Its at looking at Ff's CPU use with gmail open its at 18%, then when closing it goes back to 4%. Not perfect by any means but good enough to work for the moment.

I’ve just disabled and re-enabled all the addons, this seems to have helped. I use IE7. I faced this problem despite Resetting all IE setting thus disabling all add-ons. I did not find any solution over internet. I am persistent user of IE. I never used Firefox. My FlashGet Plug-in is also disabled. Exact reason is still unknown.

Hello, I wasted many hours due to this issue. I use IE7.
