I leave the field blank and hit enter, it prompts me for a password.
Is the Administrative password stored on a file somewhere on the computer? If it is, can it be deleted? This is driving me NUTS!!!!
I had the problem: How can I gain access to a Windows XP computer if I forgot the administrator’s password?
The CD did not work for me as it kept asking for the admin password.
Soultion: Download and make a set of bootable XP SP1 floppy disks.
For some reason it came up as windows 2000 on the bootup and never asked for an admin password.
So I was able to proceed to fix the MBR.
I’ve had to do this several times at my work on display computers with WIN XP.
1.Reboot the computer, press and hold F8 and select to start in safe mode.
2.After Windows boots it should have your Admin user, with whatever name you used, plus another user just named Administrator.
3.Select the Administrator account, once the cpu boots up just go to the user accounts under the control panel and delete the password.
You don’t need to know the password to delete it but you do to change it. So if you want to change it delete it first then create a new one. Hope this can help someone. It just seems easier especially if you don’t have an bootable XP disc.
I want Reset My Administrator Password
Are existing data files affected after pressing R for REPAIR in step 6.
Thought I would Give this a shot on a work laptop that had never been connected to the domain and needed a password reset.I followed the directions to a T and all is well.I was able to log in to the account. Not sure why people are having such a hard time seemed extremely simple to me.
I put a new password in Admin, it was all right. But after this pass didn\\\’t work, why?
I just wanted to thank you for posting this fix. It does indeed work. And it worked for me on a computer with SP2 for those who are wondering whether it works with that. I did not have to
wow boss, its working, thanks
I guess this method works, but please keep in mind when using this method, that some or possibly all of installed programs wil stop running. In some cases you can lose some personal information.
Best way to solve your password problems would be by using a password reset disk.
There are alot on the net for free, which i’d rather recomend then this roundabout way.
Excelente tuto, me sirvio de maravilla, Gracias!!!
thanks simple and easy
thanks. i recover my password
I assume this no longer works post service pack 3.

This did not work for me. typed in nusrmgr.cpl and it loaded control panel or something with an overlay error message box that said this user was not logged on, log on as adminsitrator. . . ? something.
You must use one off the first XP pro versions.
Not one with SP1 or SP2 or SP3 allready integrated.
Used XP pro EN (one of the first releases) does works.
however no guaraties it will not corrupt a newer XP release.

Use this while you are loged on with administrative rights to do the following:
go to: RUN->cmd->net user administrator *
after you tipe the above the following message will be displayed: \\\\\\\”Type a password for the user:\\\\\\\”
The only thing you have to do is to input at the prompter your desired password. Enjoy!

This also works with Windows Server 2003 (I tested it with Standard Edition). The only difference is that instead of using \”NUSRMGR.CPL\” (Which doesn’t work on Win2003) you have to use \”LUSRMGR.MSC\”
Thanks

Does anyone here have any suggestions as its driving me crazy.
Thanks

My Bad…once again. Sorry. Where is the product key located?
CORRECTION: Where is the product key located?
Where is the product key typically located?
Let me just help out a bit. For those who keep pressing R in the first screen and come to the Recovery Console… You are doing it wrong. You need to press enter on the first screen like you wanted to install winxp. The after the license agreement later comes a screen that asks whether you wanna install a fresh copy or repair. That is where you press R
Hope that helps clear it all
