I’m sorry for vanishing without a trace for nearly a month, and I’ll like to explain what happened. I took a vacation, a trip down to see my girlfriend in Chicago and celebrated the fifth year we’ve been dating. I took a break from writing on the blog, but did visit the forum as often as I could. And on the major plus side, I managed to rid Windows Vista off my girlfriend’s computer and gave her Windows XP, as most people that have used Vista have faced issues, and those that have been lucky enough not to get those issues, have heard of them.

I also picked up a computer while I was in the States, a beast of one. It’s a new i5 computer, with a 64 bit processor, meaning I can now develop and test 64bit compatible applications. And I decided to start my return to blog writing with giving one of my favourite freeware’s Professional version a spin!

For those that have never used Revo Uninstaller, Free or Professional, you do not know what you are missing. I’ve been using it for a long time, and remains one of my programs I recommend to anyone who asks. It’s a very powerful, free uninstaller that I’ve used many a time to uninstall applications that I’ve installed to test or other applications that have needed uninstallation for the new versions. Recently, within the past two years, VS Revo Group updated their website, and offer now the Professional version which has more features then their Free by a lot. The Free version only works on 32 bit version of Windows, as well as a basic cleaning program and junk cleaner/ browser cleaner. However, after demoing the Professional version, it’s extremely hard to look at the Free version and consider it “just as good”.

The Professional version of Revo Uninstaller offers different skins built in, a Backup Manager, a file recovery section, much like Recuva, an “Evidence Remover” which would be a secure deletion along with more advanced versions of the same cleaners the free version has. The other thing I’ve noticed is how much faster it is at removing programs then the Free version, but that might also be due to the fact that I’m also on a more powerful PC.

Revo Uninstaller Pro is usually $39.25 for a single computer, but I’ve contacted Revo Group and they’ve kindly provided two free licences of Revo Uninstaller Pro for Raymond.cc readers. There are only two rules to the giveaway. The first thing that you have to do is subscribe to the blog, if you haven’t already. And the second is the easy part: comment on this blog post. After you’ve done both, all you have to do is wait until Sunday, September 12th, which I will draw the two winners and announce them then. Best of luck to all whom enter!

      I have used Revo Uninstaller Free for several years, and recommend it to all my friends. Last December I upgraded my personal computer to Win 7 64-bit. Since then I have noticed that a lot of my installs don’t even show up in the free edition. Frustrating, because it is my favorite uninstaller, and then have to usr another “free” uninstaller, or as my last resort, Windows. I love the way it searches for all the left over registry remnants and files. I have subscribed to your blog for a while in Google reader. I like the fact that you seem to ignore what everyone else is re-posting and tell us the “skinny” on what is important to you. I like the name of your blog, also. Raymond.cc is catchy and to the point. Looking forward to your newest posts now that you have a Win 7 64-bit speedy machine.

      I’ve been using the free version for several years now and even thou it is slow to do the job it gets it done well. The other day I needed to remove a program on a friends computer and they did not have Revo installed, I had to actually stop and think how to remove the program using control panel, which goes to show how much I rely on it. I would be very much like to have a copy of the Professional version.

      The free version has exactly the same features as the pro except for a few internet-related ones. The reasons that you would use Advanced Unistaller — registry searching/removal of detritus, AND *tracking of registry/disk changes from an installer* — are available in the free version.

      In short, I’ve found AU Free to be *every bit* as good as Revo Pro (not free).

      Another free alternative is ZSoft Uninstaller

      Zsoft Uninstaller also has a registry/disk monitor but it is still very much a work in progress and it doesn’t work very well. BUT the registry cleaner is outstanding in this, MUCH better than either Revo OR AU (or anything else). It can be aggressive though (before it searches it gives you an editable list of items that it will search — and destroy — upon so make sure that the items aren’t too broad)

      In fact, after uninstalling using ZU, try using a registry editor to find remnants and you probably won’t find any.

      And while I’m on the subject of a registry editor, still using Regedit? For shame because Resplendent Registrar Registry editor (RR) is much better at everything.

      RRLite does everything (important) that the paid version does, except for a nag dialog when you quit (worthwhile to put up with).

