This is one problem I’ve been experiencing on my laptop for a long time. I have no problems signing in to Gmail and opening any mails in Internet Explorer. However, whenever I wanted to scroll down or up, Internet Explorer will hang for a few seconds and it will also take up 99% of the CPU usage. I never really cared about it because I am a Firefox user and Firefox don’t have that problem.

I do use Internet Explorer once in a while to check my other Gmail account as I don’t want to mess up my Firefox cookies. Finally I got fed up of the problem and I tried to look for the cause of the problem. At first I thought maybe this is could be a way Google is supporting Firefox but this problem only happens in my laptop and not at desktop. That gives me an idea that this problem is not caused by Gmail but by my Internet Explorer browser.
Before fixing anything on Internet Explorer, I noticed that I am able to revert back to the old version of Gmail by clicking Older Version hyperlink at the top right after logging in. The old version is meant for people with slow computer or internet connection so you can load Gmail faster.

Using the old version of Gmail solved the problem! Do take note that changing your Gmail to old version is not a permanent setting. Every time you log in back, you’ll have to manually click the Old Version hyperlink again if you want to use the old version. Although I found a solution, I am still not convinced that this is Gmail’s compatibility problem with Internet Explorer nor my laptop is slow to handle Gmail 2.0 (My laptop has 2GB of memory). I made sure the Internet Explorer at my laptop has the latest version and also all hotfixes installed but problem still exist. I figured that it could be Internet Explorer add-ons or plugins that is causing gmail slow problem. I open up Internet Explorer, went to Tools > Manage Add-ons > Enable or Disable Add-ons… I noticed that there were a few third party add-ons installed by FlashGet, FlashFXP, OrbitDownloader and Java. I tried disabling one by one add-ons and finally found that the culprit is FlashGet.
At first I ran FlashGet and went to Tools > Options > Monitor and uncheck Internet Explorer at Browser Clicks section.

By right disabling this feature should disable FlashGet integration with Internet Explorer but IE add-on’s window still shows that the add-on is loaded and it did not fix Gmail problem. Since this solution did not fix the problem, I had to manually disable the add-ons from Internet Explorer.
Run Internet Explorer, go to Tools > Manage Add-ons > Enable or Disable Add-ons… Select the following add-on name FGCatchUrl, FlashGet, FlashGet GetFlash Class and click Disable. Click OK and restart Internet Explorer. That should fix Gmail hang in Internet Explorer problem.

I’ve just disabled and re-enabled all the addons, this seems to have helped. Its at looking at Ff’s CPU use with gmail open its at 18%, then when closing it goes back to 4%. Not perfect by any means but good enough to work for the moment.
tanks, my CPU was on fire.
It worked. really helpful. thnx.
Hello, I wasted many hours due to this issue. I use IE7. I faced this problem despite Resetting all IE setting thus disabling all add-ons. I did not find any solution over internet. I am persistent user of IE. I never used Firefox. My FlashGet Plug-in is also disabled. Exact reason is still unknown.

Thanks so much – the hanging while trying to scroll down in gnail was driving me crazy (it started doing this after i took my laptop’s USB ports to be fixed and the PC guys screwed around with all my settings!).
Really a great help -much appreciated!
That did’nt work for me but found that the problem on my laptop is the credential manager plugin .. disabled that in IE and problem gone
Very useful tip. Thanks a lot, Ray. My IE encounters same problems and now fixed by your tips.
U mnie gmail zwalnia (tak bardzo, że się nie da pracować) po zainstalowaniu iTunes. Ten efekt występuje w explorerze (wszystko jest OK jeśli otwieram gmail w innych przegladarkach).
Thanks Raymond,
I spend a lot of time looking for a solution for this problem. Thanks very much.
Hi Raymond ,
May i know what is the version of IE you use in your desktop? Because my laptop and desktop also freezed while scrolling. I use IE 7 on both desktop and laptop.
Thanks dear for defining the problem with details !
thanks !!
it’s work for me
I had no problem with Gmail when using Firefox, but Firefox wouldn’t let me open 2 or more gmail accounts as IE would. In the past I did not had any problem until I put together a new desk top, updating to IE7, and even IE8 30 minutes ago. I thought it was a fight between IE and Gmail ’cause there is no problem with IE and other webmai providers. My Gmail pages were sticky and freezed run by IE, I couldn’t even scroll!
It was lots of frustration and I searched for answers, until I got here. I have just disabled the FlashGet, and my Gmails become active again! Thanks for tipping me!
Thank u.. that fixed the problem…
hi everybody!!!
Thanks n best regards.
eid mubaraak, everybody
ur a gem buddy it works
wait,…. you use Internet Explorer just because you don’t want to break your Firefox cookies ??
you use IE ONLY for one site ?
why you just instead use PRISM [from Mozilla]
I installed it to have access to Gmail, in case whenever Fx breaks.. but after a while I use it instead Fx [It handle mailto: links very easy]
hi thanks good think
i have this problem in firefox! but i think its cause of the ram issue i only have 640 mb ram and 1.20 ghz. i honestly blame google, they don\\\’t let us keep the old version switch. have u ever used yahoo\\\’s? there new version is even worse sooooooooo slow! but at least you can go back to classic version fully. they say they optimize your email experience for the user, thats bull they optimize it for the ads!
Flashget is a resource hog and I quit using it long ago.
That’s why most of us dump IE. :D
I saw a PC with similar problem, that gmail.com was very very slow with high CPU. Clicking on email also very slow and high CPU.
The problem was McAfee BHO scripts, one of which was there twice.
Also, when you have IE7 (new in IE7) problems, the first thing to do is run it without the BHO using command \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\”iexplore -extoff\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\”, so you know if the problem is the add-ins.
I am using OE to check mail
I’ve never had such problem but I have a problem regarding processes. Don’t know what seems to be the problem but every now and then (often though) after PC restart or just starting it I get this thing:

After a min or so all those processes start working normal but it really pi$$e$ me off when I have to wait a couple of minutes for such thing.
I’d really appreciate if someone knows how to fix this stuff.
Raymond, keep up the good work. I learn new thing with every single post of yours. props for that
I’ve had a similar problem when scrolling on windows live messenger – it makes itunes skip! Any tips for that?
Hey Raymond,
Just wanted to let you know this tip helped me in Firefox 3 beta 5 on Ubuntu, too. I had thought the lag when I scrolled was a beta bug issue, but after disabling (note: I didn’t have to completely uninstall it) it fixed the problem.
Thanks!
I am experiencing a similar problem: when I visit gmail to check my mail it keeps refreshing. I used to be able to check my emails but not able to write to anyone. However, it seems like the problem has worsed on my part sine last month. I am not sure if the same solution applies to my problem but I will give it a try.
Thanks Raymond.
Ricky.
You are the best.
Thank you
