Restore or Fix Missing Accessories Shortcuts in Start Menu

I usually ask my clients to run disk defragmenter at least once a month to reduce the amount of fragmentation in file systems in order to keep disk access speed from degrading. I told them they could easily run Disk Defragmenter from Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter. One of them got back to me saying that there’s no Accessories folder at the Start Menu!

Restore missing shortcuts in accessories group

The Accessories group shortcut in Start Menu is the easiest way for any computer user to access Windows built-in utilities such as Disk Cleanup, Disk Defragmenter, Backup, Scheduled Tasks, Synchronize and etc. Those tools are only shortcut mostly pointing to executable files in Windows System32 directory. Since it is only a shortcut, I am not surprised that it can be accidentally deleted or removed from Start Menu.

There are 2 ways I know that can easily restore back the Accessories group to Start Menu.

First logical way is to copy the whole Accessories folder from another computer and paste it to the computer that is missing of the Accessories folder. It’d normally work because the shortcut points to environment variable path such as %SystemRoot%\system32 instead of C:\Windows\system32. So even if the Windows is installed in D:\ drive, it’d still work.

Second method is using a small and simple tool created by Ramesh Srinivasan to restore accessories group.

Restore accessories icon

This utility restores the missing shortcuts to the Start Menu Accessories group. The Accessories group includes sub-folders namely Accessibility, Communications, System Tools, Entertainment. You can select the sub-folders that you want to restore and can also select whether to restore it to All Users or Current User Profile. This tool is only 60KB in size and works only in Windows XP.

Is there any way to restore more in WIN XP Pro? I lost about 80% of my start/all programs/… items. I think that a registry “fix” program created the problem. I tried going through my entire programs directory and “pinning” the .exe programs to the start, but this is not what I really the same thing. Before the error, when I hit “start”, then “all programs” the list was about 3 columns of programs, now it only has 20 programs listed. I tried changing the number of start menu items allowed, but the software will not allow me to change the number higher than 30.

Hi this is if you have lost most of your programs in the Vista Home Premium start all programs area
First of all you need to do is create shortcuts from the following programs and shortcuts
      To get these open start>computer>search
Start to type or copy paste the following into the search bar located in the top right hand corner
The 1st 7 are folders and the rest are just shortcuts and save to the desktop.

      Accessories
      Extras and Upgrades
      Administrative Tools
      Games
      Maintenance
      Programs
      Startup
      Shortcuts
      Launch Internet Explorer Browser
      Media Center
      Media Center
      Windows Collaboration
      Windows Contacts
      Windows Defender
      Windows DVD Maker
      Windows Media Player
      Windows Movie Maker
      Windows Photo Gallery
      Windows Sidebar

Once you have done this you will need to do the following:

Right click on the Start button and click on Open All Users or Explore All Users, not Open/Explore.
NOTE: This will open this hidden Start Menu folder in Windows Explorer:
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu then you copy or cut and paste all of the folders and
Shortcuts you have just made in the folder then close this and then hey presto all done:
Click start all programs then you will see all back to normal…
This took a while for me to figure out and no doubt it will happen again so I will be smart
Write it all down and copy all the folders and shortcuts I have made and this no file to a cd for
      Future use
I hope this helps anyone with this issue thanks for looking… you don’t need to install
Any other software to do this as my old Pappy said to the best way to learn About a Pc is to read
      The forums lol

Thank you very much for the great restore program. My PC got many viruses and after removing all of them my PC was in a mess. I was ready to resinstall my OS. This virus or group of viruses actually hides all of your icons and hides all of your folders. I have also lost most of my shortcuts. I have decided to create new shortcuts for programs I need to open when I need to.