      I’ve tried a lot of uninstallers, but Revo is my current personal favourite. I was never really into that computer maintenance stuff, like defragmentation and such but after randomly trying it, somehow I like it better when the computer is clean and tidy.

      P.S.: I’m often surprised just how much “junk” applications leave on your computer after running the regular uninstallation…

      I use Revo Uninstaller already for some time, I consider a must as little satisfied with the built-in operating system. The work of the REVO GROUP is really high quality, and are convinced that in the coming years this technology will be implemented in operating systems as it is the only one that actually allows you to remove an installed program.       Hi Paul, looks like you really enjoyed your holidays ;-)

      I’ve been using Revo for years now and it does a fine job. Some time ago I also installed Advanced Uninstaller and it does a good job to. Even has quite a lot of other tools that can be useful and it has one advantage over Revo, it’s way faster loading the program’s normal uninstaller but seems to be slower in analyzing leftovers.

      Anyway, I would still recommend to check carefully what both want to delete because, sometimes, they will also remove stuff that, for some reason got linked to the program you are removing. But in cleaning the registry they both are otherwise rather conservative, still leaving entries behind. I sometimes run a search in RegSanner after both uninstallers, just to find there indeed still are leftovers, even after running one RegistryCleaner or another.

      The worst offender is the trial version of Norton Security that comes installed on HP machines. Revo indeed found a few hundred leftover registry entries and got rid of them. But RegScanner found over 700 more, yes 700. And here comes the worst part: don’t try to remove those or your system will not restart afterwards anymore. It happened to me twice (been obliged to reinstall Vista from scratch in 16 months. Running fairly but a bit erratically for now with an amount of blue screens unheard of under XP (which I only used from SP1 on). And God knows I did love Peter’ Commander and utilities back in the DOS days and bought his books as well (the latest I bought dealt with XP and is still sitting in front of me…). But I loathe the way this “system security” nestles in the OS and, in fact, corrupts the Vista it comes with!

      Some keys I was sure of were deleted using RegScanner and I was able to safely remove some others by carefully searching files left over(after Revo!) and then running a couple of registry cleaners (ever noticed that they all find different “errors”, sometimes even after rerunning the same program?). I just ran a RegScanner search on Norton and Symantec, just to still find 86 and 545 occurrences respectively. Well I guess I’ll have to live with them…

      So, I’m wondering whether the Pro version would be able to do a better job (the day my Vista dies on me again, I would certainly give it a try on that Norton/Symantec beast!). Mabe tou could test it on a user machine you are servicing? Anyway, this Pro version would certainly serve my purposes!

      In my opinion,Revo Uninstaller is one of the “must have” utilities for any system.It really lives up to it’s fame.So obviously I have installed it on my laptop.The feature that impresses me most is that it is able to log the changes made during the installation of an app in realtime!!.Moreover,it’s ability to integrate this feature in the context menu of “exe” and “msi” files is the icing on the cake.On the other hand,other uninstallers use the method of creating snapshots of the system before and after the installaton and comparing the two snapshots later on to create a log of the changes made.Now this method is very cumbersome for anyone who frequently installs software.So keeping in mind the things I have said above,I would definitely like to be included in the giveaway.

      If by “subcribe to the blog,” you mean THIS blog (and not some blog on the Revo site… it’s a teenie bit unclear), then I’ve long ago done that.

      And this would be my post here…

      …so I think I’ve satisfied both conditions.

      I do want to actually comment, though that while I agree with you that it’s difficult to call the free version “just as good” as the PRO version, I hope readers will not be misled: Even the free version of Revo is amazing… a force with which to be reckoned.

      I’ve been recommending it for… well, it seems like forever; and in IT terms, it kinda’ has been. It’s a phenomenal piece of software. And all one has to do with the free version to get almost (and I stress that word… almost) the same quality of uninstalls as are possible in the PRO version is to use the fourth, most complete/deepest (and, sadly, longest) uninstall method in the free version. Believe me, it gets pretty much everything. Though, I agree that the PRO version takes it just that one step further, readers here would not be shooting themselves in the foot to be satisfied with the free version. It’s that good.

      Just my thoughts, for whatever they’re worth (and my ex-wife will happily attest that that’s usually not very much).

I have used the free version of Revo Uninstaller and, and for a short time the pro version, found it to be the perfect add on program to use in keeping my system fast and healthy. Not only does it remove the program but it will remove most if not all references to the program being removed. I had the pro version once from GAOTD, but lost it when I had to reinstall windows after a crash. I would love to have it again.

      I was interested to read Francis Vandenplas’s comments which I agree with totally. I too have used Revo (free) for a while now and have found no problems with it EXCEPT for those stated by Francis. In those instances (like Norton) e.g. removing a problem copy of Live Messenger – when I have had to resort to a manual clean follow up – I have been surprised and a little disapointed in how much was left behind by REVO – even in ‘Hunter Mode’. However, if the choice is between REVO and Windows own pathetic offering – it’s no contest – Revo every time.

      I would welcome gladly an opportunity to try the Pro version.

      Listen all, the only program I would ever recommend to ANYONE about cleaning after programs is Uninstall Tool!

      Nothing beats it – I’ve even tried removing Office by force and it worked without a single registry key left :)

      Those programs like Revo, YU Gold etc. are ugly and inefficient! Try Uninstall Tool and you will never go back to anything else!

      I never experienced any problems in using Revo Uninstaller under WindowsXP; it always worked well and always better than any other software I tested.
      Unfortunately, the free version is useless under 64-bit Windows 7; it can’t even recognize all the installed programs, never mind completely removing the uninstall detritus. If the Pro version works on 64-bit W7 like the free version worked on XP, here’s wishin’ for a chance to win.
      However, your post already has more than 450 comments, so since you only have 2 licenses to offer, how about an article on (free or cheaper) alternatives to Revo Uninstall Pro for 64-bit Windows 7? Thanks.

      Thanks for the quick review Paul, but would have liked to hear you provide a little more details of what makes it worthwhile to upgrade to Pro over Free version. In particular, does the Pro version uninstall software “better” than the Free version? I have Ashampoo Uninstaller 3 (Paid) but have not dared to use it to uninstall monitored installations after it screwed up my system the couple of times that I have used it. I believe it is because using it to uninstall older installations brings a system back to an older snapshot point and adversely affects newer applications that may be using the same files, registry entries, etc as the uninstalled program, correct me if I am wrong. Revo Uninstaller Free has worked quite well for me, but I am still wary as it has also caused problems for me a couple of times. I admit I do not know enough to discern what registry entries thrown up by Revo are safe to delete and most of the time just delete whatever leftover entries Revo throws up at the end. So what would really add value for me would be an Uninstaller that could incorporate the expertise to help the standard user with deleting registry entries safely. I was hoping to hear that Revo Uninstaller Pro would be superior to the Free version with regard to the uninstaller engine.

      I hope that you will consider me for a license to Revo Uninstaller Pro, thank you.

      Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition had been holed up in my computer for many years as uninstalling it with Add or Remove Programs failed due some missing files. Installing a newer version also was not successful as it detected the old version. Then I came to know about Revo Uninstaller, Free. I tried Revo Uninstaller and used the Advanced Uninstalled Mode to remove Norton Antivirus. Bingo!!! On restarting the computer, I don’t find Norton Antivirus in the Add or Remove Programs or in the System Tray. Please consider me for the Revo Uninstaller Pro license.

      Total Uninstall by Gavrila Martau will put any uninstaller in the shade, including Revo uninstaller. Don’t take my word for it. Check out reviews, try it out and you will see the difference.
      Unfortunately, it is not freeware, though the earliest version 2.35 is. Fortunately, you can try the latest version of the software as a trial.

Although the paid version comes withmuch more functions but the most outstanding compare to the free version is the ability to capture installation process. use little memory and runs smoothly even during the installation of huge file like open office. I have used the free version of Revo Uninstaller for a long time and have always wanted to own the Pro version! I have entered competitions to win the Pro version before and have not won so I am stoked to see this great software being given away again.         I know it’s probably too late, but, if it’s not I would love a free license to the revo-Pro. 

      Would have refistered esrlier but I ran into some problems with the Phone verification.  All fixed now (obviously!)
